This week's khutbah invites us to acquaint with another famous regional and international scholar. With a strong command of languages, Hamka managed to read, analyze and research on the works done by Islamic thinkers of his time, as well as scholars from the West. With his ability to command various types of knowledge, his ideas and fresh thoughts were captured through his quality academic writings in various disciplines such as Tauhid, Philosophy, Tasawwuf, History, Tafsir, Literature, Sociology and Politics. One of the most valuable works produced by Hamka is his 'Tafsir Al-Azhar'. Hamka was a special man gifted with many talents. Hamka demonstrated how Al-Quran can provide a holistic guidance for the various challenges we face in life.

Dear blessed congregants,Let us continue in striving to increase our takwa to Allah s.w.t. Perform all that He has commanded and avoid all that He has prohibited.

Saudaraku yang dirahmati Allah, Marilah kita sentiasa pertingkatkan takwa kita kepada Allah s.w.t. Laksanakan segala suruhan-Nya dan jauhkan segala tegahan-Nya.

May our takwa and our deeds positively impact our lives,

Semoga takwa dan bakti yang mendalam itu hendaknya menghidupkan peribadi kita,

strengthen our efforts towards achieving success and attaining the pleasure of Allah in this world and in the hereafter.

Their ranks in the sight Allah s.w.t. are very special, as mentioned in surah Al-Mujaadilah verse 11:

Darjat mereka di sisi Allah s.w.t. sangat istimewa, firman Allah dalam surah Al-Mujaadilah ayat 11:

Meaning: “Allah will rise up, to (suitable) ranks (and degrees), those of you who believe

Yang bermaksud: “Supaya Allah meninggikan darjat orang-orang yang beriman di antara kamu,

and international scholar by the name of Haji Abdul Malik Bin Abdul Karim Amrullah (HAMKA),

dan juga antarabangsa, tokoh yang dimaksudkan adalah Haji Abdul Malik Bin Abdul Karim Amrullah (HAMKA),

or more affectionately known as Buya Hamka. He was born on 14th of Muharram in the year 1326 at Kampung Molek, Maninjau, West Sumatera.

atau lebih dikenali dengan panggilan mesranya Buya Hamka. Beliau dilahirkan pada 14 Muharram tahun 1326, di Kampung Molek, Maninjau, Sumatera Barat.

Hamka, or Buya Hamka, was raised in a religious family environment. When he was 10 years old,

he pursued his education in one of the madrasahs in Sumatera. In this madrasah, he began to deepen his religious studies and the Arabic language.

beliau melanjutkan pelajaran di salah sebuah madrasah di Sumatera. Di madrasah inilah beliau mula mendalami ilmu-ilmu agama dan menekuni bahasa Arab.

With this burning interest in seeking knowledge, he traveled far and wide to learn from renowned scholars of his day,

including Syekh Ibrahim Musa, Syeikh Ahmad Rasyid and many others.

One of the most valuable works produced by Hamka is his ‘Tafsir Al-Azhar.’ This work aims to accommodate the thinking of the community,

particularly the youths of this region, who are interested in reverting back to the religion but have little ability to understand the Arabic language.

It is hoped that through his interpretation of the Al-Quran, it will raise the level of faith, enhance the beauty of Islam

Dengan harapan melalui tafsirnya itu ia dapat mempertingkat iman, mewajahi keindahan Islam

and contextualized the application of Islam to the challenges and living conditions of the region.

dan mampu mengamalkan Islam sesuai dengan cabaran dan suasana kehidupan di Nusantara.

Tafsir Al-Azhar is an important piece of work that has contributed to the Islamic da’wah development in this region.

Tafsir Al-Azhar merupakan hasil penulisan penting yang telah menyumbang kepada perkembangan dakwah Islam di Nusantara.

Tafsir Al-Azhar constitutes 30 juzu’ of the Al-Quran, considered as a leading religious encyclopedia in the Malay Peninsula.

Tafsir Al-Azhar yang merangkumi 30 juzu’ Al-Quran dianggap sebagai sebuah ensiklopedia agama terulung di rumpun Melayu.

This is reflected in the approach of translating the contents of the Al-Quran based on the socio-cultural background of regional communities.

Ini dapat dilihat melalui pendekatannya yang menerangkan isi kandungan Al-Quran dengan berlatar belakangkan kehidupan sosio-budaya masyarakat Islam Nusantara.

A simple example can be found in Hamka’s translation of the first two verses of Surah Al-Fateha, where Allah s.w.t. says:

Contoh mudah keterangan ini dapat dilihat melalui tafsiran Hamka ketika menerangkan dua ayat pertama dalam Surah Al-Fatehah, yang mana Allah s.w.t. berfirman:

Meaning: “In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful. All Praises are due to Allah, Lord of all the Worlds.”

Maksudnya: “Dengan Nama Allah, Yang Maha Pemurah, Maha Penyanyang. Segala puji-pujian untuk Allah, Pemelihara semesta alam”

Hamka used relevant examples in the context of living in the Malay Archipelago.

Hamka telah membawa contoh-contoh yang dekat dalam kehidupan masyarakat Melayu Nusantara.

In explaining the meaning of God, Hamka states that the use of the word ’Tuhan’ or ’God’ in Malay is specific only to Allah s.w.t.,

Dalam menerangkan makna Tuhan, Hamka menyatakan bahawa penggunaan kalimah Tuhan di dalam bahasa Melayu adalah khusus untuk Allah s.w.t. sahaja,

whereas the word ’Tuanku’ or ’Your Majesty’, is used as a form of respect to kings or other human beings.

manakala Tuanku sebagai penghormatan kepada raja dan tuan untuk menghormati sesama manusia.

Similarly, in his conclusion when interpreting surah Al-Fatihah, Hamka explains,

Begitu juga, dalam kesimpulannya ketika menafsirkan surah Al-Fatihah, Hamka menerangkan,

“And when we pray to be saved by God, do not commit any acts that may cause Allah’s anger, and do not go astray,

“Dan setelah kita memohonkan agar diselamatkan Tuhan, jangan tertempuh jalan yang dimurkai Allah dan jangan pula jalan yang sesat,

for indirectly we have been tasked to learn history, philosophy and sociology, as well as psychology.

dengan secara tidak langsung kita sudah disuruh mempelajari ilmu sejarah, falsafah sejarah dan ilmu kemasyarakatan (sosiologi), dan juga ilmu jiwa.

We must learn the reasons as to why a nation is raised up in their station or decline in their status.”

Kita harus mempelajari bagaimana sebab-sebab sesuatu umat atau kaum naik martabatnya atau jatuh kedudukannya”

My dear brethrens,Clearly, Hamka was a special man gifted with many talents. He was also a preacher,

Saudaraku sekalian, Jelaslah, bahawa Hamka merupakan seorang pujangga istimewa yang bersifat serba boleh. Beliau juga merupakan seorang pendakwah

statesman, scholar, thinker, writer, historian, and a scientist, who at the same time was also a great orator and a prolific writer.

ilmuwan-budayawan, yang terkenal juga sebagai pemidato hebat dan pahlawan pena.

His intellectual ideas have gone beyond the boundaries of religious thoughts, he has spent his life serving and upholding the honour of the ummah in this region and culture.

Pemikiran-pemikirannya telah melepasi sempadan agama yang luas dan dalam, hayatnya telah dihabiskan berjuang bermati-matian memartabatkan ummah serumpun seagama dan serantau sebudaya.

Hence, it is appropriate that he is called as a Muslih or purifier of this region, as his struggle brought renewal and purification in Islamic da’wah.

Maka layaklah beliau diiktiraf sebagai seorang Muslih yakni pemurni di nusantara ini, yang jelas perjuangannya membawa kepada pembaharuan dan pemurnian dakwah Islam.

His efforts were honoured at a regional and international level.

Jerih payah usaha beliau telah diberi penghargaan di peringkat serantau dan antarabangsa.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Al-Azhar University and the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in the years 1958 and 1974 respectively.

Beliau dinobatkan anugerah doktor kehormat oleh Universiti Al-Azhar serta Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) pada tahun 1958 dan 1974.

Dear blessed brethrens,Hamka’s understanding on tafsir such as Al-Fatihah demonstrated how the Al-Quran

Saudaraku yang dirahmati Allah,Pemahaman HAMKA terhadap tafsir surah seringkas Al-Fatihah, menunjukkan bagaimana Al-Quran

can provide a holistic guidance for the various challenges we face in life.

mampu memberikan panduan yang menyeluruh untuk kita berhadapan dengan cabaran kehidupan yang mencabar serta pelbagai.

This is where we find the importance of interpreting the teachings of the Al-Quran, as well as the connection between the words of Allah with our lives.

Di sinilah peri pentingnya untuk kita bukan hanya membaca terjemahan Al-Quran, tetapi juga untuk kita memikirkan apakah kaitan ayat-ayat ilahi dengan kehidupan kita.

We should reflect on the intents of Allah when we recite these verses repeatedly in our prayers, such as surah Al-Fatihah.

Perlu kita fikirkan, apakah yang ingin Allah sampaikan kepada kita melalui ayat-ayat yang sering kita ulangi pada setiap hari seperti surah Al-Fatihah?

The legacy of intellectual thought left behind by past scholars needs to be revived again. In fact, thinking is part of ibadah.

Warisan berfikir yang ditinggalkan oleh ulama kita terdahulu perlu sekali dihidupkan kembali. Malah berfikir juga merupakan antara perkara dalam ibadah.

With the power of thinking, there will be many useful knowledge and discoveries that can be explored.

Dengan kekuatan berfikir, banyak sekali pengetahuan dan penemuan bermanfaat dapat diteroka.

Remember, a community who is constantly in a state of remembrance of Allah is a community who is always thinking.

Ingatlah bahawa umat yang selalu berzikir mengingati Allah, adalah umat yang tidak terpisah daripada berfikir.

This is mentioned in Surah Ali ‘Imran verse 191:

Sepertimana yang disebutkan di dalam Surah Ali ‘Imran ayat 191:

Meaning: “Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides,

Ertinya: “Orang-orang yang menyebut dan mengingati Allah semasa mereka berdiri dan duduk dan semasa mereka berbaring mengiring,

and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the prayer):

dan mereka pula memikirkan tentang kejadian langit dan bumi (sambil berkata):

"Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire. ”

‘Wahai Tuhan kami! Tidaklah Engkau menjadikan benda-benda ini dengan sia-sia, Maha Suci Engkau, maka peliharalah kami dari azab neraka.’ ”

Let us strive to emulate the personal examples of such leading personalities in Islam whom we have examined throughout this month.

Marilah kita berusaha mencontohi sifat peribadi-peribadi ulung yang telah kita dalami sepanjang bulan ini.

Let them be shining examples for us from their persistence and perseverance in the pursuit of knowledge,

Baik dari sudut kegigihan dan ketekunan dalam menuntut ilmu,

up to their strength and struggle in spreading Islamic knowledge for the betterment of the ummah.

sehinggalah kepada kekuatan semangat dalam menyebarkan dan memperjuangkan ilmu Islam bagi kemajuan ummah.

May Allah bless their souls. We pray that Allah will give us the strength of faith, knowledge and deeds befitting our status as ‘Khaira Ummah’. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat ke atas roh mereka. Mudah-mudahan, Allah memberikan kita kekuatan iman, ilmu dan amal dalam memartabatkan ‘Khaira Ummah’. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.
