Benijófar, que cuenta con una extensión de 4,4 km2, es un municipio situado en el sur de la provincia de Alicante, en el interior de la Comarca de la Vega Baja del Segura, que limita al norte con Formentera del Segura -de la que se halla separada por el río Segura- y al sur, este y oeste con Rojales. Dista, además, 9 km. del mar Mediterráneo.El origen topónimo de Benijófar procede del árabe Beni Ya’far, un nombre de tribu que signi%ca “hijos de Ya´far” (“hijos de la perla”). Sus inicios se remontan a una antigua alquería islámica, desconociéndose la fecha exacta de su fundación.Benijófar cuenta con una población de 4.204 personas. De la población benijofera, conocemos que el 61,6% de sus habitantes no han nacido en España y proceden sobre todo de países de habla inglesa.

ES Benijófar es una localidad que tradicionalmente se ha dedicado a la agricultura, tanto de huerta como de secano -el 100% de su super%cie está afectada por la cuenca hidrográ%ca del Segura-. Aunque actualmente, muy poca gente vive exclusivamente de ella. Muchas familias poseen una pequeña parcela de huerta de la que extraen naranjas, limones, patatas, alcachofas o habas, casi para uso exclusivo y orientan su vida laboral hacia los servicios, el turismo y la construcción. Benijófar cuenta con importantes recursos naturales, como la Huerta o la vereda del Río Segura, y artísticos, como importantes retablos del Siglo XVIII y una Noria del Siglo XVII. Además, se han establecido rutas turísticas y posee el que está llamado a ser un gran pulmón verde de la Vega Baja –el Parque Cañada Marsá-.

Benijófar has an expanse of 4.4 square kilometres, located to the South of the Province of Alicante, in the region of the “Vega Baja del Segura”, it borders with the towns of Formentera del Segura – separated north by the river Segura- and South, East and West with Rojales. It is 9 km from the Mediterranean Sea.

The name Benijófar comes from the Arabic Beni Ya’far, a name from a tribe that means “Sons of Ya’far” (Sons of the pearl). Its origins date back to Islamic times, its exact date of foundation unknown.

Benijófar has a population of 4.204 people. We know that a 61.6 per cent of the population were not born in Spain and mainly come from English speaking countries.

EN Benijófar traditionally is dedicated to agriculture, whether orchards or dry lands – the river Segura affects a 100 percent of its surface-, although at present very few people live exclusively from it. A lot of families own small plots of land where they grow oranges, lemons, potatoes, artichokes or beans for their own use whilst mainly working in services, such as tourism and construction.

Benijófar has many natural resources such as the orchard or the river path, and artistic resources, such as the altarpieces from the XVIII century and a water wheel from the XVII century. It also has various touristic routes and the park Cañada Marsa, the green lung of the Vega Baja.

Benijófar está enclavada en el sur de la provincia de Alicante, en la comarca de la Vega Baja del río Segura y regada por este. A unos 9 kilómetros del Mar Mediterráneo. En su tramo %nal, el río Segura riega la huerta de Benijófar, en una franja de unos 400 metros de ancho, en su margen derecho. Zona de alto interés agrícola de 85,18 Ha, tierra rica y actualmente dedicada al cultivo de cítricos (naranjos, mandarinos y limoneros), hortalizas (alcachofa, brócoli, patata, etc.). Desde los árabes, la agricultura ha sido su actividad económica.Las parcelas están constituidas en porciones o divisiones. Las primeras son las tahúllas con 1.185 metros cuadrados. Enmedio, la de Arriba y la Pollera, todos ellos alimentados desde el río Segura a través de una noria que extrae agua del mismo.La red de aguas sobrantes está formada por la Landrona o Ladrona, como avenador principal y una red de numerosos avenadores secundarios que vierten las aguas de drenaje a la Landrona, también azarbes o azarbetas y de ahí al río.El río Segura es la fuente de alimentación de la huerta y de sus especies cultivadas que se re*ejan en su paisaje maravilloso y digno de admirar, junto a toda la red de riego de acequias, norias, azarbes y canales.En Benijófar se puede ver claramente desde la Noria, de la que nacen las cuatro acequias madres, a través de acueductos subalternos (hilas o hijuelas) riegan la huerta.

The village of Benijófar is located to the south of the Province of Alicante, in the region of the “Vega Baja del Segura”, on the right hand side of the river bed, about 9 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. This river, towards its mouth, feeds Benijófar’s orchards, roughly a strip of 400 metres in width. It is of agricultural interest with rich soil dedicated to citrus fruit (oranges, mandarins and lemons), vegetables (potatoes, broccoli, artichokes) etc.Since Arab time agriculture has been the main economic activity of the area.The orchards are made up of portions or divisions, %rstly being plots of 1.185 metres called “Tahullas” and the water is distributed to these plots via the waterwheel that elevates the water to four main channel systems called “Acequias”, and

named: “Moral”, “Enmedio”, “Arriba” and “Pollera”. Any excess water or drainage from the land is then channelled via the “Landronas or Ladronas”, also called “azarbes y azarbetas”, and many secondary channels that *ow into these, and then returns to the river.It is a marvellous countryside to admire, the river feeding the orchards via all its different channels and water wheel. From the Water wheel one can see where the four main channels start and the further channels called “hilas or hijuelas” that irrigate the orchards.

Se encuentra situada en un meandro a las afueras del núcleo urbano, en la margen derecha del río Segura, formando parte del conjunto hidráulico en el que también se incluye el Molino Harinero de Formentera del Segura y el Azud. Construida con muros de sillería a mediados del s. XVII (1659) constituye el símbolo de nuestra huerta y de la localidad.

The Water Wheel is located in a meander on the outskirts of the town, on the right hand side of the river Segura. It is part of a hydraulic system which includes the mill on the other side of the river belonging to the town Formentera del Segura. It’s built on stone walls dated from the XVII (1659) century, it is a symbol of our orchards and locality.

It was replaced for an iron wheel in the XIX century, and has been recently restored. The diameter of its wheel is 7’70 metres and it collects the water from the river, delivering 80 litres per second, at maximum

La ruta ‘Pasear por Benijófar’, que ha sido homologada como sendero local SL-CV 135, cuenta con unos 4,5 km (3 km el abreviado) que se recorren en menos de hora y media. Se inicia en la Plaza de la Constitución y su recorrido sigue por el Camino de los Rafaeles hasta llegar al parque de ocio y recreo El Secano. Discurriendo junto al río y dejando los cultivos a la izquierda se llega a la Noria para $nalizar el recorrido con la llegada al núcleo urbano por el Camino Viejo de Orihuela.El paseo es muy cómodo ya que prácticamente no tiene desnivel y cuenta con un gran atractivo ya que transita entre el río Segura y la huerta de Benijófar, pasando además junto a la noria del siglo XVII. El sendero está señalizado, tal y como indica la normativa, mediante balizas, postes indicativos y señales pintadas

Además cuenta con un trabajo interpretativo mediante diferentes paneles que informan de las características del sendero y recrean los diferentes ambientes y paisajes que podemos observar durante el recorrido.El río Segura es un elemento fundamental en toda la comarca de la Vega Baja, ya que durante siglos ha modelado, no solo el paisaje que bañan sus aguas sino también el modo de vida de los pueblos que se encuentran a su paso, convirtiéndose en fuente de alimentación de la huerta y por tanto en la base de la economía y cultura de la población.Este río, con una cuenca de 18.651 Km2 y 325 Km de longitud, riega en su tramo $nal las tierras de cultivo de Benijófar. creando un ecosistema /uvial muy rico en biodiversidad.

The route “Walk Benijofar”, which has been of$cially recognised as local walk SL-CV 135, is about 4.5km (3 km if taking the short cut) long and can be done in less than an hour and a half. It starts at the square “Plaza de la Constitución” and follows the road towards the recreational park “El Secano”. Following along the river path with the orchards on our left we arrive at the Water Wheel, then continuing along till latching on to the road “Camino Viejo de Orihuela” which brings us back to town centre. It is an easy walk as it is practically /at with lovely views of the passing orchards, the river and the water wheel from the XVII century. The walk is signposted as by norm with green and white markings that identify this type of walk. Various panels along the way inform of the type of walk, environment and landscape that can be seen.

ES The river Segura is fundamental in the region of the Vega Baja, as for centuries it has modelled the landscape fed by its waters and also the economy and culture of the villages it passes.This river, with a basin of 18.651 square kilometres and 325 kilometres in length, towards its mouth irrigates the orchards of Benijófar, creating a /uvial ecosystem rich in biodiversity. It is not dif$cult to observe in the rivers vegetation various aquatic birds, amphibious species, reptiles, insects and $sh.

En el Parque de ‘El Secano’ se puede practicar, además, senderismo, fútbol, bicicleta y paseos por el río.En este paraje también se puede visitar el santuario dedicado a Nuestra Señora Estrella del Río.

Para llegar hasta este parque desde el municipio hay que partir de la plaza de la Constitución, por el Camino de los Rafaeles.

This natural spot is located in a meander on the bank of the river Segura as it passes through Benijófar. It has been turned into an environmental recreational park with a sports and leisure area. It is surrounded by indigenous trees and plants and

there are tables, benches and barbecues to enjoy a day out in the countryside.

In the park, called “El Secano”, apart from trekking, one can play football and cycle and walk along the river path.In this spot you can also visit the sanctuary dedicated to “Nuestra Señora Estrella del Río”. To get to this park from the centre of town,

there is a road “Camino Rafaeles” that leads from the square “Plaza de la Constitución” towards the river.

A pesar del terremoto citado, aún se conserva en el interior altares como el de la Dolorosa o el Sagrado Corazón, ambos de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII, otros de estilo Barroco, como una custodia de cristal, plata y plata sobredorada y seis retablos,

además de elementos de ornamentación.El edi#cio consta de tres naves con crucero y torre. Sus patrones son Santiago Apóstol y la Inmaculada Concepción. En la actualidad destacan la fachada y el pórtico de entrada.

The church of Apostle Santiago is the most representati-ve building of the municipality and considered a fundamental piece of our history and culture. It is of recent construction, although it had a lovely temple originating from the end of the XVI century

Even after the earthquake it conserves in its interior altars such as the “Dolorosa” and “Sagrado Corazón” both from the 2nd half of the XVII century, beginning of the XVIII century and other items of baroque style, including glass, silver, adornments and another six side

altars. The building has three aisles with a cross section and a tower. The patron Saints are the Apostles “Santiago” and “Inmaculada Concepción”. At present the façade and entrance outstand.

ES zona de ejercicios y un teatro al aire libre. ‘Cañada Marsá’, cuyas obras se están acometiendo por fases, es un lugar respetuoso con el medio ambiente donde se fomentan las zonas verdes y las energías limpias, como la solar, que servirán para dar servicio a la zona de ocio del parque.

En estos momentos, el Parque cuenta con dos fases ya construidas, que suponen 45.000m2, que son las de la zona del Embarcadero, con un gran lago, y las correspondientes a la zona sur y oeste donde se ha reforestando el espacio con plantas autóctonas y se han

creado zonas de huerta. Además, se puede disfrutar de mesas, bancos y barbacoas en la parte norte.

At present, two phases of the park have been built, 45.000 square metres, the pier and the lake, and garden areas to the south and west of the park with indigenous plants and orchard areas. There are also tables, benches and barbecues to the north of the Park.

La Plaza de la Constitución es una plaza remodelada sobre la antigua, de arquitectura moderna con amplios espacios y líneas funcionales y minimalistas. La fuente nos hace recordar el vínculo del pueblo con el agua.

The “Plaza de la Constitución” is a square reformed on top of the old one, of modern architecture with open and minimalist space. The fountain reminds us of the bond between our town and water.

El Parque 3 de Abril además de ser un lugar de juegos infantiles y de descanso para los mayores, tiene una característica especial ya que es ‘biosaludable’. En la zona central del parque se han instalado 7 aparatos que permiten al usuario mejorar su movilidad, la recuperación de lesiones, artrosis u otras enfermedades relacionadas. Así, todas las personas que lo deseen pueden utilizar los siguientes aparatos: Pedales, Zig-zag , Paso de obstáculos, Espaldera, Manivelas rotativas, Asas rotativas y Flexos extensores.Está situado junto a la Casa de Cultura y el Colegio público y además del espacio ‘biosaludable’ incluye una zona de arbolado, con su pérgola, zona de juegos infantiles, mobiliario urbano y zona de petanca.

The park “3 de Abril” apart from being an area for children to play and of leisure for our elderly, is also bio healthy. In the central area of the park there are 7 apparatus to improve mobility, recuperation from injuries, arthritis and other related illnesses, such as pedals, Zig-Zag, obstacle course, back exercise, rotation handles and others. It is located next to the Cultural Centre and public school, and also includes trees, children’s games, shaded area, benches and an area for bowling.

EN The square “Plaza de las Verbenas” located next to the cultural centre, where for many years the popular (estas have been celebrated, with its traditional “patatada”, an act where residents of Benijófar get together to have a supper of potatoes together.

La Plaza de las Verbenas, situada junto a la casa de cultura, es la plaza donde mucho tiempo se ha venido celebrando las (estas populares con su tradicional “patatá”, acto típico de las (estas de San Jaime en las que los ciudadanos se reúnen para cenar en la plaza patatas.

The park “Joaquin Sánchez Garcia” has gardens and a play area for children. Due to its size it is an ideal park for long walks and at its highest point it’s like a genuine balcony overlooking the natural space that the park Cañada Marsá offers.

El Parque Joaquín Sánchez García es un parque con jardines y zona de ocio infantil. Por su extensión constituye un parque idóneo para disfrutar de largos paseos y en su tramo más alto, genuino balcón, deleitarse del escenario natural que ofrece la Cañada Marsá.

La tradición culinaria de Benijófar es de amplia variedad, destacando algunos platos típicos como el cocido con pelotas o el arroz con conejo y serranas. Para diario el arroz claro de vigilia, cucurrones u olla viuda. En repostería destacar las toñas, “mantecaos”, rollicos de agrio, buñuelos de calabaza o “ almendraos”. En la Candelaria los canutes, en Pascua las monas y los relentes en navidad.

Benijófar’s traditional cooking is varied, with typical dishes such as meat ball stew, or rice with rabbit and snails. For daily cooking there is a light rice “arroz claro de vigilia”, Vegetable stew with wheat “Cucurrones” or chickpea and vegetable stew “Olla Viuda”. For pastry or sweets we have “Toñas”, “Buñuelos”, “Mantecaos”, “Rollicos de agrio” or “Almendraos”. At Easter we have “Canutes” and “Mona”, and at Christmas “Relentes”.

Benijófar celebra sus %estas en honor a sus dos patrones, San Jaime y Ntra. Sra. La Inmaculada. El 25 de julio sale el Santo en procesión, días atrás comienzan con la coronación de reinas, seguida de verbenas, des%les, ofrenda (oral, la carrera de cintas, la jornada gastronómica…En las %estas de la Inmaculada, el 8 de diciembre, se realizan actos actuaciones culturales y la procesión.

Benijófar celebrates its %estas in honour of two patron saints, “San Jaime” and “The Immaculate Conception”. On the 25th of July our Saint is taken out in procession, previous to this act will have been the election of Queens, dancing, parades, (ower offerings, gastronomy day……We celebrate the 8th of December with processions and cultural events.

EN The %estas at Easter start on Palms Sunday with the blessing of the palms; the Silence Procession and the procession to celebrate the Risen Christ’s meeting with the Virgin Mary takes place on Easter Sunday. The %estas end with a celebration to Sainte Vicente Ferrer and the “Entierro del Boqueron” (burial of the anchovy) to welcome the arrival of Spring.Christmas time is for children, with the parade of the Three Kings, and also a workshop on how to make traditional Christmas puddings.

Las %estas de Semana Santa comienzan con la bendición de palmas el Domingo de Ramos. Otros actos destacables son la Procesión del Silencio y el Encuentro de la Virgen y el Cristo el Domingo de Resurrección. Finalizan con el día de San Vicente Ferrer y el Entierro del Boquerón, donde se despide el luto y se da la bienvenida a la primavera.En navidad los protagonista son los niños y el acto más destacable es la Cabalgata de Reyes. También se realizan talleres de elaboración de dulces navideños.
