Questions 26 31are based on the following passage.

Azizul was just a young boy living in a small town. He looked up to his older brother, Amirul. He thought that his brother was the smartest and coolest boy in town.

He had heard so much about his adventures with his friends. He felt green with envy wheneverhe saw his brother going out with his friends. Many times, he had wished that he could be one of them.

After all, he was already eleven, only a year or two younger than the boys who were hanging out withAmirul.

So one day, when Amirul and his friends asked him to go with them to their hideout under the

bridge at the edge of the town, he was very excited. He thought it was going to be the best day of hislife he was finally going to be part of the cool gang in town.

However, while they were on the way there, Amirul and his friends kept talking about Project

    X. Azizul felt odd but he was afraid of being branded as stupid. So, he did not ask them what ProjectX was. Besides, he did not want Amirul to send him home. He had waited for this chance for such a

    long time.

When they reached the bridge, Amiruls friend, Rosli, asked him to keep watch while they

squatted under the bridge. Then, Rosli took out a pack of cigarettes while another friend brought out a

lighter. Soon, they all began to smoke.

Azizul stood rooted to the ground, too stunned to move. His brother, the boy his parents were

so proud of and whom he had looked up to, was puffing away. This was the very thing their parents

had warned them about. In fact, their father had given them a whole lecture on the dangers of smokingjust last night. Amirul had sat there so innocently and promised their father that he would not smoke.

Azizul felt so disgusted with his brother. Suddenly, he felt betrayed.

Finally, one of the boys came over to Azizuls post and gave him a cigarette. He just held itwith his shaking hands. I dont think . I dont want to do this .. he murmured. As soon as he

said that, everyone looked at him and started laughing at him. You are such a baby! Everyonelaughed.

Determined to prove them wrong, Azizul lit the cigarette and began to smoke. It was reallyawful. He kept coughing and could hardly breathe. The taste was so awful but he kept on puffing.

Amirul came over and took it away from him. Azizul could not look into his brothers eyes. He was

afraid Amirul would be able to read his fears and disgust.

Just then, someone yelled: Hey, look! There was a small fire on the right side of the bridge.

Someone had not stubbed out his cigarette properly and it had started a small fire in a patch of grass.

Amirul and his friends sauntered over slowly, thinking that it was just a small fire. They had a

competition to see who could trample out the flames first.

They shoved and pushed each other as they stamped on each others feet, giggling andlaughing. But the fire grew bigger and started spreading quickly to the other side. Panicking, they took

off their shirts and tried to beat out the fire. The boys threw their drinking water on the fire, but to no

avail. The fire became uncontrollable and soon, it spread quickly.

When the boys realised that they had caused a major disaster, they ran helter-skelter. Amirul

grabbed Azizul and ran all the way home. He asked Azizul to swear that he would never tell their

parents. Azizul was terrified and hoped that someone had seen the flames and called the fire brigade.

At dinner, the boys were strangely quiet. Their father told them that there was a fire near thebridge. He blamed it on the dry weather. Fortunately, someone had spotted the fire and the fire was putout before it reached the houses. After dinner, Amirul offered to wash the dishes, something he rarely

did. Azizul escaped into sanctuary of his room and heaved a sign of relief. Their parents did not

suspect anything but to this day, the brothers have never had another cigarette in their lives because ofwhat happened that day.

    1119/2 SULIT14

The night of the ball arrived. Madame Loisel was a great success.

She was prettier than any other woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling

and filled with joy. All the men looked at her, asked her name, sought tobe introduced. All the attaches of the Cabinet wished to waltz with her.

She was remarked by the minister himself.

She danced with rapture, with passion, intoxicated by pleasure,

forgetting all the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, in a

sort of cloud of happiness composed of all this homage and admiration

and of that sense of triumph which is so sweet to a womans heart.

She left the ball about four oclock in the morning. Her husband

had been sleeping since midnight in a little deserted anteroom with threeother gentlemen whose wives were enjoying the ball.
