1.0 COMPANY BACKGROUND

)he history of Econsave #egan with a wooden sundry shop in Port +lang more

than 63 years ago. )hrough years of hard work and perseverance, while constantly

adapting to the changes in the retail scene, Econsave has emerged as one of the

largest grocery retailers in "alaysia. In the home state of Selangor, Econsave has the

largest and most e7tensive network of #ranches in all the main towns in Selangor,

unmatched #y any other supermarket or hypermarket operators. 8oing hand in hand

with Econsave means that the products will potentially reach the four million

consumers in Selangor, one of the most affluent segments of the "alaysian

population. In addition, Econsave has a strong presence nationwide and is constantly

looking for new opportunities throughout "alaysia.

!or SIEP 2, I chose Econsave %ash & %arry 'aiman aya which is located at

my hometown, +ota )inggi, ohor. Econsave currently operates a chain of 

hypermarkets in "alaysia. )hey are one of the top three retailers in "alaysia. 9ith

the slogan ::0andingkan arga +ami:: ;%ompare <ur Prices=, they strive to offer the

cheapest prices in town at all times. )his is achieved through a no>frill operation, #ulk>

#uying in cash and direct imports, spearheaded #y Econsave?s directors, to ensure

that the lowest prices are offered. )he practice of ::Every 'ay @ow Price (E'@P:: has

also attracted increasingly more loyal customers to Econsave.

)hey achieve their vision and mission #y dedicated professionals, with a

strong integrity and a high level of professionalism, emphasises e7cellence and a

dynamic decision making process. )his ena#les Econsave to continue growing, in

leaps and #ounds, despite numerous economic recessions and the entry of foreign

hypermarkets into the retail market scene in "alaysia. All Econsave?s directors are

actively involved in the daily operations of the company, to ensure that our goals are

on track and are always in focus.

2.0 PRODUCTS AND SERVICE OFFERED

Econsave %ash & %arry 'aiman aya is a supermarket that selling groceries

and daily necessities. Econsave have a few departments such as fresh department

that provided fresh and fro-en products, canned food department such as cooking oil,

sundry department such as detergents and nonfood department such as electric

euipments. )hese four departments consist of a department head, supervisor and

staff. !resh department is the #iggest department and consist of the largest num#er of 

staffs #ecause there are many types of products in this department. !resh products

such as fish and meats checked first #y supervisor #efore received #y the store clerk.

 After finished the receiving process, the products will immediately #rought to the

department to keep them fresh. !or fro-en food such as ice cream, yogurts and

nuggets, the store clerk need to check the e7pired date.

Same goes to the canned food department, the store clerk needs to check

e7pired date that should #e at least three months #efore the due. If less than three

months e7pired date, the company will re$ect the goods ordered. %anned food

included $unkfoods, snacks, instant food, #everages and rice. )here are many

companies that supplied canned food due to the compeitition #etween #rands either 

imported or local #rand. Econsave also produced their own #rand for several types of 

canned food such as dairy milk. All of Econsave #rand products are made at very

afforda#le prices. Econsave products are manufactured with careful precision to cater 

to the various market segments. Econsave products are made with the consumer 

interest in mind. 9ith careful study of the needs of consumers, Econsave a#le to

produce a #rand and product that will serve the purpose of the every shopper that

spends in the store. Switching to Econsave products can help customers save due to

the low cost products.

 Apart from that, Econsave also offered sundry product sold #y "alaysia?s

#rand. Econsave had created their own product including dish soap and liuid, #a#y

diapers and clothes softener. Sundry product including econsave #rand, econsave

choice #rand and econsave value #rand. <ther sundry products such facial foam,

perfume and cosmetics. onfood product also offered #y Econsave such as electric

product, clothes and groceries. All the product offered almost similar with other 

hypermarket in "laysia such as )esco and "ydin. opefully, Econsave also can #e

successful like the other #ig companies in "alaysia soon.

3.0 MARKETING STRATEGY

 As a retail company in "alaysia, Econsave had implemented several

marketing planning to #oost for sales and o#taining #igger market share. )herefore,

Students In Enterprise Programme (SIEP will e7amine the marketing mi7

approached #y Econsave to successfully market the products and formulate

marketing strategy. )herefore, Econsave can moves towards #ecoming a market

leader. As usual, this BPs marketing strategy is the successful key to Econsave.

Econsave has a wide range of product line such as food line, soft line, hard>

line and household items. 'ue to the wide range of product, Econsave will #enefits

from larger customer #ase. )his will give positive advantage to Econsave as its

customer can o#tain all products needed here at lower and cheaper price. As a local

player, Econsave provide items that are complement with its customers need.

"a$ority of "alaysian are "uslims. )herefore, Econsave provide local prayer mats,

prayer garment for women and traditional product which are rarely found elsewhere.

owever, Econsave should consider its non>"uslim customers due to the image of 

the place where only "uslim shops.

Cariations in the #usiness scenario can create needs for new products and

services at the cost of esta#lished provision. !ollowing changing in demands of 

Econsave clients, it is possi#le to launch new types of products. Although most of the

products availa#le in "alaysia come from local suppliers, products such as diapers

and wet wipes are imported from 8ermany and +orea and are all of international

uality and standards, yet set at e7tremely afforda#le price points and are easily

accessi#le for "alysian consumers.

Econsave has a multi>channel approach so that people can shop how they

want to. Econsave has different shops format to suit customers needs. Some like to

drive to a #igger store, others like to shop for their fresh food on their local high street

and some find it easier to shop online and order their shopping straight to their door.

Econsave preserve their customer #y #uilt their supermarket at the residential area at

every district. Econsave has more than 43 outlets in "alaysia including Sa#ah and

Econsave should provide the fair trade products at lower rate in comparison to

its competitors. It is essential to provide the products at value added price, so as to

lure the attention of the customers. Price always #een an important element of the

marketing mi7 #ut in retailing the importance is even more significant considering that

on average the margin are around the 1D of the net sales. In the light of this, price is

fundamentally linked to the concept of promotion and competitiors are freuently

surrounded #y an environment of price wars as it is e7emplified.

 Although aggressive promotions can #e the conseuence of price conscious

customers as a result of a financial crisis it is also a dangerous startegy if Econsave

want to preserve the core purpose of the company. It is difficult to earn lifetime loyalty

#reaking promises as Econsave did when failed to #eat others competitors and had to

refund money to customers.

Econsave promotion strategy is consistent with its overall #usiness startegy of 

cost advantage. Econsave?s marketing o#$ectives are profit ma7imi-ation in short>

term and long>term perspectives and increasing the value of the #rand image. )his

o#$ective is achieved through media advertisements, sponsorship of events and

charita#le causes, point of sales marketing strategies, regular announcement of 

promotional offer and discounts.

)he term promotion encompasses all the various ways Econsave can

communicate with customers and includes advertising, pu#lic relations and pu#licity

(P/, sales promotion, direct mail, the internet and direct communication as well as

sponsorship. )ogether all of these communication tools are referred to as the

promotional mi7. )he top manager of Econsave %ash & %arry 'aiman aya, "r. "as

always make promotion #y sponsoring the poor some daily necessities. Econsave will

"oreover, there are always had promotion almost every weeks #y spreading the

flyers to customers. )his ways is the effective ways to attract customers.

4.0 SWOT ANALYSIS

)he main strength of Econsave is its strong #rand name and its valued

customer service. )he company is far less integrated than the other #ig company that

which makes them more fle7i#le compared to others. Econsave also had competitive

prices strategy that focused price cuts made it possi#le for it to draw in far more

consumers via competitiors along with catch the volume that #acked the #ottom

prices. As we know, Econsave has large #usiness structure #y operating not only in

main city #ut at almost every district and having more than 43 outlet in "alaysia.

Eventhough Econsave has many outlets in "alaysia, the transportation cost

increasing #y years #ecause the distance #etween outlets are far. Econsave has their 

our lorries called lorries that sent Econsave products. )he lorries need to travel to

each outlets everyday to sent their products so if there is any new outlets opened, the

transportation cost will increase too. Increasing geographical spread maks focus onspecific markets difficult to adapt. Econsave company also lack in online #usiness.

)hey can compete more if they make online #usiness in the future.

Econsave can carry out a high customers due to the large parking provided.

)he parking area had almost the same si-e with the Econsave #uilding. <pportunities

in "alaysia provide e7cellent possi#ilities for growth. Econsave can plan for strategic

alliance with other famous companies. !urthermore, many chances of opening new

outlet at Sa#ah and Sarawak #ecause the region only have one outlet for each. I also

#elieve that Econsave has high potential to enter Asian market and make it

international company that can #e known in Asia.

companies such as 8iant, )esco and "ydin. 'ue to the economics decline,

fluctuation in ta7es may impact the Econsave financials and give #ad effects to this

company. Econsave needs more attention in innovation and technology #ecause

many of other #ig companies more advanced than Econsave. Econsave also may

face the rising in material cost due to the economics downturn happened in "alaysia.

5.0 EXPOSURE DURING TRAINING

I assigned as store clerk when I $oined this company. At first I noticed that as a

store clerk, I need to work faster #ecause there were many things to do. )his work

scope including store clerk, products? sender and E'P department. )hese three

parties need to cooperate diligently to make sure that the process is going smoothly.

 As a store clerk, I needed to deal with the supplier?s driver that sent their product. As I

was new#ie, my senior workers taught me all a#out receiving the items. I did mistake

and my department head corrected me. As a store clerk, the first thing I did after 

received ta7 invoices from the driver was searching the purchase order in the files

arranged #y departments then separate the documents into two places. )here are

driver?s document that neede to give #ack to the suppliers as proved that Econsave

had received items sent. )he other part was the company?s that needed to #e

checked and evaluated #y the store clerk.

"y department head taught me to scan the purchase order?s #arcode then

went to the products that loaded at loading #ay #y supplier?s. Store clerk must scan

the #arcode of items included in the ta7 invoices that the purchase order scanned $ust

now. )he wrong items cannot #e scanned. After scanned the #arcode, I need to count

the uantity they sent. If products sent lesser than ta7 invoices, we will assign it as

shortage and will give them a credit note for refund. If the uantity more than it should

#e, we will immediately asked them to take #ack the products. )his way will avoid

miscalculation product?s uantity during stock record for every three months. !or fresh

product such as fish, vegeta#les and meat, supervisor from fresh department will

come and checked the uality of the products to make sure the uality of each

product is the #est.

 After done checking and record the receiving report, I need to print it and sent

to E'P department to #e matched with company?s data system. )hey need to match

the uantity ordered, the price put #y the suppliers and the total price of overall ta7

invoices. I learnt a#out E'P staffs? work during covering them on the leave. I learnt on

how to match them and what action took if the uantity and price were not matched. It

was very different from what store clerk works eventhough store clerk and E'P are in

same department. )here are many things I learnt during the training and the

knowledge is precious to me. I will not forget what they taught me #ecause I will use it

in the future.

6.0 SKILL NEEDED IN MANAGING COMPANY

)here are #asic rules for #usiness success that haven not gone away with the

digital age and they have only #ecome more important. )he skills listed #elow could

have appeared from any #usinessmen?s mind. )he main skill needed is

%ommunication skills. "anagement is still tight with #udgets, and needs to #e sold on

new pro$ect ideas. )he a#ility to construct an argument and make the pro#lem

forcefully and clearly to my department head, suppliers or items? sender will move

ideas to fruition. %omputer systems can provide all the information needed, #ut

machines do not know how to package it up to get decision>makers e7cited a#out

lending support to a pro$ect or idea. <ther than that, time management and

organi-ation also an important skill to have. )he a#ility to stay organi-ed and prioriti-e

tasks will go a long way to moving the team forward. An application may accomplish a

task within a millisecond, #ut it does not know its conte7t or how it fits into the scheme

of things. ust as important, to #e a#le to make a decision and act on an

opportunity now   without getting wrapped up #y paralysis #y analysis will deliver 

results.

 As a manager or department head, the goal must #e set first. o #usiness

operation will get anywhere without a vision of the end result. It is this vision that

focuses and solidifies all activities teams are undertaking after the goal planned, the

company must delegate the tasks to the staffs. o matter how talented and

educated, one individual cannot do everything that needs to #e done to keep an

organi-ation on track toward its goals. )he a#ility to surround staffs with talented

people who can augment the skills will get things done every time without fail./elationship #uilding is important to avoid misunderstanding #etween staffs and top

management. othing helps lay the groundwork for advancement more than

cultivating and maintaining good relationships. Social media and email may help

make it easier to keep in touch, #ut the key is to keep those contacts going.

 As a store clerk, passion and determination needed to face the unpredicta#le

suppliers? manner. "otivation has to come from within the drive to e7cellence is

entirely an internal affair. )otally out of reach of any I) system. 'ue to the programme

I took at university, entrepreneurial and innovation skills also important during

managing #usiness. Even in the techiest of places, it takes a sense of imagination to

conceive new ways to create value. ew ideas are not generated #y machines, they

come from the minds of the people using those machines. As I was training, I must

have high desire to learn. othing #eats the value of education, whether it:s formal

college degrees or completion of training skills in my profession. Even seeking out

coworkers on the $o# for opinions and e7periences means the growth of knowledge.

0ecause this was only training for students like me, I need fle7i#ility and adapta#ility

to #e more efficient. 0e open to new ideas, environments, and responsi#ilities.

.0 ACTIVITIES DURING TRAINING

5.1 !I/S) 9EE+

!or my first day, they show me the euipments that we use while recording the

received goods. Econsave using ) scanner to scan products? #arcode then it will

save the record and we can directly print the receiving report form the ) scanner.

0efore starting scanning the #arcode, store clerk need to scan the #arcode of the

purchase order made #y the E'P department. If the purchase order scanned then we

can detected the product order was the right product or not. If the product is not

ordered, the ) scanner cannot verified the #arcode so store clerk need to return

the goods. After knowing the euipment used, I learnt to separate ta7 invoices,

purchases order and delivery order gave #y the suppliers.

I also went to E'P department to learn how to print stock card #y suppliers?

vendor num#er in data provided in the Econsave system. "erchandiser from any

vendor can made order from stock card printed.

!or the second day, I still practicing separate the ta7 invoices, delivery order 

from suppliers and the purchase order made #y the merchandiser. )hese documents

separated #y the company?s copies and the suppliers? copies held #y the lorries?

drivers. Every invoices has different purchase order. After done seperating these

documents, I can strat recording the goods received #y ) scanner following the ta7

invoices. )he products recorded #y the t scanner must #e same as the ta7

invoices given. If suppliers gave us wrong items then company will return it and

declare a credit note to the suppliers.

)he credit note must #e signed #y the driver?s to verified that they sent the

wrong items or the items was not delivered so Econsave can claim the payment #ack

for undeliver items.

 As usual, I worked #y using the ) scanner machine #ut that day I misused

it #y recording the wrong items. Suppliers only sent the items in the ta7 invoices

#ased on company?s order from the purchase order form. 0ut there is possi#ilities that

suppliers do not sent all the items ordered from the purchase order form due to out of 

stock. I scanned items for wrong ta7 invoices and saved it in the company?s data

record. So my head deartment need to called Econsave?s manager to delete the

wrong data. I should #e careful in the future.

 After given warning #y manager and department head, my department head

decided to monitor my works.at first, he watched me worked #ecause when he was

not the one who taught me, the senior worker did it. !inally, he personally taught me

all the receiving thing from the start until finished in the right way. e told me that

sometimes workers took short>cut ways to finish faster. I learnt the most important

value today and very happy to have a responsi#le department head. )here were

diferences #etween the ways of teaching from #oth senior workers and the

dpeartment head. I hope I can do #etter in the future.

I was starting the new day with parcticing the things that learnt a day #efore.Even I was slow #ut I was sure that the I done the right thing. I was hoping for no flaw

that day.

I learnt new things after the receiving process. I need to print out the receiving

process and sent the documents to E'P department to further process. E'P

department is one department #ut the way of working different from the store clerk.

E'P department will match the ta7 invoices sent and the receiving report printed.

!rom this process, the staffs will know either the documents were matched or not.

I practiced as usual #y receiving and recording the sent items #y suppliers. 0ut

today I learnt to continue the process after sent the documents to E'P department.

E'P staffs will match the documents sent and they will give #ack to store clerk to #e

signed from the sender of the following items. If the document are not match with

Econsave?s data system either low cost or over cost, E'P staffs will print out credit

note to #e signed #y the item?s sender. )his signature is very important to #e

evidence that approving the items are having pro#lems. )his is the ending process of 

receiving items from the suppliers. )hese documents will #e sent to the financial

officer to #e checked for the second time. If there were any mistakes the store clerk

who responsi#le to the invoices will #e called and need to e7plain the pro#lems. So all

the store clerk need to put their name in every document checked #y themselves.

I came to work as usual and due to the lack of staffs the department head

asked me to learn how E'P staffs work. As usual, he personally taught me. E'P

department is a#out company?s data recorded from the ordering and receiving

products. After store clerk done receiving the items, E'P staffs need to match the

uantity and price offered to the company. If the supplier price higher than the price

offered to the customer, Econsave will recorded it as overcost. Same goes if the items

sent is wrong then Econsave will print out credit note to the supplier and asking for 

refund.

)he day was very hard for for covering two task in a day. I hope I will #e more

professional in the future.

I keep learning in E'P department due to the lack of staffs. I had to cover #oth

departments. I started my day with received items from suppliers as usual. )hen after 

lunch I will cover for E'P department. )his is #ecause during morning there were less

store clerk. At 1.3 pm, the noon shift workers will come and I had covered for the

E'P department. )his company usually had $o# rotation every month. Store clerk will

rotate will E'P staffs so they can work for #oth department. )his ways can improve

the uality of workers.

9orking in E'P department was really different. As a store clerk, staffs were

facing sender of the items ordered and the items? uantity and uality. 0ut in E'P

department, staffs we facing with data and systm. If the data was not match there

were action took.

I was working as store clerk #ecause all of the E'P?s staffs were #acked to

work and I was relieved. 0ut today I needed to learn how to receive 8>value items

usually sent them in large uantity and the purchase order made after the items sent.

)his process tool a long time due to the large uantity and the purchase order that not

settled yet. 'uring the purchase order is in the making, store clerk can record the

receiving #y wrote down the #arcode and the uantity for each items. )hen, key in the

record #y using the ) scanner after the purchase order was done. )his process

went same with items sent #y the eaduaters #ut the different was the type of 

products sent. )he usually sent fresh products such as fruits and vegeta#les. So

items must #e checked on the time it arrived #ecause to maintain the uality, the

products must #e kept at free-er.

)he knowledge I learnt was very valua#le and I will practice them in the

future.

It was my last day of learning so I worked as usual #ut it was the day my

department head will evaluate me a#out my working uality and gave feed#ack #y

using the form given #y my university. I uite nervous #ut I needed to prove that I am

the #est student that the company ever hired. 0efore I left, they made a small farewell

party to me #etween our department?s mem#er. I am very happy having my training in

this company.

!.0 CONTRIBUTION TO COMPANY

0y using the ) scanner machine, I scanned the purchase order first then

went to the followed items sent to scan their #arcode. As I scanned the #arcode, I

needed to calculate the uantity they sent. After done scanning products, I saved the

record and print it out then attached it with the company?s ta7 invoices and purchase

order. After that, the documents needed to send to E'P department to match the

record and if there were any pro#lem e7ist, the store clerk on duty will #e responsi#le

for the mistake. )hen, the documents will #e given #ack to driver to #e signed as

proved. !inally, I gave their documents #ack.

In a nutshell, I had contri#uted my time as I needed to cover staffs that went

recess at lunch and dinner. 'ue to the lack of staffs, I did part time almost everyday.

)here were three shifts for staffs which were morning shift, noon shift and full shift.

*sually, morning shift staffs will cover the noon shift staffs during dinner #reak. )he

loading #ay cannot #e empty to avoid theft. %overing hours were a#out one or hours.

9hen the company hired me to #e a store clerk, I contri#uted my energy and efficient

skill to accelerate the receiving process. I helped this company recording and

handling the receiving process #etter than #efore #ecause Econsave has lack of 

staffs. )he staffs usually not permenantly worked there. )hey only part timer that

spending their free time #y working there. So I helped Econsave #y covering the

vacancy.

I also #e more patience during training process after #eing scolded due to the

misused of ) scanner. )he suppliers also complained that the way of we were

working were too slow. Actually,store clerk $ust record, save and print the data. )hen

the data sent to E'P department to #e matched. )he process uite slow due to the

hundreds of ta7 invoices needed to #e matched #y them in the same time. I hope my

contri#ution #eneficial to the company and they happy with my contri#ution.

than 63 years ago. Econsave was founded in 1G66, from the #oard in the grocery

store, originally transformed itself into one of the nation?s largest grocery retailer, stick

to the principle of decades, the meager profit #ut high turnover, cheap and fine.

)hrough years of hard work and perseverance, while constantly adapting to the

changes in the retail scene, Econsave has emerged as one of the largest grocery

retailers in "alaysia. 8oing hand in hand with Econsave means that the products will

potentially reach the four million consumers in Selangor, one of the most affluent

segments of the "alaysian population. opefully Econsave will stimulate the market

a#solutely, giving another wonderful place for shopping in the city. Econsave has

implemented huge e7pansion and organic growth of its company. )hey try to gain

their market share #y #ecoming more competitive toward its rival. In #ecoming so, a

transformation throughout the organi-ation is done.

0ased on the marketing planning carried out, Econsave is currently on the

right direction towards its corporate o#$ectives. 9e can notice how Econsave develop

strategic marketing mi7 to successfully market their product. owever, there is some

areas that should #e improved and focus on. In terms of product, Econsave can try to

attract non>"uslim customers #y having a promotion or creating an image of 

Econsave as a place for anyone. 0esides that Econsave has wide channel of 

distri#ution. owever, Econsave should also consider dealing with diseconomies of 

scales. <ne of the choices is #y introducing measures to remove productive

inefficiencies. Econsave might count the effectiveness of each of the #usiness format.

)he marketing strategies indicate that Econsave can gain higher market share from

its competitive advantage in promotion and price. )hey manage to give clear 

perception of the #usiness to pu#lic.

ence, they can gain more customers in the future. In operation management

and human resources, Econsave try to centrali-e their management to hinder 

#usiness runs at loss and to generate efficiencies. <verall, #ased on the analysis of

10.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

)here are some recommendations that I want to Econsave improve in the

future. )he recommendations are

• Improves the communication skills #etween staffs and customers.

Even #etween staffs also have miscommunicate during sending

information among departments. Sometimes, there is

misunderstanding #etween store clerk and items? sender #ecause lack

of communication skills.

• Even Econsave is well known in "alaysia #ut the cost reduction

strategy must #e proved to #e a valid approach to productivity

improvement especially raw materials cost. Econsave used low price

to attract customer so it will #e #etter if the cut the cost to get more

profit.

I hope the management can set the work scheduling #etter #ecauseduring my training, they department head will approve any staff that

apply for leave. e $ust approved whom asked for leave without

checking who will cover the task for them. I need to cover for E'P

department even I am store clerk #ecause lack of staffs. )his situation

may lead to low productivity.
