As seen at the end of Part I -- DATA, TROI, WORF, andGIUSTI in their places. The ship is ROCKED SLIGHTLY bythe blast from the Mercenary ship.

WORFDirect hit to the port nacelle...(beat, then surprised)But -- only minimal damage.

Another SHAKE.

WORF(continuing)Hit on the starboard nacelle...again, no appreciable damage.

TROIWil must've done something totheir weapons.

DATAI believe so, Counselor. It isnow up to us to... play along.(to Giusti)Release inertial dampers and cutpower on decks thirty-one throughthirty-seven.(to Worf)Set phasers to twenty-fivepercent. Return fire.

WORFAye, sir.

BARAN(to Picard)Continue firing!

PICARD(off console)We've lost three plasma relays onthe disruptors. Auxiliarypower... is not available.

BARAN(exasperated)Transfer weapons control to mystation. There's a way to by-passthe relays and feed power --

The ship is ROCKED again.

NARIKThe anti-matter containment unitis starting to buckle!

Tallera moves quickly and smoothly to Baran.

TALLERA(urgent, quiet)The Enterprise has been badlydamaged but they still havesuperior firepower. If we remainhere, we will be destroyed. Thelogical course of action is towithdraw.

Baran doesn't want to go, but another SHAKE convinceshim. Baran's next words are intended for publicconsumption.

BARAN(loudly)We've done enough damage. Narik, set course one eight zero, marktwo one five. Warp six.Initiate.

Narik works the console. Across the Bridge, Riker andPicard exchange a slightly relieved look.

WORF(urgent)Sir. We will not be able to trackthem with our sensors if they goto warp. I can still disable thembefore they --

DATAI am aware of the tacticalsituation, Lieutenant. Let themgo.

Worf glares at the image of the Mercenary ship on theViewscreen as it begins to move away from theEnterprise.

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

(NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.)

6 EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL)

The ship hangs in space.

7 INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

Worf at Tactical, Troi and GEORDI at the aft sciencestations, Giusti at Ops. Data moves from station tostation, and people automatically report to him as heapproaches.

GIUSTI(off console)Sensor sweep eight has beencompleted, sir. Still no sign ofthe mercenary ship.

DATAUnderstood. Begin sensor sweepnine using the lateral array setto maximum gain.

GIUSTIAye, sir.

Data makes his way to the aft stations.

8 INCLUDE TROI (OPTICAL)

On the monitor in front of Troi is a video replay ofRiker's last Viewscreen transmission from Part I. TroiFREEZES the image as Data approaches.

TROII've gone over every word, everyinflection, every facialresponse... but I still haven'tfound any kind of code or hiddenmessage.

DATAUnderstood. I agree that theprobability that such a messageexists is remote, but I believe weshould check.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 5.

8 CONTINUED:

TROII'll keep trying.

She returns to the console and Data turns to Worf.

WORF(to Data)Two starships have been sent tointercept the mercenaries atYadalla Prime and Draken Four, incase they attempt to attack thoseplanets.

DATAVery well. Inform StarfleetCommand that we will hold positionhere until further notice.

WORFSo we are just going to... remainhere?

DATAYes. But we will continue topursue all avenues ofinvestigation which are availableto us.

WORFIf we had not allowed them toescape, this would not benecessary.

Data thinks about this for a beat.

DATAThat is correct. However, Ibelieve Commander Riker wanted usto let them escape.

Suddenly Geordi sees something on his monitor.

GEORDI(excited)I think I've got something.

Data moves to Geordi's console. On the monitor is anOKUDAGRAM of an intricate series of numbers and letters --clearly some kind of code.

GEORDI(continuing)I've been studying the com linkCommander Riker used to transmithis command codes.(MORE)

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 6.

8 CONTINUED: (2)

GEORDI (Cont'd)I didn't see anything at first, but when I ran the transmissionthrough a sub-harmonic analysis Ifound this.(indicates graphic)It was sent on the same carrierwave as the command codes.

Data and Troi look at the monitor.

TROI(to Data)It might be the message you'vebeen looking for.

Data sits down at the console and begins to rapidlywork the controls.

DATAPossibly. I will attempt to resequencethe signal.(to Geordi)Begin running a search for adecryption key.

As Data and Geordi work...

CUT TO:

9 EXT. SPACE - THE MERCENARY SHIP (OPTICAL)

The ship comes to a STOP near a large planet.

10 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - BRIDGE

Baran in command. Picard, Riker, Tallera, Vekor, andNarik at their stations.

NARIK(off console)I'm taking the engines off-line.

BARANHow long until we can repair ourbattle damage?

NARIKIt will take at least five hoursto replace the anti-mattercontainment unit.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 7.

10 CONTINUED:

BARANYou have three hours, Narik. Oneminute beyond that and you'llanswer for it with your life.

Narik glares at Baran, but has little choice except tonod and EXIT the Bridge. Baran turns his attention toRiker, who seems lost in thought near one of theconsoles. Picard is standing nearby.

BARAN(to Riker)I suppose I should thank you.None of us would be alive if itweren't for you.

But Riker doesn't seem to appreciate Baran's thanks. His tone is bitter and downcast.

RIKER(bitter)You're welcome.

Picard moves smoothly in and begins to mercilesslytorment Riker. In the b.g. Tallera watches theirinterchange with a thoughtful expression.

PICARDWhat's wrong, Commander? Startingto have second thoughts aboutbetraying your comrades... becausethat's what you've done --betrayed them... betrayed them inorder to save yourself.(beat)You were just a second-rateofficer before... now you're acoward and a traitor. How doesthat feel?

Riker gives him a cool look... then, without warning,Riker HITS Picard squarely in the jaw, knocking him offhis feet.

RIKERI don't know. How did that feel?

Picard's eyes flash and he gets up and moves towardRiker.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/16/93 - ACT ONE 8.

10 CONTINUED: (2)

BARAN(hard)That's enough.(to Picard)Galen, get down to the cargo holdand check those artifacts.(beat)Move.

Picard and Riker continue to glare at each other, thenPicard seems to back down and he EXITS.

11 TALLERA

Looks from Baran to Riker... thinks for a few beats, then EXITS.

CUT TO:

12 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - CARGO BAY

Picard is checking over a group of NEW ARTIFACTS (a fewpieces of exotic pottery, ancient weapons, tools, etc.)on the scanner pad. Picard makes a note on a PADD andtakes a relic off the scanner. He begins to examineanother relic. The doors OPEN and Tallera ENTERS.Picard doesn't look up.

PICARD(irritated)Tell Baran I'm working as fast asI can.

Tallera just studies him without responding... she'sgetting suspicious. Picard turns and looks at her.

PICARD(continuing)What?

TALLERAI'm trying to decide if you'reincredibly stupid... or incrediblysmart. Why didn't you continue tofire on the Enterprise when theirshields dropped?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/16/93 - ACT ONE 9.

12 CONTINUED:

Picard turns back to his work, and as they talk, hecontinues to make complex adjustments to the strangeequipment -- sometimes hooking up new devices, discarding others, etc.

PICARDYou were there. The disruptorslost power.(to computer)Computer, reset diagnostic for newsample and begin scan.

TALLERAI've watched you handle the weaponsystems before. You know exactlyhow to by-pass a problem likethat.(beat)And why do you continue to arguewith Riker? It should be obviousthat by alienating him you arealso alienating Baran, and yet youcontinue to do it. Why?

COMPUTER VOICEScan complete. Terikon profilenegative.

Picard removes the artifact and replaces it withanother one -- this ARTIFACT has several intricatedesigns on the side and is shaped like a large puzzlepiece. Picard is deliberately taking a challengingattitude in order to maintain his cover and throwTallera off.

PICARD(sarcastic)I'm touched by your concern for mywell-being.

TALLERAThat's not an answer.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 10.

12 CONTINUED: (2)

PICARDComputer, reset diagnostic andbegin scan.(to Tallera)I'm not a prisoner in a Romulanlabor camp, Tallera. I don't haveto answer your questions and Idon't give a damn what you think.

Tallera studies his face for a moment.

COMPUTER VOICEScan complete. Terikon profilepositive. Ninety-eight percentprobability of match.

They both turn and look at the artifact on the scannerpad.

PICARDWell, whatever it is... it lookslike we've found it.

Tallera moves to the artifact and looks at it closelyfor a long beat, her expression becomes cool andunreadable.

TALLERA(touches com device)Tallera to Captain.

BARAN'S COM VOICEYes?

TALLERAI'm in the cargo hold. Galen'smade a positive Terikon match onone of the artifacts.

BARAN'S COM VOICEIs he sure?

TALLERAHe's sure.

13 INT. BARAN'S QUARTERS - CONTINUOUS

In contrast to the other quarters on the mercenaryship, Baran's quarters border on the luxurious...overstuffed furniture, gaudy sculpture -- verydecadent. Baran is lounging in a chair while Rikersits on a couch... Baran holds a drink.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 11.

13 CONTINUED:

BARAN(excited, to com)Good. Bring it here immediatelyand don't let anyone else get nearit.

TALLERA'S COM VOICEUnderstood. Tallera out.

Baran takes a long, very satisfying drink from hisglass and settles back into his chair.

RIKERI take it that's good news.

BARANVery. It means we've completedhalf of what promises to be a veryprofitable mission... and evenbetter than that it means, I'malmost ready to get rid of yourfriend Galen.

RIKERReally?

BARAN(nods)We have only one more artifact tofind... and once Galen confirmsit's genuine, his usefulness onthis ship will come to a verysudden end.

RIKERI can't say I'm sorry to hearthat.

Baran studies Riker closely for a moment... he's notquite sure what to make of him... he might have an allyhere, but Baran is wary and suspicious by his verynature.

BARANI'm sure.(beat)Galen may be a loud-mouthed fool, but sometimes he can be veryperceptive... his observationsabout you for instance.

RIKEROh?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 12.

13 CONTINUED: (2)

BARANAfter what you did at Calder Two,I doubt you have much of a futurein Starfleet.

RIKERI've... pretty much come to thesame conclusion.

BARANAssuming for the moment that youwere no longer my prisoner... whatwould you do now?

Riker thinks about this for a moment... then givesBaran a very direct look.

RIKERI guess I'd have to look for a newcareer... there must be a placewhere someone with fifteen yearsof Starfleet technical knowledgewould be useful.(beat)Do you know of any place likethat?

Baran takes a drink... he's not going to rush intoanything.

BARANPossibly.(beat)But if there's one thing I'velearned on this ship, it's to becautious... and not to blindlyembrace what seems to be goodfortune. And at the moment, youseem like a rather large stroke ofluck.

RIKERI haven't exactly sworn my undyingallegiance to you, Baran. Infact, I'd like to know a littlebit more about the job.

BARANSuch as?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 12A.

13 CONTINUED: (3)

RIKERSuch as what you meant by a "veryprofitable mission."

BARAN(smiles)I thought you Starfleet typesweren't interested in things likeprofit.

RIKERI'm not exactly... the "ideal"Starfleet type.

BARANNo, I guess you're not.(beat)All you need to know for now isthat your share could be more thanenough to insure a very long andvery wealthy life far away fromthe Federation.

RIKERSounds promising.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT ONE 13.

13 CONTINUED: (4)

BARANIt is. But if you want thatshare, you'll have to earn it.(beat)And you can start by putting asideyour dislike for Galen and tryingto become his friend.

Riker reacts as if this is a particularly unpleasantrequest.

RIKERWhy?

BARANGalen has allies among the crew...they might cause a problem if Ikill him. I want you to get closeto him and find out who they are.

RIKEROkay.

Riker stands to go, but Baran stops him.

BARANOne more thing, Riker.(beat)When the time comes, I want you tokill Galen.

A beat and then Riker nods... OFF his expression...

FADE OUT.

END OF ACT ONE

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 14.

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

14 INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

Data is sitting at the aft science station as Worf andGeordi look on. Giusti at Ops. The monitor screenshows an OKUDAGRAM image of a sequence of numbers andletters which have been arranged into some kind ofpattern.

DATAI have completed the analysis ofthe signal from the mercenaryship. I believe these groupingsrepresent bearings and coordinatestaken from their navigationalsystem.

GEORDISo you think this is their flightplan...

DATAYes. If I am correct, themercenary vessel is heading towardthese coordinates in...(works)... the Hyralan Sector.

WORFTheir maximum speed is warp eightpoint seven... it will take themat least fourteen hours to reachthat position.

GEORDIWe could be there in five.

Data turns to Worf.

DATAMake it so.

WORF(annoyed)Finally.

Data reacts to the tone of irritation in Worf's voice, but says nothing as Worf tends to the business at hand.

WORF(continuing, to Con Officer)Set course for the Hyralan Sectorand engage at warp nine.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 15.

14 CONTINUED:

Data moves quietly to Worf.

DATALieutenant, may I see you in theReady Room?

WORFOf course.

Data and Worf EXIT.

15 INT. READY ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Data and Worf ENTER. Once the doors close, Data turnsaround and confronts Worf without preamble.

DATALieutenant, I am dissatisfied withyour performance as acting firstofficer.

WORF(surprised)May I... ask in what way?

DATAYou continually question my ordersin front of the crew. I do notthink this is appropriatebehavior.

WORFSir... with all due respect, Ihave always felt free to voice myopinions... even when theydiffered from those of CaptainPicard or Commander Riker.

DATAThat is true. But in thosesituations, you were acting ashead of security, not as FirstOfficer. The primary role of thesecond in command is to carry outthe decisions of the Captain... inthis case, me.

WORFBut is it not my duty to offeryou... alternatives?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 16.

15 CONTINUED:

DATAYes. But once I have made adecision, it is your job to carryit out regardless of how you maypersonally feel. Any furtherobjections should be given to mein private, not in front of thecrew.(beat)I do not recall Commander Rikerever publicly showing irritationwith his Captain as you did amoment ago.

WORF(abashed)No, sir.

DATAIf you feel that you are notcapable of carrying out this role,I can assign it to Commander LaForge and return you to Tactical.I would not enter it as areprimand on your record... simplyas a transfer.

WORFI would... prefer to remain at mycurrent post.

DATAThen I will expect you to conformto the guidelines I have laid out.

WORFAye, sir.

Worf turns to go, then Data stops him.

DATAMister Worf... I am sorry if Ihave ended our friendship.

Worf looks at him for a moment... suddenly feeling asense of remorse at his behavior.

WORFSir... it is I who has jeopardizedour friendship, not you. If youwill... overlook this incident, Iwould like to continue to considermyself your friend.

DATAI would like that as well.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 17.

15 CONTINUED: (2)

WORFThank you, sir.

Worf EXITS.

CUT TO:

16 EXT. MERCENARY SHIP (OPTICAL)

The ship hangs in space.

17 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - BRIDGE

Baran and Riker are standing over Narik, who is workingat his engineering console. Vekor is working at aconsole in the b.g.

BARAN(with an edge)Your time is almost up, Narik. Ineed warp power.

NARIK(working)You can't rush this, Baran... ifthe constrictor coil isn'tperfectly aligned, the entire antimattercontainment unit couldrupture... and that would be theend of the engines, the ship, andus.

BARAN(brusque)I don't have time for yourexcuses. We have a schedule tokeep.(to Riker)Can you do this any faster?

Riker notes that Baran's hand has dropped to hiscontrol device... a word from Riker and Narik is dead.Narik realizes this as well and he gives Riker aworried look. Riker looks over the console, seems toconsider this.

RIKERI think Narik may be right thistime... a constrictor coil willonly align so fast. We'll have towait.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 18.

17 CONTINUED:

BARANHow long?

Riker studies the console for a moment.

RIKERI'd say another hour, maybe less.

Baran turns to Narik, a cold and unforgiving look onhis face.

BARANOne hour.

Narik returns to work with a renewed spirit of vigor asBaran and Riker move away from him. Baran movescasually to Vekor.

BARAN(to Vekor)Where is Galen?

VEKORIn his quarters.

Baran gives Riker a meaningful look as he speaks, butkeeps his ovice casual.

BARANTypical. Everyone else is workingand he's asleep. Someone shouldgo kick him out of bed.

Riker gives a slight nod... he understands what Baranwants of him.

RIKERI'll take care of it.

BARANGood.

Riker EXITS.

CUT TO:

18 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - PICARD'S QUARTERS

A small, cramped room with only the barest ofaccommodations. Picard is looking over a PADD when thedoor suddenly OPENS. Picard whirls instinctively andwhips out a phaser. Riker freezes in the open doorwayfor a moment, then Picard motions him inside.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/10/93 - ACT TWO 19.

18 CONTINUED:

RIKER(wry)It's good to see you, too.

PICARDI've had a few... unpleasantsurprises.(puts the phaser away)This isn't a good idea, Wil.Baran may get suspicious.

RIKERAs a matter of fact, Baran's theone who sent me here.(off his look)He told me to "wake you up," buthe really wants me to "pretend" toget friendly with you and thenhelp you organize a mutiny... sohe can find your supporters amongthe crew and eliminate them.(beat)So here I am... pretending to likeyou after all.

Picard can't help but smile a little at the irony of itall.

PICARDWheels within wheels... I'mstarting to forget which side I'mon.(beat)All right... what have you foundout so far?

RIKERWhen we get to the Hyralan Sector,we're supposed to rendezvous witha Klingon transport ship. I'm notsure, but I think they might bedelivering another Romulanartifact to us.

PICARD(puzzled)A second artifact... ?(beat)By the way, these artifacts aren'tRomulan... they're Vulcan.

RIKERVulcan?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 20.

18 CONTINUED: (2)

Picard hands the PADD he was studying to Riker.

PICARDI've been looking over the glyphsand pictograms I found on theCalder Two artifact. There's notenough data to translate theinscription, but the alphabet andsymbology are more consistent withearly Vulcan artifacts thanRomulan.

RIKERDo these artifacts have some kindof religious or culturalsignificance... something thatwould make them valuable enough tokill for?

PICARDI don't know.(frustrated)If I could just get access to theEnterprise computer for even a fewmoments...

Picard takes a few steps in the cramped room, trying tothink. A long beat, then he starts to think in adifferent direction.

PICARDWhat will Baran do once we obtainthe second artifact?

RIKERYou're supposed to confirm it'sauthentic...(beat)... and then I'm supposed to killyou and take your place.

They exchange a look.

PICARD(dry)You always seem to be after myjob.

Riker smiles at the joke, then Picard gets seriousagain. He touches the device on the side of his neck.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/16/93 - ACT TWO 21.

18 CONTINUED: (3)

PICARDOnce Baran decides I've outlivedmy usefulness... he can simplykill me with the neural servo.(beat)I think... we'd better startplanning a mutiny.

Off Picard's expression...

CUT TO:

19 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - CARGO HOLD

Picard is talking to Narik, who has taken one of thepanels off the wall and is working on some complexcircuitry within using a device. Mid-conversation.

PICARDWe need a new captain... so I'vecome to one inescapableconclusion...

NARIKI agree.(beat)But I don't think that's you.

PICARDOh?

Narik closes up the panel and stands up to face Picard.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/06/93 - ACT TWO 22.

19 CONTINUED:

NARIKI don't trust you, Galen... and Idon't think the rest of the crewdoes either. They're not going tofollow you.

PICARDAnd who do you think they'llfollow... you?

NARIKNo. But they will followTallera... and so will I.

Narik brushes past him and EXITS. Picard waits for abeat, frustrated that his first effort was so clearlyshot down... then he heads for the door. But before hereaches it, the door OPENS and Tallera ENTERS and sheblocks his way. The door CLOSES behind her. She looksat him coolly.

TALLERAWho are you?

PICARDWhat?

TALLERAYou're no smuggler... and I don'tthink your name's Galen.

He tries to brush past her, but Tallera raises a phaserand points it directly at him.

TALLERAYou will tell me who you reallyare and what you are doing on thisship... or I will kill you righthere.

Off Picard's expression...

FADE OUT.

END OF ACT TWO

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/09/93 - ACT THREE 23.

ACT THREE

FADE IN:

20 INT. MERCENARY SHIP - CARGO HOLD - CONTINUOUS

As before.

PICARDI don't know what you're talkingabout.

TALLERAI will not play games with you.I found the message you sent tothe Enterprise. When Riker usedhis command codes to drop theirshields, you sent a transmissionto them on the same carrier wave.(beat)You're a Starfleet officer.

As Picard starts to protest --

TALLERADo not bother to deny it. It isthe only... logical conclusion.

She holds his gaze for another beat, then lowers thephaser and holsters it.

TALLERA(continuing)My name is actually T'Paal... I ama member of the V'Shar.

PICARD(shocked)Vulcan Security?

TALLERAThat is correct. I infiltratedthis ship a year ago posing as aRomulan mercenary. I am here toinvestigate a possible threat toVulcan.

PICARDWhat sort of threat?

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/16/93 - ACT THREE 24.

20 CONTINUED:

TALLERAFirst things first, Galen. Whoare you?

Picard thinks for a moment, then decides to take theplunge.

PICARD(continuing)I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard of theEnterprise.

Tallera nods... this confirms her thinking.

TALLERAVery well. To answer yourquestion, for several years, therehas been a small, but growingmovement of extreme isolationistson Vulcan... a group that believescontact with alien races has"polluted" our culture... and isdestroying Vulcan purity.(beat)This group advocates the totalisolation of Vulcan from the restof the galaxy and the eradicationof all alien influences from ourplanet.

PICARDIt sounds like a very... illogicalphilosophy.

TALLERAAgreed. But extremists often havea logic all their own.

PICARDWhat are these artifacts we'recollecting? I know they're Vulcanin origin...

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - REV. 08/16/93 - ACT THREE 25.

20 CONTINUED: (2)

Tallera looks away and her voice drops a little... thisis a disturbing subject for her and it's not easy totalk about... there is even an element of shame in it.

TALLERAI am sure you are familiar withthe ancient history of mypeople... before we foundlogic... before we found peace.

PICARDYou were much like my people oncewere... a warlike, savage race...

TALLERAThere was even a time when we usedour telepathic abilities as aweapon... a time when we learnedto kill with a thought.

That triggers something in Picard's memory.

PICARDThe Stone of Gol... ?

Tallera looks at him, mildly surprised.

TALLERAYou know of it?

PICARDI know the story from Vulcanmythology. According to thelegend whoever possessed the stoneneeded only to think of throwingit at someone... and that personwould be killed.

TALLERAThe Stone of Gol is real, butthere is nothing magical orsupernatural about it.(MORE)

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT THREE 26.

20 CONTINUED: (3)

TALLERA (Cont'd)(beat)It is a psionic resonator... adevice which focuses and amplifiestelepathic energy. It is one ofthe most devastating weapons everconceived.

PICARDAs I recall the legend, the Stoneof Gol was destroyed by the godswhen the Vulcan people found theway to peace...

TALLERAThe resonator was believed to havebeen destroyed during the Time ofthe Awakening. Only one piece wasknown to have survived and it wasplaced in a Vulcan museum underheavy guard.(beat)Six months ago, that piece wasstolen from the museum. Soonafter, mercenary ships beganraiding archaeological sitesacross the quadrant. We believethat a member of the isolationistmovement is trying to reassemblethe resonator.

Picard is disturbed by the implications.

PICARDA telepathic weapon...

TALLERAA Vulcan trained in the mentaldisciplines would be a formidableassassin. The entire Vulcancouncil could be killed with asingle thought, and there would beno defense.(beat)My orders are to find that would-beassassin and stop him.

34C INSERT - ON BASE PIECE

The bottom of the base has TWO large SYMBOLS -- one anintricate series of circles and lines, the other a moreabstract drawing of heroic Vulcan figure. There is alarge NOTCH missing from the base at the point wherethe third piece is supposed to fit into it. PART of ajagged LINE borders the area of the missing piece --it's incomplete, suggesting yet another symbol on theother piece.

Tallera looks it over for a moment.

TALLERAFascinating. But I am not anarchaeological expert.

PICARDHmmmm. I'm anxious to see thefinal artifact... it may providea new insight into Vulcanmythology.

Picard continues to look at the pieces. Tallera bringsthem back to the business at hand.

TALLERAAgreed.(re: Picard)Bring him as well. We can use himas a hostage if Starfleetarrives... if not we'll kill himon the surface.

Picard has little choice in the matter as Narik nodsand roughly shoves him toward the pad.

37 INT. VULCAN CAVERN (OPTICAL)

This used to be a hideaway for Vulcan soldiers over twothousand years ago -- think of the catacombs whereChristians used to hide from the Romans. The cavernitself is dark and gloomy, and there are remnants ofdecaying Vulcan artifacts lying around... some crackedand peeling glyphs on the walls... a very old and dustyplace. A crude stone altar dominates the room. Infront of the altar is a modern storage CONTAINER.

Tallera, Vekor, Narik, and Picard MATERIALIZE next tothe altar and look around. Tallera indicates thestorage container.

TALLERAThere. Your reward as promised.

Vekor heads for the storage container while Narikguards Picard. Tallera moves to the altar and picks upthe third piece of the resonator and begins to link itto the other two.

37A ON PICARD

as he reacts to something with puzzlement...

37B POV PICARD - CLOSE ON THIRD PIECE

The underside of the third piece has a unique Vulcansymbol on it. As Tallera assembles the resonator, thissymbol falls neatly into place with the other twosymbols we have seen earlier.

37C RESUME SCENE

as Vekor OPENS the storage container and examines thebars of gold-pressed latinum within.

NARIKIs it all there?

VEKORNo. This is less than half ofwhat we were promised.(to Tallera)Where is the rest of it?

Tallera never takes her eyes off the resonator -- it'sfully assembled now.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT FIVE 51A.

37C CONTINUED:

TALLERAThat is all I could manage. Isuggest you take it and leave.

Narik stands and points his phaser directly at Tallera.

NARIKI did not come this far to becheated. I want it all. Now.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT FIVE 52.

37C CONTINUED: (2)

Tallera turns to him and a DISSONANT CHORD can be heardin the room... it quickly increases in volume and thereis a sense of growing power in the room.

TALLERAVery well. You will get what youdeserve.

38 ON NARIK (OPTICAL)

As a DISTORTION suddenly appears in the air in front ofhim... he gives it a puzzled look for a moment, andthen a LOUD CRACKLE of energy BLOWS him backwardsacross the cavern as if by an unseen hand... he fallsto the floor, dead.

39 VEKOR (OPTICAL)

Reacts to Narik's death and points her phaser atTallera, but she's too late -- the DISTORTION appearsin front of her and then Vekor is also killed.

40 WIDER

As Picard faces Tallera alone in the silent cavern. His eyes automatically drop to one of the phasers lyingnearby on the ground -- but it will do him little goodin these circumstances.

TALLERAGo ahead, Captain. Pick up thephaser. See what good it will do.

PICARDYou can't win, Tallera. Starfleetwon't stand by while you tearapart one of the founding worldsof the Federation.

TALLERAHow little you understand what youare facing, Captain.

She takes a few steps toward him... a cat toying withher prey.

TALLERA(continuing)You are used to fighting enemieslike yourself... people on shipswith energy weapons, defenseshields, warp drives... but thisis unlike anything you have everfaced. This is the power of themind.(beat)Pick up the phaser, Captain.

A tense beat... then suddenly:

41 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL)

As Riker, Worf, and TWO N.D. SECURITY GUARDSMATERIALIZE in the cavern. Tallera whirls around todeal with this new threat, but Picard makes a suddenrealization and shouts to his officers...

PICARDDrop your weapons! Do it!

Riker and the others respond instinctively to Picard'scommand and they drop their weapons.

PICARD(continuing)Make no aggressive movements. Theresonator amplifys violentthoughts and emotions.

The officers do as they're told. Tallera concentrateson them and the DISSONANT CHORD is heard building inthe room.

PICARD(to Tallera)That's why you wanted me to takethe phaser -- and why you wereable to kill Narik and Vekor. Itwasn't until I saw the image onthe last artifact... that Irealized what the message on theresonator was.(beat)The third image is the Vulcansymbol for peace... that symbol ispositioned between the symbols forwar and death.(MORE)

PICARD(to officers)Clear your minds of all aggressivethoughts...

Tallera concentrates... clearly this is a great effortfor her.

42 ON RIKER (OPTICAL)

As the DISTORTION forms in front of him. He steelshimself... tries to ignore it... closes his eyes...and then the distortion PASSES DIRECTLY THROUGH HIMwithout harm.

43 TALLERA

Reacts... the effort tired her.

TALLERA(shocked)No...

PICARDThink, Tallera -- two thousandyears ago, your people were beingconsumed by war... then they foundthe way of peace and logic.During the same period, theresonator was dismantled... don'tyou see the connection?(beat)When peace came to Vulcan, theresonator became useless. That iswhy it was dismantled.

Tallera summons her strength and tries one more time.

44 WORF (OPTICAL)

keeps himself calm... as a DISTORTION forms and passesTHROUGH HIM.

45 NEW ANGLE

Tallera sags to one knee... sweat pouring down herforehead... the effort is exhausting her.

STAR TREK: "Gambit, Part II" - 08/06/93 - ACT FIVE 54A.

45 CONTINUED:

PICARD(quiet)You were right... the resonatorcannot be stopped with phasers orshields. But like every otherform of violence... it can bestopped with peace.

Tallera glares up at him... makes one final effort...but the DISSONANT CHORD only briefly grows in volume...then fades away completely. Tallera drops theresonator to the ground.

Picard quietly moves to the resonator... picks it up...and carefully removes the pieces. It's finally over.OFF his expression...

RIKEROnce we realized you weren't onthe mercenary ship, we scanned thesurface for your neural implant...and tracked the signal to thecavern.

Picard nods in understanding.

DATAWhat will happen to the resonator?

PICARDSatok assured me that all threepieces will be destroyed.

DATAIt is unfortunate that it cannotbe studied. The resonator is akey artifact from a remarkableperiod of history.

PICARDNormally, I would be the first toagree with you... but perhapsthere are some things best left inthe past.

RIKERWhat's going to happen to themercenaries?

PICARDThey have been detained by theVulcan authorities, for themoment.(MORE)

Picard smiles at the joke, but Data misses the humorand thinks for a moment.

DATA(to Riker)If we are to adhere to the exactletter of Starfleet regulations, then technically sir, you havebeen declared a renegade. Infact, I believe you are facingtwelve counts of court martialoffenses. You cannot give orderseither.

Picard is quick to jump on this.

PICARD(to Data)Quite right. I'm going to getsome sleep. In the meantime Isuggest you escort Commander Rikerto the brig.
