The  highest   level  of   corrosion   is   found   in   the  UZ,   IZ,   and  SZ  areas  of  any   offshore   structure.   Corrosion   protection   is   done   via   Active  Protection,  Passive  Protection  and  Temporary  Protection.

Active   Protection   is   controlled   at   the   design   stage   by   means   of  Material  Selection  and  Construction  Details.  Temporary  Protection   is  done   where   the   equipment   is   not   critical   and   a   change   in   design   is  possible.   Passive   Protections   is   done   via   the  means   of   Coatings   and  Surface  Protection  Methods.

Typical Saline Water Conditions

1. 3.5  %  Sodium  Chloride    2. Temperature  is  around  the  range  of  50  Degree  C  to  80  Degree  C    3. Alternate  wetting  and  drying  cycles    4. High  concentration  of  salts    5. Salt  deposits  –  Salts  absorbed  in  moisture  is  more  corrosive  as  in

wet  conditions.    6. Presents  of  oxygen  along  with  salt

The problem with Traditional Coating Methods... Extensive testing   and   field  use  have  proven   that   the   future  of   coated   fasteners  lies   with   Fluoropolymer   Coatings.   Previously   hot   dip   galvanized.  Cadmium  or  zinc  plated   fasteners  were  considered  the  standard.  But  these   coatings   could   not   stand   up   to   the   corrosive   atmospheres  prevalent   in   many   industries.   After   500   hours   of   salt   spray   testing  (ASTM   B117),   fasteners   coated   with   these   Conventional   methods  showed  severe  corrosion  and.  in  some  cases  failure.

Fasteners   coated   with   Superior   shield   Fluoropolymer   coating  withstood   these   harsh   conditions   with   no   noticeable   deterioration  even   after   as   many   as   1,000   hours,   TEFC01   Fluoropolymer)   PTFE  coated  fasteners  still  could  be  easily  disassembled.

What are Fluoropolymer Coatings... they are   blends   of   high  performance  resins  and  Fluoropolymer   lubricants.  Most  of   the  useful  properties   of   Fluoropolymer   are   due   to   fluorine,   the   most   electro-‐negative  element  and  the  most  reactive  non-‐metal.  Its  atomic  radius  is  the   smallest   next   to   hydrogen,   and   it   forms   extremely   strong   bonds  with  other  elements.  When  reacted  with  carbon  in  Fluoropolymer,  the  extremely  strong,   tight  bond  produces  an  extraordinary   combination  of  properties.  These  single  coat-‐thin  films  provide  excellent  corrosion  and  chemical  resistance.

Other   benefits   of   Fluoropolymer   coatings   include   reduced   friction,  resistance  to  galling,  non-‐  stick,  non-‐wetting,  electrical  resistance  and  abrasion   resistance.   Fluoropolymer   coatings   are   applied   to   fasteners  and   various   OEM   components   to   provide   a   longer   life   before  replacement.

At   present   Fluoropolymer   PTFE   coatings   solutions   are   supplied   and  marketed  by  GMO  SOLUTION.

Getting  The  Most  Out  Of  HoldTight®  102    The  key  to  using  HoldTight®  102  efficiently  is  to  use  as  little  HoldTight®  201  –  treated  water   per   square   foot/meter   as   possible  while   achieving   the   desired  result.    The   cleanest   surfaces   (with   few   or   no   detectable   contaminants,   including  salts),   with   the   least   likelihood   of   flash   rusting   within   48   to   96   hours,   are  achieved  when  the  product  is  used  in  both  the  blast  and  wash  down  cycles  at  a  50  to  one,  water  to  HoldTight®  102,  ratio.  But  variations  are  possible  and  may  be   good   economics.   With   some   experience   you   will   be   able   to   dilute  HoldTight®   102   considerably   more   than   50   to   one   on   both   blast   and   wash  down  cycles  on  many  jobs  with  little,  if  any,  loss  of  performance.    Experiment  with   higher   dilutions   (100   to   one,   up   to   250   to   one)   in   the   strip  cycle   followed   by   a   relatively   low   pressure,   low   volume   wash   down   with  HoldTight®  102  at   the  standard  50   to  one  dilution.  Wash  down  as  soon  after  stripping   as   feasible   at   500   to   2,000  psi   or   higher   (34   to   100_  bar)   at   1   to   3  gallons  (3.8  to  11.4  Liters)  per  minute.  The  lower  the  wash  down  pressure,  the  shorter  the  rust-‐free  window  might  be  and  the  more  likely  some  small  amount  of  contaminants  will  remain  on  the  surface.    Temperature,  humidity,  and  quality  at  the  blast  site  will  also  affect  flash  rusting  All   other   things   being   equal,   low   humidity   and   moderate   temperatures   will  produce   less   flash   rusting   –   slower   flash   rusting   –   than   hot   and   humid  conditions,   and   therefore   require   less   HoldTight®   102   to   maintain   a   given  window.    Except  in  UHP  water  blasting,  the  best  practice  is  to  use  HoldTight®  102,  even  if  diluted  at  much  as  250  to  one,  in  the  strip  cycle.  Then  dilute  it  50  to  100  to  one  on  wash  down.  Again,  try  to  use  as  little  of  the  material  as  possible  to  achieve  the  desired  result.  It  is  usually  possible  to  omit  HoldTight®  102  in  the  strip  cycle  when  using  ultra  high  pressure   (UHP)  25,000  psi  +   /  2,000  +  bar)  equipment.  Some   UHP   manufacturers   recommend   against   using   any   additives   in   their  equipment,   so   consult   your   UHP   equipment   manufacturer   before   using  HoldTight®  102  in  such  machines.    Always   use   clean   (drinkable)   water   in   both   blasting   and   wash   down   cycles.  Avoid  industrial  or  “plant”  water.  Water  that  contains  a  high  concentration  of  salts,   carbonates  and  bicarbonates   (i.e.   “hard  water”),  or  other  contaminants  may  interfere  with  the  performance  of  HoldTight®  102.

Open  a  48  to  96+  hour  rust  –  free  window  between  blasting  and  coating.    Most   often   used   in   wet   abrasive   or   water   blasting,   sometimes   after   dry  blasting,   HoldTight®   102,   usually   allows   a   48   hour   interval   –   4   or   5   days   or  more  in  many  cases  –  before  coating.   It   leaves  no  film  or  residue  –   it   is  not  a  “Protective   Coating”   like   many   inhibitors   that   create   a   separate   layer   or  moisture  barrier  between  the  surface  and  the  new  coating.    Since   it   is   not   a   coating,   HoldTight®   102   will   not   interfere   with   primer   or  coating   adhesion.   Since   it   cleans   the   surface,   it   should   in   fact   enhance   long  term   performance.   It   has   been   tested   and   approved   by  most  major   coating  manufacturers.  Other  simply  recommend  it.    HoldTight®   102  works   as   a   rust   inhibitor   because   it   removes   chlorides   and  other  contaminants.    The   HoldTight®   102   formula   is   proprietary,   but   the   process   is   simple.  HoldTight®  102  acts   in  part   as   a   surfactant.   It   reduces   the   surface   tension  of  water   so   it   cleans   better   –   greatly   reducing   surface   chlorides   and   other  contaminants   that   help   cause   rust   to   form.   HoldTight®   102   super   dry’s   a  substrate,   very   fast   –   it   entirely   volatilizes   itself   and   takes  with   it   virtually   all  the  moisture  left  on  the  surface  by  the  blasting  operation.    HoldTight®  102  and  dry  blasting.    When   a   dry   blasted   surface   flash   rusts   immediately,   high   levels   of  contaminants  are  probably  present.  Washing  down  such  a  surface  with  clean  water  treated  with  HoldTight®  102,  diluted  50  to  one,  at  500  psi  (34  bar)  at  1-‐3  gpm   (3.8-‐11.4   Lpm)   or   greater,   will   dramatically   reduce   or   eliminate   the  contaminants  and  open  a  48  hours  or  bigger  window.  However,  contaminants  –   that   a   2000+   psi   wash   down   or   even   re-‐blasting   may   be   necessary.  (Whenever  very  high  levels  of  contaminants  are  present,  the  better  practice  is  to   use  wet   abrasive   or  water   blasting  with  HoldTight®   102   in   the   first   place,  rather  than  dry  blasting.)

A  Test  or  Early  Warning  Of  Extreme  Contamination  or  Bad  Water    A   surface   flash   rusts   after   the   use   of   HoldTight®   102   only   if   one   of   two  conditions,   are   present   (either   one   of   which   is   potentially   “bad   news”   for  coating  performance).    EITHER,   the  substrate   is  extremely  contaminated  and  a  higher  pressure  wash  down   or   reblast   is   necessary.   (It   should   not   be   coated   in   any   case   until   the  contaminants  are  substantially  reduced  or  eliminated.)  OR,   the   blast   water   or   abrasive   used   was   highly   contaminated   (e.g.,   hard  water)  or   acidic.  Use  of   industrial   or   “plant”  water  may   cause   this   condition.  AVOID  IT.    Therefore,   if   HoldTight®   102   fails,   STOP   what   you   are   doing,   and   call   us  immediately.  We  can  usually  come  up  with  a  cost  effective  solution.  (And  since  bad  water  may  also  damage  equipment,  especially  UHP  equipment,   call   your  equipment  supplier  too.)    Instructions  for  USE.    HoldTight®  102  is  typically  used  in  both  blast  water  and  wash  down  water.  (See  note  on  water  below).  It  is  diluted  with  water  50  to  250  to  one,  depending  on  the   application,   humidity,   and   level   of   surface   contamination.   It   is   rarely  necessary   to  dilute   it   lexs   than  50   to  one  and   frequently  possible   to  dilute   it  much  more.   (See   “Getting   the  Most  Out  of  HoldTight®  102”   above  and   “Mix  Ratios”  below).  In  some  cases  it  may  be  used  only  in  the  wash  down,  after  ultra  high  pressure   (UHP)  water  blasting  or  after  dry  blasting.   (See  document  UHP  Water   Jetting   below).   UHP   users   should   always   consult   their   equipment  manufacturer  concerning   the  use  of  HoldTight®  102  or  any  other  additives   in  their  equipment.    NOTE:   Water   that   contains   a   high   concentration   of   salts,   carbonates   and  bicarbonates  (i.e.  “hard  water”)  or  other  contaminants  may  interfere  with  the  performance  of  HoldTight®  102.  Hard  water  may  also  be  a  problem  for  some  equipment.   Consult   the   manufacturer.   Industrial   or   plant   water   is   often   a  problem.  So  should  be  avoided.  In  a  few  areas,  even  potable  (“drinkin”)  water  may  also  be  a  problem  in  most  cases  “bad”  water  can  be  corrected  easily  and  inexpensively.

For  wet  or  water  abrasive  blasting  (water  injection,  slurry.  “water  ring”)    Blast   cycle.   Start  with  250:1,   If   flash  occurs  decrease  water  portion   (increase  HoldTight®  102  portion)  in  50:1  or  100:1  increments  until  there  is  no  flash  (e.g.,  150:1,  100:1,  50:1)  NOTE:   If   blast   water   is   not   under   pressure   or   is   not   accelerated   through   a  venturi  nozzle,  start  with  100:1.  This  is  typically  the  case  with  an  external  water  ring  apparatus.  For  small  jobs  in  which  changing  ratios  is  impractical  or  for  jobs  in   which   soluble   salt   contamination   and  moisture   in   the   air   is   known   to   be  quite  high,  start  with  100:1  or  50:1.    Wash  down  (rinse)  cycle.  Begin  as  soon  as  practical  after  the  blast.  Start  with  50:1  with  wash  down  water  of  at  least  500  psi  and  water  flow  rate  of  at  least  2  gpm.   If   wash   down   water   is   2000+   psi   at   2+gpm.   Start   with   100:1.   Then  increase  water  portion   (or  decrease  HoldTight®  102)  until   flash  appears  or  or  appears  before  you  wish  it  to  (i.e.  until  your  blast  window  is  unsatisfactory).    For  UHP  water  jetting  (water  with  little  or  no  abrasive  at  25,000+  psi)    Blast  cycle.  (optional)  (applicable  if,  and  only  if,  pump  manufacturer  approves).  Start  with  250:1.   If   flash  occurs,  decrease  water  portion   (increase  HoldTight®  102  portion)  until  there  is  no  flash)    Wash   down   (rinse)   cycle.   Begin   as   soon   as   practical   after   the   blast.   If  HoldTight®  102  was  used  in  blast  cycle,  start  with  200:1.  If  HoldTight®  102  was  not   used   in   blast   cycle,   start   with   100:1   (In   either   case,   wash   down   water  pressure  should  be  at  least  500  psi  with  a  water  flow  rate  of  at  least  2  gpm).    If   the   surface   is   highly   contaminated  with   chlorides   and/or   the  water   is   very  hard  and/or  the  surface  is  deeply  pitted  or  profiled  and/or  weather  conditions  are  marginal,   it  may  be  necessary  to  decrease  water  and   increase  HoldTight®  102  from  recommended  start  ratios  to  100:1  or  50:1,  respectively.    For  dry  blasting  (wash  down  only,  of  course)    Start  with  50:1.  Wash  down  pressure  should  be  no  less  than  500  psi  at  2+  gpm,  1,500+  psi   is  highly   recommended.  Then   increase  water  portion   (or  decrease  HoldTight®  102)  until  flash  appears  or  appears  before  you  wish  to  (i.e.  until  you  blast  window  is  unsatisfactory)

HoldTight®  102  in  a  Water  Rinse  (low  to  moderate  pressure)  +

Zero  Detectable  Salts  +

No  Rust  Bloom  for  Days  on  End    UHP  does  a  fine  job  of  cleaning  metal.  Yet  a  measurable,  even  visual,  residue  of  surface  contamination  remains  in  many  cases.  Finish  the  job  with  a  HoldTight®  102  in  a  water  rinse  moderate  to  low  pressure  (1  to  3  gpm  /  7.6  to  11.4  Lpm  @  500+   psi   /   34+   bar).   HoldTight®   102   is   both   surfactant   –   it  makes   the  water  wetter  and  helps  it  clean  more  efficiently  –  and  a  rust  inhibitor  –  it  will  give  you  a   two  to   five  day  window  between  blasting  and  coating  with  zero  detectable  chlorides.  And  it  won’t  interfere  with  coating  performance,  as  10  years  of  field  experience  and  tests  by  most  major  coating  supplier  have  demonstrated.  Some  experts  say  that  UHP  can  leave  “good  rust”  that  won’t  be  a  problem.  But  can  you  be  sure  which  rust  is  good  and  which  is  not?  Why  take  the  chance?  Take  it  all  off  with  HoldTight®  102  for  pennies  per  square  foot!    What   about   Surface   Tolerant   Coatings   (STCs)?   They   help   bridge   the   gap  between  the  surface  you’ve  got  and  the  surface  you  want.  HoldTight®  102  will  close  the  gap.  It  will  give  you  much  greater  comfort  when  you  apply  STCs  (by  reducing  or  eliminating  the  oddball  conditions  that  even  STCs  can’t  tolerate)  or  permit   you   to   use   conventional   coatings  with   performance   histories   you   are  familiar  with  and  have  confidence  in.    NOTE:   Water   that   contains   a   high   concentration   of   salts,   carbonates   and  bicarbonates  (i.e.  “hard  water”),  or  other  contaminants  may  interfere  with  the  performance  of  HoldTight®  102.  So,  we  recommend  against  using  industrial  or  “plant”  water  because  it  is  more  likely  to  contain  contaminants  f  all  kinds.  Hard  water  may  also  be  a  problem  for  some  equipment.  Consult  the  manufacturer.  Potable  (“drinking”)  water  is  rarely  a  problem,  but  it  may  be  in  some  areas.  In  mose   cases   “bad”   water   can   be   corrected   easily   and   inexpensively.   If   you  follow  the  instructions  in  our  Product  Sheet  and  HoldTight®  102  is  not  working  as  you  expected,  you  probably  have  a  water  problem.
