Kuwait Oil History

The Kuwaiti desert had long stood witness to several strange black patches of a rough bituminous substance,

but it was not until the matter was investigated in 1935 that it became apparent that Kuwait‘s wealth had

remained underground for years, and was yet to be discovered.

On December 23rd, 1934, an Oil Concession Agreement was awarded to Kuwait Oil Company Limited,

formed by the Gulf Oil Corporation (presently Chevron Oil) and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (presently

British Petroleum).

The first day of June 1935 brought the good news of oil discoveries with the release of the results of the Cox

and Rhoades study entitled «Report on the Geological Structures and Oil Potentials in Kuwait».

Geological surveys were carried out during 1937 and early 1938.

On February 22nd, 1938, oil blasted from Burqan oil well for the first time.

World War II brought the development of Burqan well to a halt. Commercial production from the well did

not begin until June 30th 1946, when His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah turned a silver wheel

to start Kuwait‘s first crude oil export aboard through a pipeline to the tanker «British Fusilier.»

On March 5th, 1975, an agreement was signed by the State of Kuwait and the two oil companies (British

Petroleum and Gulf), who held a 41-year oil concession, giving Kuwait complete control over its oil resources.

The agreement became effective on December 6th, 1975, and oil industry nationalization in Kuwait started

a new historic era.

In 1980 a major development in the Kuwaiti oil industry took place when all national oil production, refining

and transportation activities were affiliated to Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). KPC was founded as an

independent institution to foster and develop Kuwait oil interests through unified and integrated systems in

terms of planning, finance, purchases and marketing.

The rapid growth of the oil industry as well as the increasing world demand for this vital commodity, led

the Government of the State of Kuwait to take a series of decisions in order to keep pace with the global

developments. On top of these decisions was the decision to establish an institution incorporating all the

activities of the country‘s oil sector. Accordingly, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) was established in

1980 as an umbrella institution to foster Kuwait‘s oil interests, rapidly growing in diversity. KPC provides

an integrated series of oil industry services through its subsidiary companies, which undertake various

exploration, production, refining, petrochemicals, marketing, retailing and marine transportation activities.

In line with its strategic objectives, KPC assumed the responsibility of protecting the hydrocarbon resources

of the State of Kuwait by means of optimal use as well as increasing Kuwait‘s hydrocarbon revenues.

To this end, KPC applies effective marketing of crude oil and other petroleum products, commits to the

development of the technical and managerial skills of its human resources and obligates itself to the

development of the national economy with the aim of achieving the goals and aspirations of the State of

Kuwait.

KPC adopted the theme of integration in all its activities through a series of operations aimed at increasing

the added value, from production to the end consumer and thus achieving what is known as the vertical

bottom-up integration from production to sales outlets.

KOC

Kuwait Oil Company(Exploration and Development)

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). was established in 1934 by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, now known as the British

Petroleum Company (BP) and American Gulf Oil Company, now known as Chevron Corporation.

Under the umbrella of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, KOC assumes exploration, drilling and production activities

of oil and gas within the State of Kuwait. KOC is also involved in the storage of crude oil and delivery to tankers

for export.

KOC exploration group continues to use technology to achieve the company’s strategic goals of finding new oil

reserves for Kuwait. Four dimensional (4D) seismic survey studies have been conducted to identify how oil and

water move through the rocks inside production reservoirs. Preparations for full field 4D seismic survey are

currently in and advanced stage. In addition, KOC is internationally recognized as being at the forefront of four

dimensional seismic onshore survey technology.

Kuwait Oil Company manages the production and export of oil and gas with the associated facilities from

more than twelve developed oil fields in the state of Kuwait. The oilfields spread over the State and split

off into four main parts of North Field, West Field, South and East Field - locally administered at the site

headquarters. Approximate distance from Ahmadi: North Field 70 miles (112 Km), West Field 38 miles

(60 Km) and South and East Fields 12 miles (20 Km).

KGOC

Kuwait Gulf Oil Company(Exploration and Development in the Divided Zone)

Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC) was established in 2002 to take over the management of Kuwait‘s interests in

the natural resources in Khafji Divided Zone, shared equally with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The concession held by Arabian Oil Company expired on 4th January 2003. At that time KGOC officially assumed

its responsibilities to operate Khafji Joint Operations in the Divided Zone in partnership with the Saudi side

represented by Aramco Gulf Operations Company, provided that both parties shall alternate the presidency every

three years.

As per its incorporation resolution, the company undertakes exploration, field development, production, refining,

transportation, storage and marketing of oil and gas in both areas of Khafji Joint Operations, pursuant to the

decision of the Minister of Oil and Energy, Chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, No. 2005 /2 issued on

January 9th, 2005. Accordingly, the management of all Kuwait‘s share in the assets and operations of Wafra Joint

Operations was transferred from Kuwait Oil Company to Kuwait Gulf Oil Company to become responsible for the

overall management of Kuwait‘s share in the area equally divided with Saudi Arabian Texaco lnc.

Kuwait Gulf Oil Company took over the actual management of Kuwait‘s share in Wafra Joint Operations on

January 1st, 2006. Khafji and Hout fields represent the main source of crude oil produced from offshore divided

zone, while Wafra is the largest onshore field in the Divided Zone.

Oil Development Company(Development of North Fields)

Oil Development Company (ODC) was founded in 2005 with a capital of KD 300 million. Represented by its

Board of Directors, the company held several meetings and took important decisions. Such decisions included

the approval of the organizational structure and the human resources policy, the delegation of financial authority,

contractual procedures and study of the construction of its head office in Ahmadi.

The main objectives of the company are to enter into contracts with a consortium of international oil companies

qualified to develop four oil fields in northern Kuwait, namely: Rawdatain, Sabriyah, Ratqa and Abdali, aiming to

raise their production capacity to 900.000 barrels per day. Such an increase will be in the interest of Kuwait and

will increase its income especially in light of increasing oil demand in the global markets.

Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company(External Exploration)

Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) was established in 1981, with core activities spanning

4 principal regions over 3 continents and 16 nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Yemen, Syria, Australia,

China, the Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Congo, Vietnam, and Bangladesh).

The company has explicitly adopted a policy of venturing external oil exploration for the purpose of attracting

foreign capital to Kuwait, and ultimately achieving profitable investments as a result. KUFPEC’s awareness of the

kuwait National Petroleum Company(Local Refining and Marketing)

Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) was established in October 1960 as a joint stock Kuwaiti company collectively owned by both the government and the private sector. In 1968 the company initiated the operation of Shuaiba Refinery, which it owns, and in May of that same year the first ever shipment of refined petroleum was exported. Later in the year 1975, complete ownership of the company was transferred to the government of Kuwait.

In 1980, KNPC went under complete ownership of the newly established Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) – in turn owned by the State of Kuwait. After the restructuring of the Kuwaiti oil sector, KNPC became responsible for the refining and gas liquefying operations in addition to the distribution of petroleum products in the local market on behalf of KPC. The company was entrusted with 3 refineries, Mina Al Ahmadi, Mina Abdulla and Shuaiba as well as the liquid petroleum gas plant at Mina Al Ahmadi. The company has pursued advancement schemes, with far reaching impact on Mina Al Ahmadi refinery in 1984, followed by another similar initiative in 1986 that pushed the refinery’s production output up to 410,000 barrels of oil per day.

Modernization efforts at Mina Abdulla refinery were concluded in 1989, and resulted in increasing the production output of the plant to 231,000 barrels of oil per day.

KNPC logo is composed of 3 colors, red representing energy, green representing the environment and blue representing technology. The design emulates an ignited flame as well as the traditional Kuwaiti Dhow. The logo was approved and adopted in 2005 and was promoted via an advertising campaign that included a number of media channels. It complements the company‘s stride towards a new vision for the future.

KAFCO

Kuwait Aviation Fuelling Company(Aviation Fuel)

Kuwait Aviation Fuelling Company (KAFCO), a subsidiary of KPC is exclusively entrusted with supplying fuel to aircrafts in the State of Kuwait. KAFCO also performs services pertaining to aviation fuelling for all operational aircrafts at Kuwait International Airport, in addition to rendering consultation and support services to the Ministry of Defense.

The company was established in 1963 as a Kuwaiti company – of which 51% was owned by KNPC and 49% by British Petroleum. Later, KAFCO became an independent entity and a KPC subsidiary.

KAFCO currently manages an automated aviation fuel depot spanning an area of 115,000 m² with a storage capacity of approximately 27 million liters. KAFCO also owns and manages various advanced equipment and hardware items utilized in aviation fuelling operations, supplying fuel to 3,000 aircrafts per month. The quality lab at KAFCO regularly performs a comprehensive array of tests to ensure the quality and safety of the fuel supplied and its conformity to universal standards.

KAFCO is a member of IATA and is an ISO (2000 - 9001) and (14001) company. It is also keen on applying stringent health, safety and environmental (HSE) procedures adopted globally, which assisted the company in maintaining an accident-free record for its field operations.

Kuwait Petroleum International(International Marketing and Refining)

Kuwait Petroleum International Company (KPI) was established in 1983 and is considered the international arm of KPC in refining and marketing. KPI markets approximately 380,000 barrels of oil per day in more than 4,000 service stations bearing the prominent “Q8” logo in a number of European nations including Italy, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

The company runs direct selling operations and enjoys the respect and trust of local and international markets alike. KPI manages an affiliate department that is responsible for marketing and selling fuel and other petroleum products.

KPI owns IDS – a matrix of automated sales outlets operating around the clock to provide diesel fuel to local and international transportation networks across the European continent.

The company provides aviation fuel to a variety of major airports worldwide, in addition to smaller regional airports. Kuwait Petroleum International Aviation Company (KPIAC) provides fuel to more than 50 airports in Europe and the Far East, serving over 200 airlines.

KPI produces, markets and exports a wide array of oils to major European and other markets. The company owns a refinery in the Netherlands with a production output of 85,000 barrels of oil per day, in addition to jointly owning another facility with Italian corporate AGIP in Milazzo, Italy at a production output of approximately 155,000 barrels of oil per day.

KPI strives to expand into developing Asian markets by constructing a number of refineries (alongside petrochemicals complex) in Vietnam and China, as well as fuel refilling stations.

PIC

Petrochemical Industries Company(Petrochemicals)

Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) was established in 1963 and is entrusted with 3 plants managing

liquefied ammonia, 3 plants producing granular urea and 1 polypropylene plant.

As for EQUATE Petrochemicals, which was established by PIC (42%) and Union Carbide – a subsidiary of DOW

Chemicals (42%), Boubyan Petrochemicals (10%) and Al Qurain Petrochemical Industries (6%), the company

includes a sizeable complex for the production of ethylene and polyethylene glycol. PIC also owns a 10% share

in Al Qurain Petrochemicals Company.

On the international front, PIC owns a (49.9%) share of EQUATE marketing in Bahrain, in addition to executing

joint venture investments (50%) with DOW Chemicals in M.I. Global Equipolymers. The Company owns other

investment stakes in Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company in Bahrain (33.3%). PIC joint ventures include an

aromatics plant, an olefins manufacturing complex and a styrene plant.

KOTC

Kuwait Oil Tanker Company(Transportation)

Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) was established in 1957 and is primarily engaged in the ownership and

management of tankers transporting crude oil, liquefied gas and other refined petroleum products. On a

commercial basis, the company operates an advanced and steady fleet, being vested with the responsibility of

overseeing the transportation sector of KPC – for the purpose of strategically extending the latter’s export reach

to all areas of the world. The company has successfully managed to preserve above average profitability by

virtue of its attention to minimizing operational costs and the prudence exercised in replacing rundown tankers

precisely when required.

KOTC also operates the liquefied gas plant, which fills and distributes liquefied gas cylinders for local industrial

and domestic consumption. By means of the Marine Agency Branch, KOTC is considered the sole agent for all

oil tankers visiting Kuwait ports, in rendering health, electric and engineering maintenance services, as well as

providing spare parts, alternative manpower and other services.
