    TUANKU SULTANAH BAHIYAH POLYTECHNIC

Report on complaints about the PTSBs students tends to stay outside compare to

    hostel.

    Term of Reference

All Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) students were given an option whether

to stay in boarding house or better known as hostels provided by college or staying

outside the campus. However, the costs of living in hostel are much lower than staying

outside. In fact there are many advantages a student could have when staying in hostel

such as facilities provided such as computer lab, food court and library but surprisingly

most of the students still prefer to rent house or apartment outside the campus ratherthan staying in hostel. Therefore, I have been asked to carry out an investigation by the

Head of the Commerce Department, Miss Rozihaya Yahya, pertaining to the factors that

led the students to live outside the campus rather than staying at the hostel.

This report is based on the finding of a survey conducted from 12 July 2010 to 15 July

2010. Recommendations have also been given on how to attract the students to live at

    the hostel.

    Procedure

    1. An interview was held with a few of the PTSBs students; and

    2. Questionnaires were distributed to 30 students in PTSB.

    1. Interview

The results of the interview held were attached in Appendices A-1 to A-5.

    2. Questionnaires

Questionnaires were distributed to 30 students (21 male students and 9 female

students) from all departments in PTSB starting 12 July 2010 to 15 July 2010.

    No. Questionnaires Percent(%)

    1. Freedom 25%2. Hostel environment - boring 8%3. Group studies 3%4. Facilities such as bank (ATM machine), 24-hours convenience shops,

    restaurants and others

    5%

    5. Stringent rules adopted by campus 25%

    6. Emphasize on junior students 6.5%7. Risk of losing valuable belongings 12%8. Limited choice of foods at the hostel cafeteria 10%9. Hostel activitiesroll-call sessions 4.5%10. Friends influence 1%

Details justification on the factors that contribute the students to live outside the

campus rather than staying at the hostel is attached as Appendix B.

    Conclusion

    1. From the interview and survey conducted the highest contributing factor that led

students to live outside campus is demands for more freedom in life and to avoid

the stringent rules adopted by campus itself. Meanwhile, the least contributing

factor is the influence by friends.

    2. Apart from the above factors, the other reasons why students prefer to stay

outside the campus are because of the risk of losing things, hostel environment,

limited varieties of foods, 24-hours outside facilities, prominence on the junior

students and the hostel activities i.e. roll-call sessions.

    Recommendations

    1. The PTSBs management should create a friendly and entertaining

environment so that can attract the students to live at the hostel.

    2. Interesting activities such as sports competition, treasure hunt around the

campus and hostel areas and many others should be held at the hostel in order

to make the environment at the hostel more fascinating.

    3. The PTSBs management should lessen the hostel rules so that the students do

not feel their freedom is being controlled. However, the management (i.e.

wardens) still needs to monitor the students behavior so that the students

will still obey to the rules adopted by campus.
