Lim Shin LidPresident
Our members’ faith and trust in me and in this Main Committee have been encouraging and defi nitely made it easier for the Club to progress.
“
“
I would like to express my gratitude to our members for their
support in making this year’s Patron’s Night a huge success.
It was indeed an honour and a privilege to welcome not only
our beloved Patron, the Governor of Penang, but also the
Chief Minister of Penang to our Club for this occasion.
The recent renovation of the Club’s tennis courts has included
the laying of our fi rst-ever synthetic turf playing surfaces. The response from our tennis players has been positive
and I am sure that members will enjoy playing on the new
courts. The refurbished Snake Temple has also reopened
with a new caterer, Pocorico. I am hoping members will
provide feedback of their opinions and recommendations on
any possible improvements to the venue and/or catering. In
addition, we are anticipating the completion of the painting
of the façade of our Club buildings in June. I am pleased to
announce that the Club has submitted our applications for
alienation and conversion of our Temporary Occupation
Licence of the boatyard land and also for the renewal of our
leasehold lands.
This is my fi nal President’s Message as my tenure shall be ending shortly. I am very touched by the well-wishes I have
been receiving from members over the past few weeks. Our
members’ faith and trust in me and in this Main Committee
have been encouraging and defi nitely made it easier for the Club to progress. Members must appreciate that our
Club practices democracy, and that it is not a must to have
concordance or uniformity in our opinions. Diversity of ideas
means members will occasionally disagree, and that is fi ne. But, in the fi nal analysis, there must be a sense of solidarity. I am glad to have seen an increasing sense of unity and
solidarity in the Main Committee and in the Club during my
tenure, and it is my hope that this will endure. We are, after
all, members of Penang Swimming Club, and we succeed or
fail as one.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members and
friends who unequivocally supported me during my time as
President, my Main Committee and sub-committees who have
contributed selfl essly, and to all the wonderful management and staff of our Club. This Main Committee will always have
the Club’s best interests at heart, and I hope that members
will give their unwavering support to those in the current Main
Committee who choose to volunteer for future service at the
upcoming Annual General Meeting. On a personal note, my
level of commitment to our Club over the past 2 years would
not have been possible without the love and understanding
from my wife and my two sons, and I thank them for their
absolute support!
I hope to see everyone at our Members’ Night and at our
Annual General Meeting in June. To all our Muslim members
and friends, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfi tri! Before signing off for the last time, let me thank all members for giving me the
great honour of allowing me to serve as your President!
Lim Khoon Seng Editor
EDITOR'SNOTE
To all our Muslim members, families and friends, we wish you
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfi tri.
On April 12, The Patron’s Night, the Club members warmly
welcomed our Patron, YAB Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji
Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Abbas and YAB Toh Puan Datin Seri
Majimor Bt. Shariff, together with YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow,
Chief Minister of Penang, and YB Tuan Zairil Khir Johari, YB
Tuan Soon Lip Chee and YB Tuan Joseph Ng. It was a gala, an
enjoyable and memorable evening for all.
This has been an active year for the Club, with excellent turn
outs for events such as the New Year Countdown, Lunar
New Year, Hari Raya, and Deepavali Celebration, Lighting of
Christmas Tree. Not to forget the Swimming Carnival, and
Scuba Carnival, and many more. Our Swimmers has done us
proud this year by emerging number one in competition in the
PASA Swimming Championship, by winning both the Chief
Minister’s Challenge Trophy, and the President’s Challenge
Trophy. Unfortunately, the scope this simple Note does not
permit me to share with you many more activities from other
sporting section and group.
Overall for the Club, we had a great and productive year, and
continue to make good progress in upgrading our facilities.
We have completed the Rock Embankment which provides
enhanced protection to our sea fronts, ending many decades
of anxiety over the safety (from the sea) at our Swimming

Pool area. Slope protection at the Sea Front mitigates the
ponding problem on wet days, renewal of pumping units for
our Swimming Pool ensures supply of clean and fi ltered sea water to our swimming pool, the resurfacing of the Tennis
Courts, repair of Ramp at the Boat Yard, and, still in progress,
a new coat of paint for a face lift to our Club.
I wish to hereby acknowledge the many feedbacks, comments,
advice from members both on the Nautilus, and also on other
issues in the Club. This has been most helpful in our work and
decision making, I especially appreciate the support, goodwill
and friendship. Thank you.
This is the last edition of Nautilus for this Term 2018/19, and
I wish to convey my gratitude to members of the Editorial
Board, staff and the Publisher for their diligence and untiring
efforts in the production of this newsletter. It has been a
great team effort, and thank you, what a joy working together
with all of you.

JUNIOR SWIMMING CIRCUIT 2019 - 1ST LEG
Our club sent a total of 24 swimmers to Shah Alam to take part
in the 1st leg of SPORTEXCEL / MILO / NSC / ASUM JUNIOR
SWIMMING CIRCUIT. Under the leadership of our team
manager Marco Wong and the guidance of our chaperons,
we enjoyed the meals and the stay during our time there.
Furthermore, we want to thank Coach Liu for her dedication
which contributed to the swimmers’ excellent results.
Once again, despite being one of the smallest team
throughout Malaysia, our swimmers did not fail to make PSC
proud again. This meet attracts a total of 1180 swimmers
nationwide with 43 clubs registered. With a small team of 24,
we were able to deliver a total of 5 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze
and emerge 5th in the overall ranking. Well done, swimmers!

The initial inertia was perturbing, but as mid morning
approached, the momentum quickened and the Marshall was
kept active recording increasing numbers of weigh-ins and
heavier catches. It was sheer coincidence that at 11.35am,
Beh Ping Seng and Danny Lee simultaneously approached
the Marshall’s table with their respective catches, which
ultimately led to Beh Ping Seng taking the 2nd prize and
Danny Lee being confirmed the champion of the “Angler of the Day (Open Event).” Leong Siew Chan, who for some time
had held onto 3rd place, was eventually displaced by Helen
Low, about 30 minutes before the competition ended.
At 1.00pm the siren signalled the conclusion of the 4 hour
competition, with the following results:
The Angling Section Annual Prize Presentation Dinner has
always been an evening to commemorate our magnanimous
Donors and Sponsors, who have so generously supported
our Section, and helped turn events into memorable
achievements for the champions and other prize winners of
the various competitions held throughout the year. We were greatly honoured by the presence of our Club
President Mr. Lim Shin Lid, Mr. Ooi Theng Chee, Mr. Ung Peng
Joo and Mr. Danny Lee and their charming wives. However
we regretfully missed the presence of Dato’ Mahinder Singh,
Club VP Encik Najieb Ariff, Mrs. Amara Loh and Mr. Chan Kean
Hin; who were unable to attend due to prior commitments.
The evening commenced with speeches from our Angling
Chairman and Club President, followed by an 8-course
dinner, interspersed with the presentation of trophies and
prizes. The Angling Committee wishes to thank the Members,
Donors and Sponsors for a successful and enjoyable evening.
Our heartiest congratulations to the champions and winners,

Although it rained heavily the evening prior, the morning of
Sunday March 31st seemed ideal for an offshore fi shing trip. With all participants split into 4 Teams, and safely on board,
the four PSC boats promptly set out to the vicinity of Pulau
Tikus Island, for the fi nal offshore fi shing competition of the year. As it was the season for Whiting, the winners of the
day’s team competition were to be selected from the highest
average total weight of Whiting caught by the team.
Out at sea, the anchors did not remain long in the water, as
all four boats were constantly changing locations in search of
Whiting. It was unusual, something was amiss, not only was
PULAU TIKUS OFFSHORE FISHING31 MAR 2019
there no Whiting but the sea seemed devoid of any fi sh. Even the familiar Gelama was markedly absent. Also unexpected
was the high number of jelly fi sh fl oating in the waters, and the occasional catch of Duri, Tripod (aka ikan Lembu) and
octopus.
As a last attempt, we asked Basri to take the Rescue boat
farther out to sea, and it was only when we arrived in this
deeper water, that we heard an elated cry from Koko - she
had caught the elusive Whiting. Meanwhile, onboard Angler
VIII, Alex had also managed to catch Whiting. At the close of
competition, the results were apparent - Alex & his Team D
emerged champion whilst Koko & her Team A took 2nd place;
their catches of the much treasured Whiting being 114gms
and 64gms respectively.
One can safely claim that the offshore fi shing trip of 31/3/2019 was the most disappointing of all trips.
The sailing section organized a beach carnival event on the
2nd of March where about 80 members turned up for the
event. The event kicked off with a morning demonstration
from the PSC Dragon Boat team, followed by a sail boat-ride
event where members were brought along for a joyride on
the catamaran. After lunch, members were treated to power
boat rides and kayak activities. In the late afternoon, the PSC
dragon boat team demonstrated their rowing skills through
a rowing tug-of-war. The event ended with a highly spirited
dinner.

It was a great fun dive trip with good weather and visibility
for 7 members who came back from the Live-on-Board to
Similan, Phuket 4D3N on 22 February 2019. First timers get
the experience of living on board. Though the trip is short but
memorable, as Similan Islands is well known for its best dive
site in Thailand.
Another group of 13 members went on a fun dive to
Tulamben, Bali 5D4N on 23 March 2019. It consisted mainly of
shore dives (morning, afternoon and night dives) and a 1-day
boat dive. Beautiful Balinese style accommodation and local
cuisines were served. Overall, the dive trip was well planned
and successful even with some poor visibility. The wonderful
part is when the dive master threw in a BBQ feast and a
sight-seeing trip to Kuta Beach which was not included in the
itinerary.

AEROBICS GROUP AGM 2019
The Aerobics Group held their AGM/Annual Dinner on
Friday, 22nd March at Level 14, MPH2. The meeting went
smoothly without a hitch after which a delectable 8-course
dinner was served. We had a huge party with everyone
enjoying themselves to the max. All our instructors banded
together to keep us moving and grooving and we danced
the night away under their direction whilst tucking into the
delicious food. The end result of the whole meeting and
partying was that everyone was in agreement that they truly
enjoyed the classes organised by the Committee. It was a
fun night for all and we hope that the coming year is going
to be even better.
The following members were elected into offi ce for the new term 2019/2020.

The Dance Sport Group organised the Milonga Workshop on
Sunday, 17 March 2019 at the Level 1 dance studio, which was
attended by 16 members, and conducted by Mr Chan Soon

MILONGAWORKSHOP
According to Wikipedia, “Milonga dance incorporates the
same basic elements as Tango but with a greater relaxation
of legs and body. Movement is normally faster and is usually
a kind of rhythmic walking with a more humorous and rustic
style in contrast to the serious and dramatic Tango.”
All attendees had a fruitful and enjoyable afternoon learning
the basics of this new dance.

About 170 members and guests turned up in their fi nery for Dance Sport Group’s Grand Theme Night held on Saturday, 9
March 2019, for another fun-fi lled night of non-stop dancing and revelry.
Themed “Wild Havana Night”, most of the ladies were attired
in bright, colourful, tropical colours, with one or two sporting
turban-like headgear Cuban-style.
Club President, Mr Lim Shin Lid and his charming wife, Yu
Hsin, the Club Captain, Mr Michael Cheong were invited
to grace this exciting occasion and after short speeches by
Dance Sport Treasurer, Mr S J Ewe and President, Mr Lim,
the party got underway, with an 8-course dinner served,
accompanied by fi ne wines.
Guests eagerly awaiting the Highlights of the evening,
were not disappointed. All were all agog when Belly Dance
instructor, Ms Serene Keng, gyrated, shimmied and shook in
her glittering costumes, raising the evening’s temperature a
notch or two.
Not to be outdone, the teenaged pair of Yee Wen and
Amanda from Danz Club, showed off amazing moves and
fancy footwork, performing the highly energetic Paso Doble,
Samba and Cha Cha.
Music from the band had everyone burning the fl oor cha cha-ing, waltzing and twisting all night long. During band
intervals, the line dancers had their chance with nifty numbers
like The Eurodance and Good Golly Miss Molly.

DARTS GROUP 20TH AGM30 MAR 2019
Due to traffi c congestion, resulting in members arriving late, the 2019 AGM was called to order, by Chairman A.D. Morley,
at the delayed time of 7.20pm.
In welcoming members, the Chairman stated that he did not
intend to elaborate on the Darts Group activities during the
past 12 months, as they were detailed in the Annual Report.
Neither did he wish to dwell on the problems surrounding
certain aspects of the Club’s operations, which inevitably
would have a “knock on” effect on some, or all, S & G. Rather,
he wished to use the “Opening Address”, in this, his 9th and
fi nal, chairing of a Darts AGM, to acknowledge those who had assisted over his years of tenure.
First to be mentioned were “those often forgotten”, the
catering and bar staff, especially Areyenti and Hossain - for
their effi cient service, especially at the SeaFront during Inter Club Darts Matches.
He thanked ex President K. H. Chan and previous Darts
Group Chairmen, Beh Ping Seng and Ian Nicholas, for their
assistance and advice, after his unexpected “mid-term”
appointment in early 2011.
Also, Darts Committee members, past, and particularly, the

authority and responsibility.
Moving on:
• To confi rm and adopt the Minutes of the 19th AGM.• To receive, consider & adopt the Annual Report 2018-19.
A brief interval followed the Darts Group AGM, during which
period announcements were made introducing guests, M C

of the Trophy Sponsors (Mr. See Ewe Lin [Men’s Trophy -

were unable to attend due to prior commitments.
This was followed by a short address by Club President Lim

With the presentation fi nished, and with members in a “mischievous” jovial mood, calls were made for incoming
Darts Chairperson, Yvonne J. Lim, to say a few words on
behalf of the new Darts Committee.
Yvonne responded by saying she hoped that all members,
MC invitees and Sponsors were enjoying the evening. She
thanked the outgoing Darts Committee for their tireless
work over recent years, and said she was confi dent that the new Committee would continue similarly, and also hoped to
introduce new Competition formats.

KARAOKE GROUP AGM 2019

The opening performance by a group of our club’s line
dancers to the song “Rasa Sayang” set the mood for
an evening of singing and dancing on 24 March 2019.
Ladies came in their sarong kebayas, sarees, cheongsams,
Punjabi suits and glittery evening gowns while a handful
of gentlemen came in their Baju Melayus complete with
songkoks. The theme for the Karaoke Annual Dinner was
actually 'what Malaysians wear'. Whatever they wore, they
were on the fl oor most of the time, dancing.
Besides good wishes and hugs, 21 members born in
the months of February and March received an angpow
each which, if wishes come true could make them instant
millionaires! However, the biggest excitement and
anticipation was on the lucky draws which everybody would
have won something.
At the AGM on 14 April, the following were elected into the
committee for the term 2019/2020:
Eric & team would like to welcome Victoria and Sharon, and
thank Michael Quah, Elaine Tan and Jennifer Cheah for their
contributions.
We wish Elaine a speedy recovery from her health condition.

The Penang Sports Club International Invitational Tennis
Tournament 2019 proves to be getting popular by attracting
good players from all over Asia Pacifi c. With such a demand we are lucky to have enter our men’s team for the tournament
this year. However our ladies team didn’t manage to enter as
the registration closed earlier, way before the deadline. The
tournament held from 8th to the 10th March 2019 consisted
a total of 24 men’s, 12 ladies' and 5 grand masters' teams.
Our men’s team were placed together with Magnifi cent 7 from Perth, Maksak Perak and Meerkats Papas from KL. We managed
to win one against Magnifi cent 7 and so our team only qualifi ed for the plate event. In the plate event, we were placed together
with STF Cari Makan from Penang, Penang Sports Club
Lightning and CRC Taiping. Once again we only managed to win
one against Penang Sports Club Lightning, as such we didn’t
manage to qualify further. Overall, it was defi nitely a worthwhile experience for all the players.

The surfaces of the two Tennis Courts at the Club have been
resurfaced in March, and are now completed. On April 6th,
a group of tennis players and their families gathered at the
court at about 5:30pm to witness the opening of the Courts
by our Trustee, Datuk Seri Ariff and our President, Mr Lim
Shin Lid. The courts are now refurbished with artifi cial turf instead of the Hard Surface previously. The new surface, an
artifi cial turf, made of 20mm Polyethylene material, will have a softer surface as compared with the hard court. This is
defi nitely easier on our ankles and knees especially when players are having a hard game. It is also more “weather
friendly” being less hot during a sunny day, and likely be
playable even in a slightly wet condition.

YOGA AT BELLEVUE & HABITAT, PENANG HILL
Sun, 31 March 2019 | Penang Hill (Group Event)
Catching the first morning train as early as 6.30 a.m., some 20 Yoga Group members and Yoga Instructor, Anna Yeoh
clambered onto the funicular railway to arrive at the top of
Penang Hill. Heading straight towards the Bellevue Hotel
lawn area, overlooking Georgetown through the morning
mist, sunrise greeted us as we posed for the iPhone,
Samsung and Huawei moments.
After a hot drink, compliments of Bellevue, we got down
on our yoga mats for our purpose of the day - Yoga. After
an hour’s workout of stretching, we took a leisurely stroll
towards The Habitat - a world class rain forest discovery
centre set on the fringes of a 130 million-year old forest on
Penang Hill.
At The Habitat, we explored the Nature Trail and Langur
Way Canopy Walk and arrived at the iconic Curtis Crest
where we practiced several yoga poses and took a
stroll around the top of Curtis Crest to view the historic
bungalows of Bel Retiro, Craig Hotel and others.
