SPECIAL NEEDS AT SSBIN the recent report on the Malaysian Education Blueprint2013 to 2025 announced by the Education Ministry lastAug 10, it reported an increase in special needs students’enrolment for inclusive education programme from 13.4%in 2013 to 23.2% in 2015.

This is a clear indication of the demand for special needseducation programme for students due to an increase ineither cases or in detection and awareness. This problem isnot only confined to Malaysia, many countries alreadyhave support programmes within and outside the educationsystem. In fact, international airports are training staff toidentify and assist travelers by reducing travel time andthat speaks volumes for special needs among the worldpopulation.

Special needs community should not be denied theopportunity to benefit from the teaching and learningavailable in local education system and they should besupported to develop and fulfill their dreams. There arevarious support groups within the community that providespecial needs education, therapy and support.

Sri Bestari has set up the Education and Learning SupportAcademy ( ELSA) to support those in the mainstream withlearning disabilities and dyslexia. In recent months therequests and interest for special needs support for autisticchildren have increased and Sri Bestari expanded theELSA for Autism, which is an exclusive system.

ELSA for Autism is divided into skills based aspects suchas pre-vocational and multi-Vocational skills, communication skills, social skills, fine and gross motorand manipulative skills.

The therapy requirement includes art, as well as music, speech and occupational therapy, all of which are essentialfor personal growth and development.

“We are truly humbled by the needs and demand for ourspecial needs education support and are patiently doing allthat is necessary to work hand in hand with parents andchild to ensure their educational needs are met at this olderstop centre available at the school in ELSA" said SriBestari’s educational therapist and teacher Daisy Andrew.

BESTARI NEWS OCT 2016

IBSE IMPLEMENTATIONSekolah Sri Bestari has made tremendous strides intransforming the teaching and learning of science throughinquiry. This shift is in line with the emphasis given tohigher order thinking skills in the past-few years.

Late last year. the school was selected as one of fiveschools in the country to implement the Inquiry BasedScience Education (IBSE) conducted by the Academy ofSciences Malaysia under Phase 2 of the pilot programme.which will run from January this year to December nextyear. The results of Phase 1 of the pilot programmeinvolving four national schools in 2012 producedexceptional exam results for classes that introduced IBSE

The IBSE is a Foundation La main a la pate programme inFrance where the appreciation of science is via inquiry andstudents are guided to explore and question an issue inscience with a hypothesis derived and experimentallytested before drawing conclusions to prove or disprove ahypothesis.

This approach requires instructors or teachers to facilitateinquiry among students while guiding and supporting themto devise an experiment to test their hypothesis. It is a farcry from the standard experiment set up for an area inscience where students determine the one best and correctanswer.

In reality, any scientific problem is often affected byvariables and students need to appreciate and understandthis by their own effort. Sri Bestari start attended trainingon Innovative Teaching & Learning of Science throughlBSE organised by the International Science. Technologyand innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation(lSTlC) under the auspices of the United NationsEducational. Scientific and Cultural Organisation over thepast two years.

Dr David Wilgenbus and Dr Henri Plande from theFondation La main a la pate facilitated the intensivetraining programme and provided insights into the criteriato be used for assessment and support needed forimplementation of IBSE for teachers.

Dr. Steven Baptist, our Principal and a participant in theprogramme said, 'The passing down of knowledge andinput to teachers who handle science classes is the key to asuccessful IBSE rollout, besides the needed support interms of policies and resources."

He said as part of the ISTiC lBSE training programme thisyear, a team of teacher trainers visited the school toobserve three science classes to gauge the level of inquiryin science implemented in those classes and the resultswere very encouraging.
