    Question 1

Read the following text and complete the given task

Volcanic landforms come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Each structure has a

unique eruptive history. The three main volcanic types are shield volcanoes, cinder cones and

    composite cones.

Shield volcanoes are produced by the accumulation of fluid basaltic lavas. Shield

volcanoes have the shape of a broad, slightly domed structure that resembles a warriors shield.

Most shield volcanoes have grown up from the deep-ocean floor to form islands. Examples of

shield volcanoes include Mauna Loa in Hawaii and Iceland.

Ejected lava fragments the size of cinders, which harden in the air, build a cinder cone.

Cinder cones have a very simple shape determined by the steep-sided slope that loose

pyroclastic material maintains as it comes to rest. Cinder cones are usually the product of a

single eruption that sometimes lasts only a few weeks and rarely more than a few years. Once

the eruption ends, the magma in the pipe connecting the vent to the magma chamber solidifies,

and the volcano never erupts again. Cinder cones are found by the thousands all around Earth.

Some are located in volcanic fields while others form on the sides of larger volcanoes. Sunset

crater in Arizona is a large cinder zone.Earths most beautiful and potentially dangerous are composite cones or

stratovolcanoes. Most are located in relatively narrow zone that rims the Pacific Ocean,

appropriately called the Ring of Fire. This nearly continuous chain of volcanoes stretches from

the Aleutian Islands to Japan, the Philippines and New Zealand. A composite cone is a large,

nearly symmetrical structure composed of layers of both lava and pyroclastic deposits. One

example is Mount Ranier, Washington. For the most part, composite cones are the product of

gas-rich magma having an andesitic composition. The silica-rich magmas typical of composite

cones generate viscous lavas that can only travel short distances. These cones may generatethe most explosive eruptions that eject huge quantities of pyroclastic material.

    Question 2

Read the following text and complete the given task.

Sports drinks, taste salty because they contain salts of elements such as sodium,

potassium, and calcium. Salts are examples of electrolytes. An electrolyte is a substance that

ionizes or dissociates into ions when it dissolves in water. The resulting solution can conduct

electric current. The electrolytes in sports drinks help restore the balance of ions in the body.

Electrolytes can be classified as strong or weak. Strong acids and bases are strong

electrolytes because they dissociate or ionize almost completely in water. For example, sodium

hydroxide is a strong electrolyte that produces many ions in the water. Salts are also strong

electrolytes. When potassium chloride dissolves in water, it dissociates into potassium and

chloride ions. In contrast, acetic acid is a weak electrolyte because it partially ionizes.

Batteries and other portable devices that produce electricity also contain electrolytes.

Car batteries use lead plates in combination with the electrolyte sulfuric acid to produce

electricity. Space shuttles use devices called fuel cells that provide electricity to power all the

crafts devices. Fuel cells use strong base potassium hydroxide as an electrolyte. Instead of

metal electrodes, the fuel cells use oxygen and hydrogen brought from Earth. At the same time

that fuel cells provide electrical energy to power a space shuttle, they also produce water that

    the crew can use.
