Messy situation: At 6.aOpm, the road is practicallygridlocked as motorists try tQ,squeeze their.way through the parked vehicles.

Residents fed up with inconsiderate parents and school bus driversBy LlM CHIA [email protected]

OUTSIDE almost all schools inthe Klang Valley, cars parkedand double-parked by the

roadside before and after schoolhours are a common sight.

The SJK(C) Han Ming at KampungBaru Batu 14 in Puchong has notbeen spared such a scenario, andresidents in the surrounding areasare obviously upset with the chaotictraffic situation.

It is especially bad when someinconsiderate parents and school busdrivers dropping off or picking upstudents simply park their vehiclesanyway they like, blocking motoristsusing the road.

According to Lakhvir Singh, whouses the road in front of the school toget tP work and return home, thevehicles are double-parked on bothsides, leaving little space for othercars to squeeze through.

Lakhvir said that such a situationhad often resulted in a massive con-gestion at the stretch of road, asmoving cars had to slowly inch theirway through. .

"I see many private MPVs waitingin a long line h7 pick up students. Dothey actually have permits for this?"he asked.

'There are many heavy vehicleslike trucks, tankers, and trailers usingthe road and they are unable to pass

»There are also children crossing theroad and I am concerned about theirsafety with so many vehicles around«LAKHVIRSINGH

through. This has created a bit ofhavoc and traffic jam," Lakhvir said.

The 63-year-old securitygiJardsaid that every morning between7am and 7.30am, afternoon between12.30pm to 1.30pm, and eveningfrom 6pm to 7pm, the road will becongested. These are the times stu-dents are being dropped off or pickedup.

"There are also children crossingthe road and I'm concerned abouttheir safety, with so many vehiclesaround the area," Lakhvir said.

"Moreover, this area is not well-litso this poses a safety risk. I have toldthe school about the matter but theschool authorities could not do muchas the situation is outside the schoolarea," he said.

"When I wrote to the authorities, there was no reply," Lakhvir said, adding that he had witnessed a fewnear misses in the mornings.

He uses the road as a alternativeroute to get back,to his home inBandar Bukit"Puchong.

School principal Cheong Shiu Thin, when contacted, said the school hadits own wardens to guide pupilsacross the road safely.

According to Cheong, the wardensare mainly the school workers whoare paid to perform the extra duty. The teachers also take turns to take

care of the students waiting to bepicked up.

"The school workers and someteachers had attended a traffic con-trol course last year," she said.

The wardens wear the orangevestS provided by the Selangor RoadSafety Department.

Cheong said the school had alsowritten to the SubangJaya MunicipalCouncil (MPSJ) to request for zebracrossings outside the school andextra street lighting, but there was

no reply. .

"We can only look after childrenwithin ,our school compound. Thetraffic outside is beyond our control,"she said.

'There are also some inconsider-ate parents who make. V-turns onthe two-way road after picking uptheir children, thus contributing tothe traffic chaos," she said.

"Actually, there are the row ofshops opposite our school and' empty

c parkingspaces further awayfor wait-ing parentS to park, but many do notwantto walk that far," Cheong said.

She'said at one time, there was asignboard put up by the local author-ities indicating when heavy vehicleswould not be allowed to use the roadbut there was no enforcement on theban.

Cheong is not sure when or whohad removed the signboard.

On the MPVs allegedly being usedas illegal school buses, Cheong saidthe school authorities had no say orcontrol on the matter as it was aprivate arrangement between theparents and the MPV owners.

The school's Parents-TeacherAssociation (PTA) chairman WongKok Pin said other schools also hadprivate MPVs to ferry children to aridfrom school.

"Although we are worried thatthese drivers may not have the prop-

erpermitS, the parents are allowingit. So what can we do?" Woni( said.
