It u,as a lovely evening. Amir and I decided to follow our f i iends to a rivernearby fbr a switn. I 'uvas already 13 years old at that t irne. Amir, however, wasbarely 9. When we reached the bridge. everybody plunged into the r,vater exceptAmir. We had a good time swimming in the river while Amir just sat on the bridger, vatching us. I tr ied to persuade him tojurnp into the river, buthe refused.

After a while, I saw Arnir standing up. "Corne on, Amir, don't be afraid,"I shouted. Trying to be brave, Arnir plunged in, oblivious of the drifting wood intlre river. Unfortunately, it was too late r,vhen I realized it. Amir knocked his headagainst the wood and went into a coma. He later underwent several operations, buthe was st i l l unconscious.

I felt terribly guilty as my conscience over\ rhehned me. I could never facelifb if anything worse happened to rny only brother. I didn't lneall to hur-t hirn. I.just r,vanted him to share the fun that rny fi iends and I \^/ere having. My parentswere horrified at first, but soon, they took pi4, on me. They realized that I was inncl better condition than rny brother was in. They consoled rne by saying that itwas.iust an accident and that I could not foresee his fate. I rnissed rny brother a lotand felt very much alone. I spent most of rny days talking or reading to hirn at thehospital. hoping that l-re would get better.

Orre day, while I lvas tell ing him what I did at sclrool, he ntoved his f ingers.I u'as so happy that I irnrnediately called all the nurses and doctors. They assuredttte that Amir r,r,ould it'nprove. A fortnight later', he r,vas able to u'alk and we talkedlike the ,{ood old days. That was the happiest day in my l ife.
