1925: 1 December, SS Cotopaxi, having departed Charleston, South Carolina two days earlierbound for Havana, Cuba, radioed a distress call reporting that the ship was sinking. She wasofficially listed as overdue on 31 December.

1941: USS Proteus(AC-9), lost with all 58 persons on board in heavy seas, having departed St.Thomas in theVirgin Islands with a cargo of bauxite on 23 November. The following month,her sister ship USS Nereus (AC-10) was lost with all 61 persons on board, having alsodeparted St. Thomas with a cargo of bauxite, on 10 December. According to research by RearAdmiral George van Deurs, USN, who was familiar with this type of ship from their service inthe USN, the acidic coal cargo would seriously erode the longitudinal support beams, makingthese aging and poorly-constructed colliers extremely vulnerable to breaking up in heavyseas.

1963: SS Marine Sulphur Queen, lost with all 39 crewmen, having departed Beaumont, Texas, on2 February with a cargo of 15,260 tons of sulphur. She was last heard from on 4 February,when she was in rough, nearly-following seas of 16 feet, with northerly winds of 25-46 knots,and listed as missing two days later. The Coast Guard subsequently determined that the shipwas unsafe and not seaworthy, and never should have sailed. The final report suggested fourcauses of the disaster, all due to poor design and maintenance of the ship.

crash to the surface as early as Sept. 23, NASA officials said.The UARS -- short for Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite -- has been in

orbit since the space shuttle Discovery launched it in 1991, but it's graduallycoming closer and closer to the ground as it encounters friction from the

upper reaches of the atmosphere.NASA officials told ABC News overnight that they won't know where the

satellite will hit until two hours before it enters the Earth's atmosphere,moving at 5 miles per second.

What are your chances of being hit by debris from it? About one in 21 trillion,NASA said. When you add up the 7 billion people now alive, the chancesthat someone, somewhere on the planet could get hit are 1 in 3,200.

The "productive science life" of the satellite ended in 2005 when it ran out offuel, according to NASA's website. Other satellites launched more recentlyhave used their last fuel to ditch themselves in the Pacific. The vast majorityburn up as they enter the atmosphere.

UARS is unusually large, though. NASA's orbital debris office said it will breakinto pieces as it crashes toward Earth but not all of it will burn up. NASAscientists have identified 26 separate components, with a total mass of1,200 lbs., that will likely survive, spreading out over 400 to 500 miles.

controllers onEarth in April is still adrift in space, with engineers keeping a close eye onthe wayward satellite as it approaches two other spacecraft this month.

The Galaxy 15 satellite is currently drifting along a stable and predictablepath, according to its communications satellite fleet operator Intelsat. Themain focus now is preventing Galaxy 15 from interfering with other nearbysatellites, including two of Intelsat's own, though no collisions are expected.

"The overall goal is to minimize disruption," Steve Good, Intelsat's globaldirector of customer solutions engineering, told SPACE.com. "It's in all ofour best interests to minimize any disruption.

The company is preparing several techniques to mitigate potential signalinterference as Galaxy 15 is set to fly by two other Intelsat satellites thismonth: Galaxy 13 and Galaxy 14.

The 4,171-pound Galaxy 15 satellite went rogue on April 5, when it

stopped responding to controllers on the ground.Yet, while the satellite veered from its assigned orbital slot of 133 degrees west

longitude, 36,000 kilometers over the equator, the "zombie satellite"maintained an active payload, with its C-band telecommunications stillfunctioning.

Interference from Galaxy 15's stuck-on signal is the main concern, since thechance of it actually crashing into other satellites is remote to non-existent,Intelsat officials have said.

Of the 59 GPSsatellites launched to date, 31 are still operating. Of those 31, 17 are

past their life expectancy the oldest was launched in 1990. So if Iwere planning a military incursion into yet another trackless third-worldregion, I'd have reason to think better of it.

Worries about the GPS arose in May 2009 when the U.S. GovernmentAccountability Office (GAO) released a report saying, "It is uncertain

whether the Air Force will be able to acquire new satellites in time tomaintain current GPS service without interruption. If not, some militaryoperations and some civilian users could be adversely affected."

The problem is that 24 functional GPS satellites are required for completeglobal coverage. With 31 still beeping we've got plenty of spares for themoment. However, due to a combination of schedule slips, construction

problems, and cost overruns, we haven't been launching new satellites fastenough to replace those likely to fail soon. The GAO estimated that over the
