If someone were to ask me to name Gods best gift to man, I would readily say it isthat of speech. I arrived at this conclusion rather unexpectedly, not after months of

dogged research but after a seven-day period of utter silence. Consumption of the wrongfood, overwork and too many hours staring at the computer to meet deadlines all

contributed to the no-voice malady. The first to notice my condition were those closest tome. I could no longer bother to nag them into submission. In the event that I wanted tovoice my displeasure over something that was done not quite the way it should have been,

they would innocently wave their hands and say, We cannot hear you!

Next, and with great agony, I was made to understand the meaning of frustration. Icouldnt speak so I couldnt express what I meant and this led to a number of exasperatingsituations. The char koay teow man thought I was dumb as in stupid when I could not

answer his questions. The lychee seller cheated me by mixing bad lychees with the badones as I couldnt argue. My lovesick dog ran out of the gate because I couldnt call out toit.

My voice is crucial to my job and desperate situations call for desperate measures.

Although, not one for traditional medicine, I had no choice but to run to the Chinese

herbalist for his reputed cure for hoarse throats after everything else had failed. I saw himwrite a long list of ingredients. Not understanding a word he wrote, I imagined my

condition must be terribly serious to warrant the huge amount of dried leaves, bark,cicadas, fuzzy bees and other creepy crawlies dispensed. Seeing the horror on my face,

the herbalist triumphantly wrapped the foul stuff in brown paper. He warned me that Iwould stand to lose my voice altogether if I failed to take all that he had prescribed.

Hurrying home, I immediately inspected the brown packages. If I had heardcorrectly, the herbalist told me to add four bowls of water to what he had given me and to

boil it till one bowl of fluid was left. I searched the kitchen cabinet and was faced with anew problem. Which type of bowl did he mean? There were Chinese porcelain bowls with

pictures of ruddy-cheeked children playing ping-pong, Japanese rice bowls for nightswhen we decided to go Japanese, plastic bowls for picnics and lastly, good, old, sturdymelamine bowls.

All the bowls on the shelf seemed to scream, Choose me, choose me. Finally, Ithought that since he was a Chinese herbalist, he probably must have meant a Chinese

porcelain bowl. I boiled the foul-smelling concoction day and night. The whole housestank. The children, however, had a wonderful time inspecting the creepy crawlies. They

looked really fascinating, all dried up with their innards removed, their feet curled up likecurly fries. With religious fervour, I drank the potion at the recommended hours. Such

was my unquestioning obedience that the last strands of rationalism and scientific logicwere dispelled.

With a heavy heart, I awaited the return of my voice. The first thing I did when Iwoke up each day was to believe that I could say hello to myself out loud again. Sadly I

could only manage a croak. Believe me, I felt like a toad! Then as if by an assimilation ofimages, the toad reminded me of the anguish I had felt sometime back. I was aware then

that I lacked grace and tolerance and had a temper that was, at most times, short.

My last birthday wish was to appreciate others more and my wish was granted in

my days of silence. My condition made me more appreciative of others. I also becamemore graceful. How I appreciated the one who awoke in the night to give me warm water

to ease my congested lungs. How I appreciate the little hands that thumped my back tohelp clear my airway of phlegm.

Most of all, I learnt the meaning of grace: the grace not to reply in anger, the gracenot to criticise when expectations are not met, the grace to know that without a voice, I

am as imperfect as anyone else.
