Growing in FAITHFAITH

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith

ONE MINUTE MEDITATION: Christ the King What does it mean to say Christ is King? Do we give him our Sundays only, or the whole week? Set aside ten min-utes for God. Offer him the events of your day and say, “Your will be done.”

“No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [the world]” (Luke 16:13).

FEASTS AND CELEBRATIONS November 21 – St. Cecilia (3rd Century). A native of Rome, St. Cecilia was forced to marry although she wanted to consecrate herself to God. She eventually con-verted her husband and both were martyred for the faith. She is the patroness of musicians.

November 27 – 1st Sunday of Advent. During this four-week season, we anticipate the Messiah’s birth, remem-bering the time when he was awaited. We also look for-ward to Christ's reign and his coming on the last day. We light candles in an Advent wreath each night of the season to signal the coming of Christ, who said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).

PRO ORANTIBUS DAY (“FOR THOSE WHO PRAY”)

Catholics throughout the world are encouraged to honor the cloistered and monastic life on November 21, 2016.

It is a day of thanksgiving, solidarity and support for contempla-tive religious who spend their lives in total dedication to God in union with Jesus and interceding for the salvation of all.

Pope John Paul II established this worldwide ecclesial event in 1997, to be observed annually on the Memorial of Our Lady’s Presentation in the Temple. It is a special day to thank those in cloistered and monastic life for serving as “a leaven of renewal and of the presence of the spirit of Christ in the world.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has spoken of the tremendous value of the cloistered, contemplative life. He referred to such religious as “the heart” which provides blood to the rest of the Body of Christ. He noted that in their work and prayer, together with Christ, they are the “heart” of the Church, and in their desire for God’s love they approach the ultimate goal.

Prayer in Support of the Cloistered Life

Eternal Father,

We praise and thank you for the gift of the cloistered and monastic life. This special vocation—“to be with the Lord”—is of great importance to the Church’s life and mission.

As the Church celebrates the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, we honor the holiness and glory of the Blessed Virgin. May she intercede for many young women and men to give themselves in a special way to prayer, asceticism and diligent progress in the spiritual life.

May all of us always be mindful of the need to be in close solidarity with those in the cloistered life, by our spiritual and material support.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
