    Malaysia is ranked the 26th most competitiveeconomy in the world according to the Global

    Competitive Report 2006-2007, released by theWorld Economic Forum. In the recently releasedWorld Bank report entitled Doing Business2007, Malaysia emerged as the 25th mostbusiness-riendly nation in the world out o the 175economies surveyed.

    The Globalisation Index 2006 undertaken by theUS-based Foreign Policy Magazine and A.T.Kearneyhas ranked Malaysia as the worlds 19th mostglobalised country. Kuala Lumpur city is beingrated the least expensive city in the world on ood,electronic goods, clothes, public transport, hotelrates and entertainment or Western visitors, in arecent surveyed on 71 cities worldwide by Swissbanking giant, UBS.

    Easy Steps to Study in Malaysia

    1. The student submits his/her application orm and relevant documents to the intended tuition provider whomust possess ocial approval rom the Ministry o Home Aairs to recruit international students. *

    2. The students application is accepted by the intended tuition provider who will then help to apply or his/her student pass at the Malaysian Immigration Department in Malaysia. **

    3. Upon acceptance, the Malaysian Immigration Department will release a letter o approval or the studentpass to the tuition provider, which will then be given to the student.

    4. Beore leaving his/her country or Malaysia, the student needs to inorm the tuition provider on his/herport o entry (airport), fight number, arrival date and time.

    5. Upon arrival, the student will be met by representatives rom the tuition provider at the check-point and anentry visa will be issued.

    6. Within 2 weeks o the students arrival, the tuition provider will submit his/her passport to the ImmigrationDepartment to ax the Student Pass Sticker.

    * It is important to note that international students are only allowed to study with tuition providers approved by the

    Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    Immigration procedures to enter Malaysia to studyare simple and hassle-ree. The requirements o theImmigration Department or international studentsare as ollows:-

    Conditions to qualiy as a student:a) The student has been accepted or a ull-time

    course o study at a public or privateeducational institution o higher learning.

    b) The student has the nancial means to meet thecourse ees as well as living/travel expenses.

    c) The student possesses good health andcharacter.

    d) The students intention to seek entry is solely orstudy purposes.

    Application Procedures or student passAll applications or student passes by internationalstudents are done through Malaysian educationalinstitutions. The processing approval and issuanceo student passes and visas are done by theImmigration Department in Malaysia except orstudents rom China, who will get their visas romthe Embassy o Malaysia or the Council o Malaysiain China.

    Family members to stay with studentsCertain amily members are allowed to stay on Visit(Social) Passes during the entire duration o thestudents study in Malaysia with approval rom theImmigration Department. They are:1. Parents o the student;2. Spouses, children and parents o students rom

    the Middle East; and3. Spouses and children (immediate amily) o a

    postgraduate student.

    Working part-time while studying in MalaysiaAll international students are allowed to workpart-time with eect rom 15 February 2005. Astudent is only allowed to work or a maximum otwenty hours per week during the semester breaksor holidays o more than seven days, as long ashis or her student pass remains valid, at places oemployment such as restaurants, petrol kiosks, minimarkets and hotels.

    Applications to work part-time must be madethrough the educational institution in which thestudent is studying and he/she needs to be presentduring submission at the Immigration Department.

    Application or a student pass in MalaysiaNext Step

    a) The student has to submit an application orm to study together with relevant documents to the intendededucational institution (Please reer to page 19-21 on which educational institutions to choose).

    b) Once the students application is accepted by the educational institution, the latter will assist the studentin applying or his/her student pass at the Malaysian Immigration Department beore the studentsintended departure to Malaysia. All applications, processing, approval and issuance o the studentpasses and visas or prospective international students are processed in Malaysia except or studentsrom The Peoples Republic o China (PRC). PRC nationals are required to obtain their entry visas romthe Malaysian Embassy in Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai beore entering Malaysia.

    c) Once a letter o approval or the student pass is released by the Malaysian Immigration Department,it will be sent to the students intended educational institution, which has oered him/her a seat to study.The educational institution will in turn send out the letter to the student while he/she remains in his/herhome country.

    d) Beore leaving his/her home country, the student must inorm the intended educational institution ohis/her port o entry (airport), fight number arrival date and time.

    e) Once the student has arrived at the Malaysian airport, he/she will show the student pass approval letterat the immigration checkpoint. Here, a special pass valid or 14 days will be issued to reer the studentto the respective State Immigration Department or the issuance o the student pass. An entry visa- except or PRC nationals - will also be issued then. Representatives rom the educational institutionswill also be at the checkpoint to receive the students and transer them to the educational institutions toreport their attendance.

    ) Within 2 weeks o the students arrival, the educational institution is required to submit the studentspassport to the State immigration Department to enable the student pass to b e axed on the passport.Please check with the State Immigration Department or the ees with regards to student passes andvisas and renewals or both. Please reer to the respective educational institutions with regards to typeso documents and personal bond rates or application o student passes.
