19 (a) State Newton’s law of universal gravitation [2 marks]
Applying Newton’s Law of universal Gravitation explain qualitatively why the force of gravity between two persons close to each other is negligible but the force of gravity of the earth on an object causes the
object to accelerate towards the earth [5 marks]
(b) A communication satellite of mass 60.0 kg in such a way that its orbit is directly above the equator.
It has an angular velocity similar to that of the earth. As a result, the satellite is always at a point above a point on the earth. Calculate
(i) the angular velocity of the satellite in radian per second [2 marks]
(ii) radius of the orbit [2 marks]
(iii) the change in the gravitational potential energy if the satellite which is initially at rest on the
surface of the earth is moved to the orbit in (b) [2 marks]
(iv) If the satellite revolves around another planet in a circular orbit of radius 4.23108 with a period of 1.78 days, find the mass of the planet. [2 marks]
20 (a) The gas molecules in a container at a certain temperature do not have the same speed. Explain.
[3 marks]
(b) State two other assumptions for the kinetic theory of gases. [2 marks]
(c) Kinetic theory of gases predicts the relationship
p =

where P and p are pressure and density of the gas respectively, and is the root mean square speed for the
molecules. Use the relationship to obtain an expression for the average kinetic energy per molecule of the gas
in terms of k: and T where k is the Boltzmann constant and T is the temperature of the gas. [3 marks]
Hence, calculate the total kinetic energy for one mole of hydrogen molecules at temperature 300 K.
[2 marks]
Sketch a graph to show the distribution of molecular speeds for a gas at two different temperatures T 1 and T2
where T2 > T1. Compare the physical characteristics of the two speed distributions by giving reasons for your
answer. [5 marks]
