In late May, 30 students from SK Tanjong Tokong participated in a co-creation activity and learned how to build Coco Husk Raised Beds. Coconut husks were used as building materials for this element as it is a renewable material, durable and easy for children to handle. The Coco Husk Raised Beds were designed and constructed to hold moisture in the soil, something that is required at the Think Green garden as it is really hot and sunny.

The programme also taught various lessons on nature. At one, the Think Green cucumber plants were infested by the 12-Spotted Beetle (Epilachna Indica or Pelombong Daun). This was used as an opportunity to teach the children about pests and how to treat the problem naturally.

The children were thrilled to identify different pests and some collected specimens in their insect bottles while others took a liking to spraying natural Neem pest repellent on the plants.

All are welcome to join the children during their monthly activities. For more info, please email Tharman Anandan at [email protected].

The Think Green Program continues this year, working alongside dedicated students from SK Tanjong Tokong who will keep spirits up with year-long Think Green activities. Every month about 30 students take part in natural farming activities guided by the team from the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP). A series of workshops are also being organised for the students. The first workshop, in conjunction with Earth Day on 19 April 2014 saw the students creating garden beds, kickstart a vegetable garden nursery and carry out garden care activities in teams.

E&O Property volunteers were invaluable in guiding the children on teamwork. The children planted a variety of vegetable seedlings - from chilies to beans, brinjals to okra. After each session the children shared their thoughts on what it meant to work in a community food garden.

Twenty young children from Tadis Ar-Rasyiddin Tanjung Tokong also visit the Think Green garden monthly. Collaborators from CAP organise activities for these kindergarteners to help them appreciate the workings of nature.

It’s Festival Time!Penang is no longer all about food and scenery but festivals. Apart from the renowned month-long George Town Festival that is going to be held for the fifth year running in August 2014, there is also Penang Yosakoi Parade, Penang World Music Festival and one organised by Performing Arts Centre of Penang together with Eastern & Oriental Berhad: the Fringe Festival @ Straits Quay.

The E&O/penangpac Fringe Festival is not a product of conventional or mainstream theatre but a series of small-scale acts that usually occur around or out of a proper theatre. Amongst the famous international fringe festivals are those of Edinburg, Adelaide or New York - that permit artists from around the world to perform a broad variety of works.

This is the second year a local-flavoured fringe festival is presented at Straits Quay to provide a platform for young and enthusiastic performers from all walks of life to showcase their talent in many aspects of the performing arts, regardless of their professional status.

The arts scene is really booming

in Penang. And for the truly

unconventional, there is the

E&O/penangpac Fringe Festival.

Acts from various genres, from classical singing to contemporary dance, were presented from 9-11 May 2014 at different public areas of the mall. Each act was limited to a 15-minute slot and there were no restrictions on style or format. Admission was free. Most of the performers did not charge for their acts and later on busked for donations.

A group of conjurors from Kuala Lumpur impressed the public with their sleight of hands and delighted the young in the crowd. Life Sdn Bhd was an open sharing of true experiences, tales of all living without judgment introduced by Dato’ Faridah Merican in Kuala Lumpur, brought in in a smaller capacity but did not fail to entertain the audience with its music and real stories.

Amongst all other line-ups included workshops of Short+Sweet Festival, poetry reading that has always been unintentionally neglected as an important form of the arts. There were also belly dancers, Japanese Wadaiko drummers, players of musical instruments, to pull the community one step closer to the beauty of performing arts.

If you want to be part of next year’s festival as a performer, drop a note to [email protected] and tell us what you can offer!

A PERANAKAN THEMED LAUncH OF DATUk WOnG cHUn WAI’S bOOk WAS GRAcED by A ROOmFUL OF PEnAnG’S WHO’S WHO.

HistoricallySpeaking

Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, managing director and CEO of The Star recently launched his book, Penang’s History, My Story at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang.

It was no run-of-the-mill launch, as befitting the author, who is no run-of-the-mill author. The 326-page book is a compilation of Datuk Seri’s personal stories written and published in the Metro section of The Star for over a year.

It could not have been held at a more appropriate venue than Sarkies Corner with its Straits Chinese décor. The theme was Peranakan and graceful Nyonyas arrived in the most colourful of kebayas while babas donned their batik shirts. Guests were also treated to a most sumptuous Peranakan buffet of kuih-muih and traditional delights. In between the speeches, the lovely dancers from the Sayang Sayang Nyonya group performed graceful dances to the melodious Peranakan melodies of yesteryear: Jingli Nona and Sapu Tangan.

The guest-of-honour was Datuk Seri’s friend and fellow Penangite, international shoe icon Datuk Jimmy Choo, possibly the most best known son of Penang. Datuk choo shared a few reflections on his childhood in Penang, recalling an era when the Pearl of the Orient was a calm and quiet place.

Proceeds from the sale of the books will go to Penang Heritage Trust and the Kenosis Home. In support of the fundraising efforts, E&O Berhad purchased 500 copies of the newly launched book, which will in turn be donated to public and school libraries.

Penang’s History, My Story is available at The Bombay Shop, E&O Hotel and at major bookstores nationwide.

From left: Theeban, Saras and Subbarow

It is no secret that theConsumers Association of Penang’sHQ is located along Jalan Masjid Negeri. But did you know that it has a secretgarden on the same premises?

One sunny afternoon, Watercolours paid a visit to cAP to check out its Urban Garden. Approaching the bungalow where CAP is housed, all we can see is its entrance, flanked by some benches and lots of greenery. There was no hint of any sizable garden.

Led by Tharman Anandan, E&O’s Assistant Manager, Community Relations, we walked round acorner of the building and voila! A big garden withpotted plants, trellises and potting sheds. We metn. V. Subbarow, cAP’s Education Officer and two members of his team, Theeban Gunasekaran and Saras Odian who showed us round the half-acre garden and its many wondrous secrets.

Long an advocate of natural farming without the use of harmful fertilisers and pesticides, Subbarow and his team has to research, experiment, practise and finetune these natural alternatives before they share their findings with farmers, vegetable and home gardeners.

It all began ten years ago after a visit by Dr Sultan Ahmed Ismail, India’s vermitech pioneer and organic farming expert. He suggested that CAP set up a vermicomposting and natural farming centre. Hence Subba and his team got the idea of transforming the car park at cAP’s office into an Urban Garden.

For a painstaking two years, the dedicated team cleared the area: digging up the tarmac and created their own soil layer by layer. They did this by mulching nine types of millet and spices, grass, manure, introducing worms and Pancakavya (a growth promoter and pest repellent).

Today, the garden is a marvelous sight to behold. There are some 30 types of vegetables in the Urban Garden (we saw cucumber, sawi, bittergourd, ladies finger, chili), 30 to 40 kinds of herbs, fruit trees (banana, soursop, papaya, rambutan, passionfruit, umla) and a four-tank vermicomposting system.

many of the herbs we find in Penang’s delicious street food can be found here: mint, curry leaves, ginger flower, pandan leaves, spring onion and chives.

The Urban Garden is open to the public on some Saturdays each month. Training is shared with farmers, urban gardeners, homemakers and students. Basically, Saras explained, the information shared is more or less the same but Subba’s group will tailor it to suit the requirements or the technical capability of the groups. Major components are natural farming, dangers of pesticides, pest control, use of growth promoters and natural pesticides.

A visit is most worthwhile as it will inspire you to start growing something, even if you are an apartment dweller. There are many examples of how some plants can happily and healthily live in repurposed PET bottles and coconut shells in addition to the more usual clay pots.

For more info on CAP please log on towww.consumer.org.my. For visits to the Urban Garden, please call Subba at 04 829 9511.

STRAITS QUAY HOLIDAY

The predominantly Chinese town consisted of shophouses laid out in a grid formation. At one end of the town were the british officers’ quarters, the military cantonment and the gaol. At the other end was the Indian settlement at Kota.

Taiping’s reputation as a salubrious town was enhanced by its cool weather, the excellent water supply and the nearby highlands. Maxwell Hill (now called Bukit Larut) was made a hill resort for the British officers.

While Taiping’s early development was guided by Sir Hugh Low as Resident of Perak (1877-1899), it was during Frank Swettenham’s term as Acting Resident (1884-1886) when many existing institutions such as the market, the post and telegraph office, the Assistant Resident’s house, the audit and treasury offices and the police offices were rebuilt and expanded.

In 1885, the controversial 8-mile railway line from Taiping to Port Weld was completed. It was the first railway in the Peninsula, and two contingents of the Ceylon Pioneer Corps were seconded by the colonial government of Ceylon for the project.

As clubs and schools flourished, Taiping led in sports. Personalities such as Frank Swettenham and Colonel Walker played cricket regularly at the Esplanade field.

Taiping’s importance was briefly resumed during the period of Japanese Occupation, when it became the headquarters of the Japanese military administration of Malaya and Sumatra. Many of Taiping’s school buildings were turned into army bases. After the war, Ipoh replaced Taiping as the capital of Perak by an administrative order.

Taiping, a town of many firsts, is today one of Perak’s foremost historic attractions. Its built environment, consisting of colonial buildings, public gardens, picturesque roadside trees and shophouses, tells the story of its development from 1874 to the present.

This remarkable heritage, together with the town’s exceptional climate and tranquil surroundings, continues to earn Taiping its reputation as a town of everlasting peace and is definitely one of the recommended places to visit.

Various Taiping tours are available at Straits Quay’s Tourist Centre. For more information, kindly contact04 890 7729 or email [email protected].

As a popular tourist attraction, Straits Quay Retail Marina offers lots of attractions for visitors to Malaysia, including a comprehensive tourist centre. The Centre offers new travel packages every other month with the latest offering being Taiping’s heritage and scenic beauty.

The town of Taiping was born out of the Larut wars, fought against the background of tin mines in the State of Perak. Eventually, the feuds between rival miners quietened down with the intervention of British soldiers, headed by a Captain Speedy and his soldiers.

Speedy became the Assistant Resident, stationed at Larut. He planned for the establishment of two towns, one called Taiping, for the Hakka Chinese, and another called Kamunting, for the rival group. It was Speedy who gave Taiping its name, being the Chinese words for ‘Everlasting Peace’, regarded as a lucky omen for its future.

With new-found peace, miners and shopkeepers flocked to Taiping, and within a year there were 5,000 inhabitants. Larut’s development was fuelled

by revenue from tin duties. A four-mile road joining Taiping and Kamunting was one of the many roads that were built. Situated on a flat plain, from which the Gunung Hijau range rose abruptly to a height of over 5,000 feet, and only 13 miles from the coast, Taiping’s location was strategic.

By 1877, the seat of Perak’s administration was moved from Lower Perak to kuala kangsar in Upper Perak, just south of Taiping. Several important institutions were established including a hospital, a gaol and the survey office.
