PRESS RELEASEKAWAMATA CARTON WORKSHOP10 APRIL - 23 AUGUST 2010GALERIE DES ENFANTS / FORUM / MEZZANINE
From 10 April until August 23 2010, Tadashi Kawamata is undertakingan exceptional intervention at the Centre Pompidou and in the Galerie
des enfants.
Through the acts of sculptor and architect that characterise his approach,
the Japanese artist intervenes in environments and buildings utilising basic
materials such as cardboard and yard lumber, which become elements
of an immense assemblage.
Based on his analysis of the architecture of the Centre Pompidou and the way
it fits into the surrounding urban fabric, the artist has imagined a spacecovered in cardboard for the Galerie des enfants. Like most of his projects,
it is a work in progress. The project, begun by the students and teams
of the Centre Pompidou, will be completed by visiting parents and children
following the rules the artist has conceived for the game. Kawamata proposes
the unifying thread of nature and the city to frame the activities space
in the Galerie des enfants in six consecutive chapters: from the mountain
to the Tower of Babal, by way of the landscape of the maze. The exhibition/
workshop in the Galerie des enfants also proposes six cabinet projects
designed by the artist, each of which houses the documents that describe
his previous creations. Inside these cabinets, among other objects and
documents, one can view the documentary films made by Gilles Coudert,

who has been filming the artists work for many years.
For the first time, Tadashi Kawamata is also intervening on the faade and in the Forum
of the Centre Pompidou. He has nestled his wood huts in the buildings metallic and
technical framework. These little ephemeral constructions invite us to see the building
and its environment in a fresh and amazed way. They offer a new and unusual reading
of the building that encourages us to rediscover the architecture of the Centre Pompidou.

3. EXHIBITION ITINERARY AND MAP
A - ACTIVITIES SPACE
Every month, Tadashi Kawamata recreates a thematic staging with students and children.
Month by month, the changes to the decor of the Galerie des enfants will lead families from a craggymountain landscape in cardboard to a Tower of Babel. Each step will be filmed and projected onto oneof the walls of the exhibition space. Through these workshops, a young public is offered the opportunityto work with the same materials as the sculptor, to further develop his proposals, and thus to questionnotions of nature, architecture, urbanism and society.
