Have you ever been annoyed by one of those squiggly

    looking words that

    your computer

    asks you to identify

    before it lets

    you

send an email? This is a C PTCH - a

    word designed to

    be

easily recognisable for a human but

impossible for a computer. It prevents hackers from using

software programmes to set up hundreds of accounts

    automatically. C PTCH is

    an

    acronym

    ror Completely

Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and

    Humans Apart .

3 The objective of CAPTCHA is to

    A send

    emails

    B recognise humans

    C

    stop unauthorised users

    D identify

    programme hackers

    EMPATHY SKILLS

    Somehow I think I have

    the

    gift

    of

reading people well. When they speak, I

    can read between the lines

    or

even understand the deeper meanings of

    their message. Even

    if they

do not speak those words, I can intuitively feel

    wh t

they have inside them. Despite having this so called gift , I do not go

further than this and I leave matters as how they are.

    4 The phrase re d

    etween

the lines in the above text means the person

    A reads the lines well

    B can read people's mind

    C can

    detect what

    people

    The following passage

    is

    about

    th

    writer

    ·s

    childhood memories with a Malay

    frien

    I often think about

    my

childhood friend, IsmaiL Back in the early 60$, our families

    liv

    ed

    a sto

    ne

    s throw

    from

    each other on the outskirts

    of Kua la

    Lumpur, surrounded

    by

    a

    vast

    expanse

    of

    rubber

    an

    d o

    il palm

    trees. Ismail's father was

    the

    plantation

    lorry

    driver

and Ismail was the eldest of five children. No-one was bothered that Ismail

    Wlls

    a Malay

    Muslim and

    we

    were Indian Hindus.

    We

    just accepted our differences.

    2

    We must

    have been nine when

    we

    became friends. Ismail,

    my

    elder brother Jothi

    and

    I would watch with fascination

    as

    his father busied himself

    in

    his

    workshop. Ismail 's

    father. a genial bear

    of a

    man. was a handyman

    of

    sorts. n ~ he converted

    a

    huge

cylindrical glass container into an aquarium.

    We

    were thrilled

    wh

    enever

    we

    had the

    chance to help

    him

    with

    hi

    s tools.

    10

3 In time, the three ofus built a den from discarded zinc sheets and old wooden planks

    not

    far from

our homes. Here, we spent many a su ltry afternoon, away

    from my youn

    ger

    sister

    Premo,

    a curious seven-year-old

    wh

o constantly wondered what her secretive

    brothers were

    up

    to.

    We

would enjoy the sugarcane and guavas that Isma

    il

    brought from

his garden. We would provide the tapioca. kitchen utens

    il

s and salt. all surreptitiously 15

taken from our home. Mom was suspicious at times but she never made a fuss over her

'missing' utensils. After wa shing the tapioca using water from a nearby stream, we then

    sliced

    it

into thin half-moon discs, sprinkled on a little salt and deep fried them

    in

    the

    wok

    over an

    open fire. That

    was how we mad

    e o

    ur

    own tapioca

    chips.

    I have never

    ta

    st

    ed

    better ones. 20

4 During the school holidays, we would explo

    re

    the countryside on our

    bi

    cycles,

hoping to come across the unexpected. Going

    zi

pping past the cliffs with a sheer ravine

falling away on the other side of the path was exhilarating Stopping to catch our breath.

    we would

    watch

    the flash qfcolour

    as a

kingfisher flew by. These experiences filled us

    with

    a

    sense

    of

    adventure

    and awe. 25

    5 Perhaps because

    he

was the oldest child, Ismail acted responsibly and was seldom

    em otio

    naL He had

    a steady

    hand

and was quick to help. On ce, he deft ly rem

    oved

    a

    th

    orn

that had pierced my foot while we were swimming

    in

    a stream.

6 Occasionally, during the weekends, Jothi and I would go to Ismail's house. His

younger sisters minded baby Udin, as their mother, a petite woman in a sarong, smiled 30

and busied herself in the small kitchen. I remember once she stewed a chunk

    of

    beef

while th e children peered into the pot and murmured "delicious··. Ju st like my family,

    they rarely had meat.

    At

    times Is

    mail

would accompany our famil y as we made a

    rare

    shopping trip

    to

    town.

    We

    wo

    u

    ld be

    glad of his compan

    y. Th

    e shy smile on

    hi

    s face

    spoke a thousand words. 35

7 I must have been about twelve

    or

thirteen when my father was transferred to Johor.

The years passed and memories of my childhood days grew hazy. One dismal afternoon

in mid 1983, I stopped a taxi in Kuala Lumpur

    and

got in just as the skies opened up. I

stated my destination and prayed that I wouldn't be late for

    my job

    interview. There was

    a recession and

    jo

bs were scarce. The driver, a small, neatly dressed man, acknowledged 40

my instructions but did not move off. Instead, he looked intently at me through his

mirror. ·'Raddar? he said. using my childhood nickname. Imagine

    my

    astonishment

    at

    being :;o

    familiarly addressed. When the driver

    tumed around,

    I had

    a

    better view

    of

    his

    face. There

    wa

s no mistaking that shy smile - it was Ismail Even after two decades

    we

    sti

    ll

    recognised each other.

    5

8 As I grasped his should

    er

    over the

    fr

ont seat, I felt a genuine affection, something

hard to describe. He patted my hand and said "I haven't seen

    you in a while, friend.

We chatted as he drove. Ismail

    's

parents were well. His sisters were married and so was

he. His work as a taxi driver was temporary. He would soon

    be

    head ing to Pahang to

    work. So

    me

one once said: ' 'friendship - pure, un selfish friendship -

    nunures,

    5

strengthens and lengthens a relationship.' '
