AbstrakThe objectives of this study are to describe the extent of student’s speakingability that can be enhanced through the use of “High Town” Card Game as alearning medium and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of using “HighTown” Card as a learning medium in teaching speaking to the seventh gradestudents of SMP Negeri 2 Sumbang in the academic year of 2010/2011.A three cycle classroom action research approach was adopted with fouractivities in each cycle, namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Thepopulation of the study was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sumbangin the academic year 2010/2011. The methods used in collecting the data werestudents’ test, students’ observation checklist, and questionnaire.The result of the students’ progress during the teaching learning processby using “High Town” Card was very good. The mean of students’ achievementincreased from the first meeting to the last meeting. It could be seen from theaverage score, i.e. 1.26 points in pre-test and 3.18 points in post-test 3. The scoreimproved by 1.92 points. It means that the use of “High Town” Card Game waseffective in teaching speaking by considering the implementation of group work,free speaking activity and games.From the analysis of the use of “High Town” Card Game in developingthe students’ speaking ability, some advantages are identified, i.e.: it makesspeaking lesson more enjoyable, it teaches the students how to ask and giveinformation to their friends, it can reduce the students’ nervousness to speakEnglish, and the material of “High Town” Card is not only for introducing ordescribing someone. However, there were some disadvantages, namely theteacher needs more time and activity for creating the contents of the cards, and theactivity demands teacher’s skill in controlling the class.“High Town” Card Game can be used by the teacher as an alternativemedium in teaching speaking. Based on the result, the use of “High Town” CardGame could be said as one of the effective media in developing the students’speaking ability.
