B. OBJEKTIF KURSUSThis course equips students with the methods and approaches and also the underlying principles on materials selection and adaptation in relation to the teaching of English as a second language. Students will be guided to select, adapt as well as produce appropriate and relevant materials suited to the different levels of proficiency in the ESL classroom.

LEARNING OUTCOMESAt the end of the course, students will be able to:1. Apply methods, approaches and principles in relation to materials development and adaptations.

(C4) 2. Produce teaching and learning materials for the different language skills which are appropriate and

relevant to their learners’ needs. (P4) 3.Evaluate commercialized materials and decide how to utilize them to enhance the quality and

There will be 5 quizzes, assignments, etc throughout the semester. These activities will be based on the topic in the modules that students need to read every week. It is COMPULSORY for students to do the activities on line.

2. In class Quiz (10%)This 30 minutes In-class Quiz will familiarize students with the format of the final exam questions. This is an open book quiz, students may bring and refer to their notes during the Quiz.

3. Assignment 1 (15%)Develop Story for primary school children: For this assignment students work in groups of 2 – 3 people to produce a comic like story, based

on Malaysian Folklore - example: Sang Kancil, Pak Pandir etc. The characters communicate using bubbles. But since you are also telling a story you must add a small column where you write the story a little.

Please give its source and do not copy directly from existing story books. The length of this assignment is NOT less than 10 pages. Students are reminded to NOT copy readily available materials in the market. Plagiarism will be

given an F grade. An example is given below:

They were so bored eating the same food day after day that one ant suggested going to another place.

One day, an army of ants was at a park eating food in a picnic basket.

4. Assignment 2 (15%)Grammar module: In groups of 2 – 3 people, students develop a teaching and learning module to teach grammar to

primary school pupils. The length of this assignment is 10 – 12 pages depending on the topics. You must include teaching notes, exercises for the pupils. Include references. With the agreement of the Lecturer in charge of your centre, only choose 1 topic from the list of

topics listed in the Instructional Planning. The level of proficiency is intermediate learners.
