5,600 m2
1,550 nos. of SC
Project site
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Lebuhraya Pantai Timur Phase 2, (LPT2)
expressway is an extension of Lebuhraya Pantai
Timur (LPT1), Phase 1 (Karak to Jabur). Both of
this expressways are an extension of Kuala
Lumpur – Karak expressway. The length of this
LPT2 is 184 km beginning at Jabur until Kuala
Terengganu.
The proposed area for ground improvement
works is at Package 5A: Ch 55 800 to Ch 56000.
The exhibited design from Consultant is using
stone column works. Menard was invited to
optimise the design based on additional SI test
carried out at project site.
SOIL CONDITION / GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEM
Project soil profile:
A total of 3 nos. of pre-treatment cone
penetration test (CPT) was conducted to confirm
the existing ground condition. The subsoil
consisted in 8m thick soft silty clay (qc= 0.3
MPa). This site can be categorised as a former
valley with a soft layer at its bottom. The
embankment fill was 15.5m height. Ground
water level was found at existing ground level.
Existing site condition
Project specifications:
Stone column was designed to achieve
performance criteria according to JKR
requirements:-
• Total post settlement shall not exceed
than 40 cm
• 5 years total post settlement shall not
exceed 25 cm, following the opening
highway for public use
• Max. differential settlement 1:750
• Short and long term FOS for stability
shall remain higher than 1.25 and 1.5
respectively
MENARD SOLUTION
Optimization of cost saving was an
important criterion in this project, while
achieving all criteria stated by JKR.
The additional pre-CPT tests allowed to
better defined the Site conditions and
allowed to refine the spacing and length of
the SC. The resulting cost saving was in
the range of RM330,000.
SC works progress

2007 and completed in May 2008 (5
months production period).
