Reactions 482 - 18 Dec 1993 Merbromin overdose Adverse effects in a child after oral ingestion: case report Seventeen hours after swallowing 20ml of merbromin [mercurochrome] 2% solution, a 15-year-old girl presented with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dizziness. Urine samples over 8 hours showed a mercury level of 1.8 µmol/L (normal 0.05 µmol/L). The patient was discharged early. Two days after ingestion her mercury level was 412 nmol/L. Author comment: Reference sources suggest that merbromin is poorly absorbed orally. But this case indicates that ‘substantial absorption can take place via the oral route and caution is needed when "mouthful" quantities have been swallowed by young children.’ Magarey JA.
