INTRODUCTION TOCOMPUTER PERIPHERALS

A computer peripheral is anyexternal device that providesinput and output for thecomputer. For example, akeyboard and mouse are inputperipherals, while a monitor andprinter are output peripherals.Computer peripherals, orperipheral devices, aresometimes called "I/O devices"because they provide input andoutput for the computer. Someperipherals, such as externalhard drives, provide both inputand output for the computer.

The most common way to installa printer is to connect it directlyto your computer. This is knownas a local printer.

If your printer is a universal serialbus (USB) model, Windowsshould automatically detect it andbegin installation when you plugit in.

If you're installing a wirelessprinter that connects to yourcomputer over a wireless

network (Wi-Fi), you can use theAdd a device wizard to install theprinter. For instructions, seeConnect to Bluetooth and otherwireless or network devices.

If it's an older model thatconnects using the serial orparallel port, you might have toinstall it manually.

There are two basic ways tomake a printer available to thecomputers on your homenetwork:

Attach it directly to onecomputer and share it withall the others on anetwork.

Connect the printer as astand-alone device on thenetwork itself.

process.

If you've already set up a

homegroup and want to access ashared printer from anotherhomegroup computer, just followthese steps:

1. On the computer the printer isphysically connected to, click

the Start button , andthen click Control Panel. Inthe search box, typehomegroup, and then clickHomeGroup.

2. Make sure the Printers checkbox is selected. (If not, selectit, and then click Savechanges.)

3. Go to the computer you wantto print from.

Wired printers have anEthernet port, which youconnect to your router orhub via an Ethernet cable.

Wireless printers typically

To install a network, Wi-Fi, orBluetooth printer

1. Open Devices andPrinters by clicking the

Start button , andthen, on the Start menu,clicking Devices andPrinters.

2. Click Add a printer.3. In the Add Printer wizard,

click Add a network,wireless or Bluetoothprinter.

4. In the list of availableprinters, select the oneyou want to use, and thenclick Next.

5. If prompted, install theprinter driver on yourcomputer by clicking

Install driver. If you'reprompted for anadministrator password orconfirmation, type thepassword or provideconfirmation.

6. Complete the additionalsteps in the wizard, andthen click Finish
