Construction is by far the oldest and most important of human activities.
It springs from the material needs of the individual and society, but in satisfying people’s needs it broadens to express their most spontaneous and deep feelings.
Construction gathers in a unique synthesis the elements of manual labor, industrial organization, scientific theory, aesthetic sensibility, and great economic interest.
Construction creates our physical environment, and thus exercises a silent but deep educational influence on each one of us.
Mario SalvadoriMario Salvadori
A knowledge of structures on the part of the architect is, to say the least, highly desirable, and that correctness of structure cannot but add to the beauty of architecture.
Two men are essential in the construction of any important building: the architect and civil engineer.
Today, no architect would dare design a building of even modest size without consulting a structural engineer.
The roots of those dependence are to be found in the increasing importance of economic factors, in the technological direction of our culture, and above all, in our mass civilization’s need for large structures.
Overall ThinkingOverall Thinking
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Concerned with provision of physical integrity, strength, and efficiency
Works with technological properties of structure: energy, materials, construction know how
To implement building design/ construction
Concerned with provision for all spatial and technical performance needs
Works with space form properties of all subsystems: activity, associated, physical and symbolic
To interact all subsystems as a total environmental design
DESIGNER (ARCHITECT)
Overall design thinking produces
TOTAL ARCHITECTURE
