Section B: Question 16-25 Read the letter by Janice to her mother on what she did in Jefri anak Ngilek’s house during Gawai Festival in Sarawak.

Dear Mom,

How are you? I hope you are fine. How is my cat? I bet you have a tough time taking care of it. Does my pet cat still dig a pit in your garden bed? Mom, don’t let it play in the kitchen. Remember, last Sunday, it broke ten plates. Does it still sit on your sofa set? What a naughty pet.

Today is my third day in Kuching, Sarawak. I am really enjoying myself here with my friend, Jefri. Jefri took me to a longhouse near Kuching to see how the Dayaks celebrate the Gawai Festival. Gawai festival is an important annual festival celebrated in the state of Sarawak.

The first thing I saw was the offering of many kind of food-stuff to the God of Rice and Prosperity. Then, a man recited a poem specially meant for the occasion. Finally, the people in the longhouse, including me, gathered around a ceremonial tree. It was at the common verandah at the longhouse. It was really fun and we enjoyed ourselves singing, dancing and eating.

During Gawai, everybody wore their traditional costumes. Many of the things I saw were strange to me. I learned a lot about the Gawai festival. I shall tell you more about it when I return home.
