BIG Reflection

As for our Bina Insan Guru semester 5, we need to go to a school to gather

information about the school and also carry out some activities with the students.

Most of us suggested that we should go to a different state to visit to the school. This

is because most of the time we have been doing our BIG in Penang and this is the

time for us to go to other states and visit different school to get a better exposure of

different school environment. However, when the date of BIG came near, we

realised that the week was very hectic for us as we need to submit many

assignments. However, it was too late to change the venue and date of the BIG. Ourleader of this BIG programme have already sent the letter to SK Puteri Asma to ask

for permission to visit the school and also got the permission so we had no choice

but to keep to the initial plan.

On the day of the BIG, all of us gathered at Gelanggara at 6.30 a.m. After a

while we left on a bus for our destination. We stop at our destination for about 30

minutes to have our breakfast. After that we continued our journey to the school in

Kedah. It took us about an hour to reach there. I was excited as for the first time we

are going to another state for our Big. When we reached the school, we were warmly

greeted by the teachers at the entrance. After that, we were briefed by the head of

students Affair. She presented everything about the school including the history. I

was amazed to know that the school have a lot of achievements. This school have a

strong pianika band where the students will always win whatever competition they

go to. Besides that their tunas budaya group also is one of the strongest group with a

lot of achievements. I find this school very interesting because this school has a verygood relationship with different institutions in and out of the country. I knew many

schools but this is the only school I encountered with that has got a good relationship

with institutions from other countries as well. Some of the institute in the country that

have a good relationship with SK Sulatanah ASma are Jabatan Kesenian

Kebudayaan Negeri Kedah(2013), Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia(2013),

Universiti Utara Malaysia(2013) and many more; this include some of the Institut

Pendidikan Guru including ourvery own IPG Penang Campus. Institute from othercountries are KOBE in Japan, Yamaha Music Centre (2012), Nanjing Youfi Xijie

Primary School in China, and most of the other institutes are from Thailand, which is

the closest to the state. I find this interesting because to deal with other institution is

not easy especially the one from other countries. Therefore I believe that the school

committee members are very active and also very hardworking in order to create a

good and harmonious relationship with both inside and outside the country.

Besides, I also think that the school is very special. SK Sulatanah Asma is

special in a way that every year during Hari Anugerah Kecermelangan, one of the

royalties family members will be invited to present the award to the students. If the

royalty family cant attend the event, one person from the PPD will attend. For last

year, the Deputy Education of Kedah will be attending the event. It is very rare to see

VIP attending a ceremony in schools like this every year. According to the PK HEM,

Datin Rohana, she said that the VIP will attend functions to this is school is because

in the early 1950s, the Queen of Kedah had did the opening ceremony and the

school is named after her; this is the reason why the royalty family often attend the

ceremony in the school to show respect.

I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to visit this school which is entitledas Sekolah Prestasi Tinggi as Ive gone to few normal schools for my SBE but this

was my first time to this type of school. After going there, I realised the difference

between a normal school and Sekolah Prestasi Tinggi. SPT is good in almost any

activities they indulge in. They are good both in education and sports. However, I

also realised that the workload for teachers of SPT in higher as they have a high

responsibility in maintaining the good name of the school. After benchmarking the

school, we had some time to do activities with the pupils in the school. We were

divided in groups to conduct the activity. I think that I had improved a lot since the

first day I came here. I feel that I am very much more confident handling the pupils;

my voice is loud enough and also my instructions were clear. Our group conducted

pandora box and also Simon says. I couldsee that the pupils were enjoying the

activities done by us. It was easy to handle the pupils because they have a very

good discipline. Again, as told by the PK HEM, the school is very particular when it

comes to discipline. Therefore it was easy for me to handle them but the only thing is

that their English proficiency is not that good. Some of the pupils had difficulties to

understand t the language.

The teachers were friendly because they actually greeted us although we

were just students. It shows that even the teachers believe in discipline and

respecting one another. The PK HEM, Datin Rohana was the one that presented all

the information about the school to us. She was very kind in the sense that she

shared many of her experiences to us; besides she also advise us to be good

teachers in future as we are the one going to educate the future generation.

After benchmarking the school, we had some time to do activities with the

pupils in the school. We were divided in groups to conduct the activity. I think that I

had improved since the first day I came here due to the experience I have when

conducting microteaching and also presentation. However I feel there is a lot of room

for improvement as i could do better in the future. I feel that my confidence level

have increase in handling the pupils and my voice is loud enough and I tried to make

my instructions short and simple. Our group conducted pandora box and also

Simon says. I could see that the pupils were enjoying the activities done by us. It

was easy to handle the pupils because they have a very good discipline. Again, as

told by the PK HEM, the school is very particular when it comes to discipline.

Therefore it was easy for me to handle them but the only thing is that their English

proficiency is not that good. Some of the pupils had difficulties to understand t the

language.

However I found our activity a bit dull as it was lack of preparation. We could have

made it more interesting which could attract the pupils to participate more. However I

feel my group members and I tried our best to conduct the activity in an interesting

manner. I will make sure next time we prepare more before carrying out any activity.

I also feel that most of us did not have much role to play in this BIG as we were told

one day earlier to come out with activities. I feel our organization of BIG and the duty

can be equally distributed as everyone will have a more important role to play.

Overall I would say that the trip to the school was very good as i learn new

knowledge and had a wonderful experience. All this is preparing me to be a teacher

in future. I have the exposure of hoe normal schools are and SPT schools are like.I

really hope all this experience of us conducting activities will help me and my friend

in arrying out our lesson during practicum soon.
