Bersama-sama projek ini, akan berlangsung ceramah bertajuk Stories, Humanity and What About The Arts dengan beberapa penceramah antarabangsa, termasuk Larry Harvey dari Burning Man Festival.

With a two-day mega showcase to kick-start the festival, walking giants, site-specific performances and more, George Town Festival returns to excite like never before! KUALA LUMPUR, 16 May 2016: Turning a saucy seven this year, George Town Festival is once again set to dazzle audiences with various scintillating performances and exhibitions at exciting locations in and around the heart of the city. Highlighting at the festival this year are some of the best talents from Australia and around Southeast Asia in a mega two-day event to be held at the Esplanade. Aptly named the A+SEAN Showcase, this outdoor event is sure to draw crowds as giant PVC installations, or Strandbeests as their creator Theo Jansen likes to call them, roam the field propelled only by wind. Videos of these mammoth machines ambling on Dutch beaches have raked up millions of views online and now is your chance to see the magic in person. What’s more, they won’t be the only giants there as the Esplanade will also play host to the Snuff Puppets from Australia - gigantic hand-made installations that are sure to enthral children and adults alike! For those who enjoy a live performance or two, some of the most popular bands from both Malaysia and around the region will be belting out their hits. These include Nidji, whose singles have been used as Manchester United’s anthem in 2013, as well as the background score in the Southeast Asian promo for the highly popular television series Heroes. Also performing will be Malaysian favourites OAG and Ocean of Fire, as well as singers Dasha Logan and Bihzhu. There will also be plenty of action on the side with a chance to indulge in some good old-fashioned retail therapy at a lifestyle market featuring the best of art, books and fashion from around the region, delicious food in mobile stalls and more exciting acts. On the same weekend, Svara Bhumi will be filling the hall in Dewan Sri Pinang with indigenous music. The event will feature acts like Australia’s leading aboriginal band ‘The Black Arm Band’, Ria Hall from New Zealand, and others from Indonesia and Malaysia. This concert will officiate the opening of this year’s festival as a tribute to indigenous music from the region. Other festival highlights include a GTF-commissioned show – Pearl of the Eastern & Oriental – by Lim Yu Beng and Tan Kheng Hua, the team that brought 2 Houses in GTF 2014; a site-specific programme – Moved by Padi – by our home-grown choreographer and dancer Aida Redza; the Asian premiere of Triptyque by Les 7 doigts de la main; Southeast Asian premieres - Kaash by Akram Khan Company, Missing by Gecko Theatre and Smashed by Gandini Juggling. Joining us at the festival will be the committee members of FACP (Federation for Asian Cultural Promotion) from all over Asia. FACP holds an annual conference hosted by a different Asian city each year and Penang was selected to host the 34th Annual Conference. The conference aims to provide a platform for arts and artist managers, cultural entrepreneurs and leaders to facilitate international touring and discussion of issues that the art industry faces. The festival has always worked on giving back to the community and one such initiative has been to provide community tickets and organise fund-raising projects. This year, such efforts will be formalised with the Arts For Humanity project. We hope to crowdfund more community tickets and raise funds for educational workshops and artistic grants. Together with this project, there will be a talk titled Stories, Humanity and What About The Arts? with several international speakers, including Larry Harvey from the Burning Man Festival. Once again, we are working on securing partners and sponsors for this year’s festival and highly encourage interested parties to get in touch with us. For more information, as well as tickets for our programmes, visit our website www.georgetownfestival.com.

We spent the first few years building a brand for GTF to put it on the world map of festivals. Since 2014, we have focused on giving the community accessibility to the arts, offering world-class shows at affordable prices and keeping a majority of the events free. This year, we pick up this momentum and take on a bigger role and responsibility as we embark on more initiatives for the people under our newly launched ARTS FOR HUMANITY project.- Joe Sidek, Festival Director

OUR gOALs In 2016, GTF launches its multi-level efforts to contribute to the community through

- Community Tickets- Educational Workshops- Grants for Art Projects

This will be continued in the future with:

- AB+C Programmes- Educational Grants- Setting up of A Resource Centre

OUR MissiOnWe believe that arts should be accessible to the community irrespective of economic, racial and social divisions. The mission for Arts For Humanity would be to help bridge the gap, providing

- An accessible platform to the arts for all - A platform through which artists and practitioners in the creative industry can showcase their work- A connection between educational experts, aspiring artists and practitioners of arts

The Arts for Humanity project will kick off with a series of talks featuring renowned figures in the art world, including Burning Man festival co-founder Larry Harvey and Cambodian film director Rithy Panh (to be confirmed). They will share their personal artistic journeys and speak about the ways in which stories impact a society and consequently, the world.

“The Black Arm Band reminds me of the long struggle and the long journey we’ve been on. Thirty years ago, we were marching for justice down the city streets, but now we’re telling our stories in the concert halls.” - Archie Roach

As the official opening act of GTF this year, Svara Bhumi (Songs of the Earth) will feature one of Australia’s leading aboriginal bands, the Black Arm Band, as well as other indigenous bands from New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia as a tribute to music from the region.

Led by a strategic team of Australia’s foremost indigenous artists, the Black Arm Band’s musical tradition and presentation has been forged from over 40,000 years of living with culture, and infused with contemporary styles that have been adopted by Australian Aboriginals. The Black Arm Band’s programmes include national and international touring, educational outreach and workshops as well as remote community engagement.

Award-winning physical dance theatre company Gecko presents Missing through a series of extraordinary images, jaw-dropping choreography and a tantalising multilingual vocal landscape. Since its premier in 2012, Missing has garnered international acclaim as it continues to tour around the world to tell the tale of Lily as she revisits her past, urging the audience to consider their origins and how far they have strayed from who they are.

All That Fall is a multi-layered composition of voices that can be experienced as a black comedy, a murder mystery, a cryptic literary riddle or a quasi-musical score. Set in a uniquely atmospheric, theatrically-tuned listening chamber, Pan Pan Theatre’s creative experimentation is sure to command attention from start to finish.

The traditional art of Potehi used to be performed for gods in temples, but is now finding new relevance with contemporary audiences. This year, George Town Festival is bringing in traditional troupes from Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan - the Taiwanese one having put on 300 performances a year and played in major venues such as London’s Festival Hall - where the puppets are once again set to bring stories to life.

As the oldest, most outstanding and influential Flamenco-Andalusí group, Chekara brings the group’s second project Tan cerca, tan lejos (So near, so far) to Asia for the first time at George Town Festival. Produced with Estrella Morente, who has been described as “flamenco royalty” and is the voice behind Penélope Cruz’s flamenco song in Volver, this project pays homage to the famous flamenco figure Enrique Morente.

Moved by Padi is a multi-arts collaborative project led by Malaysia’s leading choreographer and dancer Aida Redza. With rice being a staple in Asia, Moved by Padi (Malay for ‘paddy’) is fundamentally rooted in the belief that what one consumes becomes the flesh, blood and soul of what we are, of ourselves.

Together with her artistic collaborators, Ombak-Ombak ArtStudio, Ng Chor Guan (composer), Sarah Ameera (visual artist), Lisa Foo (installation artist) and Mao Arata (Japanese choreographer and performer), they will present a contemporary reinvention of rituals and communal celebrations honouring the semangat (spirit) of paddy and rice as a source of existence and self.

After performing at the 2012 Academy Awards Ceremony and directing the first segment of the Opening Ceremony at the Sochi Olympic games, Canadian-based Les 7 doigts de la main brings the Asian premiere of Triptyque to George Town Festival. The mesmerising three-part show is an ingenious spectacle in which circus acrobatics meet contemporary dance.

Triptyque is a collaboration between three of the world’s most well-known choreographers - Marie Chouinard, Victor Quijada and Marcos Morau. The show is directed by Samuel Tétreault, co-founder and co-Artistic Director of Les 7 doigts de la main, who also performs in all three pieces. The result of this collaboration pushes boundaries towards the undefinable, uncategorisable, visceral, breathtaking and touchingly human.

After performing over 5000 shows in 50 countries, the world-renowned jugglers of Gandini Juggling present Smashed, a sensational mix of circus and theatre. This hour-long spectacle explores the dark art of juggling in a series of nostalgic filmic scenes that traverse tense relationships, lost love and afternoon tea in a way that is funny and inventive.

“This is a show in which the tensions between mind and body, concentration and distraction, surface blandness and hidden emotion, mathematical patterns and chaos often threaten to explode, and do in a finale of smashed cockery, which is as terrifyingly vicious as it is funny.” - The Guardian
