Village Visit
Traditional Indonesian village life depends on wild rainforest plants and those cultivated ingardens near the village. Use the following directions and your double page drawing of avillage scene to get to know some of the plants used in traditional daily village life.
Finding the PlantsTo find the plants from the Village Scene:
Slowly, and in small groups, follow the directions in Bahasa Indonesia.Match the plant name on the brown label with the one given in the directions.Match the real plant with the one in your village scene page.Write the Bahasa Indonesia name in the appropriate blank space on the village scene page.

Tanaman Naiklah ke atas jembatan. Jalanlah delapanpuluh tiga langkah. Di sebelah kiri adalah pohonyang tinggi sekali.Namanya Terminalia catappa.....Ketapang.Lihat ke atas. Indah ya! Hijau sekali.
Tanaman Di sebelah kiri, kira-kira tujuh langkah dari ketapang, di belakang tanaman-tanaman lain adabeberapa Musa banksii....Pohon pisang.Daunnya panjang sekali. Kadang-kadang ada buah pisang atau bunga.
Tanaman Di sebelah kanan, dua puluh empat langkah lagi adalah pohon. Lihat ke atas, ituCaryota rumphiana....Genduru

1. Cycas circinalis.....Pakis Aji
After pounding, soaking and rinsing in fresh waterthe raw, poisonous seeds of pakis aji can be madeinto edible flour. Even after this treatment somepoisons may remain and if eaten too often theseeds cause stomach pains. Sago starch can beobtained by cutting and splitting the stem open.The very tender, uncurled, youngleaves can be eaten as a vegetable.

2. Etlingera elatior......Jahe
This plant is related to the commonly usedginger plant Zingiber officinale or jahe.Ginger is used throughout Asia and featuresin many Indonesian dishes. Used as amedicine jahe soothes stomach ache andwhen rubbed into the skin relievesitchiness. Next to the Etlingera isanother type of jahe plant calledZingiber zerumbet. Note its thick,swollen roots. Jahe comes froma similar type of root on the closelyrelated cultivated ginger plant.

3. Cocos nucifera....Kelapa
Kelapa, or coconut, is said to have hundreds ofdifferent uses and, like bamboo, is one of themost commonly used plants in Indonesia.Uses of kelapa include: Dried flesh (copra)- cooking, oil used in soaps, cosmetics and cooking. Burnt shell - medicinal charcoal. Husk fibre (coir)- mats. Trunk and leaves - housing. Milk - a refreshing drink.Grown in plantations and gardens, kelapa is oneof the most valuable crops after palm oil and rubber.Kelapa plantations may also have crops likeginger, coffee, cloves, pineapples andBananas growing underneath thekelapa palms.

4. Calamus......Rotan
Rotan is a rainforest climber usedto make rattan cane products for use in
Indonesia and all aroundthe world. After thethorny sheath is removed, the stems are dried
over a fire before a final slower drying in thesun. Split cane is used for baskets, fish traps,snares and bridge cables. Large amounts are
exportedfor the cane furniture industry.

5. Pandanus lauterbachii .........Pohon Pandan
The strong, long leaves of pandan are often woven into mats, sugar bags, hatsand even canoe sails. Each leaf is dried over a fire then split into strips before
being used for weaving. Fresh, male pandan flowers are worn in the hair for theirscent. The leaves are added to food as a flavouring and colouring. Pandan fruit
resemble pineapples and taste similar to the flavour of a sweet apple.

6. Acalypha hispida........Ekor Kucing
Grown for the constant flush of attractive flowers,ekor kucing is a popular shrub in gardens.
Drinks made from the roots were onceused to treat lung diseases.

7. Terminalia catappa........Ketapang
This tall tree grows near beaches and is often found in coastalvillages. The timber can be used for troughs,carts and planks for building. The edibleseed has a subtle flavour but is very hardto extract from the husk. The bark has beenused as a medicine to treat diarrhoea.Planted in rows, ketapangmakes an attractive street tree.

8. Musa banksii......Pohon Pisang
Daun pisang banana leaves, make usefultemporary thatching, platters or wrappers
for cooking food. By selecting fromwild pisang, tasty farm grown pisang
have been developed into amajor tropical food crop.
Daun pisang are often folded into squares and soldin village markets as a cooking wrapper and
used in the same way we mightcook food in a glad bag or
aluminium foil.

9. Caryota rumphiana....Genduru
If this palm is cut just before flowering, the starch-rich pith in the trunk can beharvested for sago. If left to form a flower-stalk, a sweet juice (or toddy) can betapped by repeatedly slicing off the end of the stalk. The juice is fermented to
produce palm wine. In Kalimantan, fishing line was made from the plant's string-like fibre. When packed into wads it was used to propel darts from blowpipes.
The fibre also makes good material for starting fires. Smouldering pieces of thetwisted fibre could be kept handy near homes for use as an instant fire starter.

10. Colocasia gigantea.....Keladi
The swollen root of keladi contains starch and can be eaten as a vegetable. Thevery large leaves make useful temporary umbrellas during tropical downpours aswell as useful all purpose wrappers. Fruit from this wild keladi help enhance the
flavour of cooked food.

Find a comfortable spot in the conservatory or garden to complete the following farewellthoughts on your Indonesian visit to the conservatory.
Send a postcard to your family or friends in Australia. Tell them what the climate waslike and how the plants of the Indonesian rainforest were different to what you are used to
where you live. You might like to comment on the different smells, shapes and colours of therainforest plants or describe what some of the plants were used for in Kehidupan Sehari-hari.

Museum of Economic Botany
This fruits and seeds museum is located in the central part of the garden. It contains manydried specimens of tropical fruits and seeds mentioned in this book. Opening times are 11a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 12 noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Back at school
Collect leaves of plants that you think might grow in Indonesia. Bring them to schooland discuss them with your class.
Turn your village scene into a wall poster by adding some colours, traditional patternsand other things you know or can find out about daily village life. Do the same with yourplant cards and surround the village scene with them. Use string or cotton to join the plantcard to where the plant is found in the village scene.
Invite parents and friends or different classes to visit your classroom. Use your wallposters to share with them some of the things you learnt on your 'Visit to Indonesia'.
Find things at home made from plants that might grow in Indonesia. Bring them toschool and discuss them with your class.
Use the drawing in the teacher section of this booklet to find out about some of thecommon foods and spices used in Indonesia. Label the drawing in Bahasa Indonesia.Research some traditional recipes and prepare a meal.
Start a pot plant garden in your classroom with rainforest plants and spices that growin Indonesia.
Using plant and recycled material, construct a model of an Indonesian village fordisplay in your school.
Invite a plant weaver in to show you how to make baskets, mats, hats etc. using onlymaterial from plants.
