Synopsis

The narrator an incident which he has experienced while on holiday in Italy. He meets

an interesting person called Thomas Wilson, an Englishman, who has settled down in

Italy.

Sixteen years ago, Wilson left his banking job in London and decided to move to Capri

because he fell in love with the beautiful island while on a holiday there. Wilson tells the

narrator that he has enough money to live on for twenty-five years exactly, that is until

the age of sixty, and then he will kill himself. The narrator then leaves Italy and is only

able to return thirteen years later. He is curious to know what happened to Wilson. He

learns that when the money ran out, Wilson borrowed money from here and there and

managed to live for a year. But the owner of the cottage wanted to evict him because he

had not paid his rent for one year. That night, Wilson tried to commit suicide but he did

not die. He spent the rest of his life is a woodshed, looking after chickens and goats. He

became a recluse and ran away from everyone.

Finally, he died on the hillsides, overlooking the scenery he loved so much.

1. Plot

Plot is the sequence of events in the story. Plot is seen as the structure of the actions or

events which are ordered to give meanings to the story. The events or incidents that

take place in a story are developed based on a particular structure. The structure of the

plot entails the five stage development in the short story ³The Lotus Eater´. The five

stage developments are:



1.2 The Rising Action Stage

Wilson has worked for a year to collect money and has bought an annuity which would

provide a yearly income to him on a regular basis. He plans to only live until his money

finishes, when he reaches the age of sixty. However, When Wilson money finishes

when he reaches the age of sixty, he continues to live. He borrows some money to

continue living by telling landlord that his money would come soon. Wilson manages to

live under such pretext for over a year. But he¶s luck runs out, and his landlord tells him

to leave if he does not pay his rent. Wilson is faced with a dilemma.

1.3 Climax¶

Wilson attempts suicide by starting a fire using charcoal in his bedroom while the

windows are all shut. He is unsuccessful because he is not determined to take his own

life. He has not made any major decisions for a long time so when it is time for him to

make the most important decision; to take his own life. He is unable to do so `.

1.4 The Falling Action Stage

He is alive but becomes ill. Both Assunta and her husband, take him to the hospital

where his condition gets better. But, he is no more the same Wilson; he has changed.

Assunta and her husband allow Wilson to live in a woodshed and they give him food. In

return, he takes care of their goats and chicken. The woodshed is very uncomfortable to



live in. It is extremely hot during summer, and on the other hand, freezing cold during

winter. Wilson becomes a loner; he does not like to meet people. Wilson lives a

miserable life. But, it is Wilson, who has chosen the manner to live. It is his choice of

life.

1.5 The Closure or Ending

Wilson died at the age of sixty-seven. His body was found on the hillside overlooking

the Bay of Naples in the moonlight.

My opinion about the plot

Plot of The Lotus Eater is very interesting to know because the plot had up and down of

the character. Ending of The Lotus Eater story was very tragic because the main

character was die. I don¶t like the end of the story. In my opinion I think it¶s better if the

main character stays alive so that the plot will be grow and happy ending can be told in

the story.

I suggest that character Thomas Wilson should not die but he should be more wiser.

Thomas Wilson has to be a hardworking person and live in happy with a lot of money.

I think with the money Wilson can do anything and what pleasure he can get. Similarly

by Wilson, he can choose a suitable woman to be his wife. So Wilson will not feel lonely

and share joy and sorrow with his wife.



I also hope that Wilson does not thinking like that. I think Wilson¶s actions as evil

madman without a thought and good will do after that, so also consider his life will end

at the age of sixty. Every human must belief of their religion, and every religion its

followers do not want to make a stupid like Wilson.

Finally, with the money Wilson also can buy a house in the Bay of Naples because he

likes the beauty and love environment on the beach. I think Wilson should not quit his

day job as a bank manager in London. Wilson can spend every holiday at home

purchased in addition to providing peace of mind to him.
