    Long time ago there was a kingdom in West Java. The kingdom was ruled by a king

    called Prabu. He was a kind and wise king. Under Prabu’s leadership the kingdom

    grew into a prosperous kingdom. There’s no hunger in the kingdom. !verybody in

    the kingdom loved their king. "ut there’s one problem. The king and his #ueenhadn’t got any children. $t made the couple very sad. That was why Prabu decided

    to go to the %ungle. There he meditated and prayed to &od. !veryday he begged 'or

    a child. His dream (nally came true. ) 'ew months later the #ueen got pregnant. )ll

    people in the kingdom 'elt very happy. They sent many presents to the palace to

    e*press their happiness. +ine months later a baby girl was born. The baby grew as a

    beauti'ul teenager then.

    Prabu and his #ueen loved their daughter so much. They gave what ever she

    wanted. $t made the princess grew into a spoiled girl. When her wish couldn’t be

    'ul(lled she would be very angry. ,he even said bad things o'ten. !ven though the

    princess behaved badly her parents still loved her and so did the people in thekingdom.

     Time passed and the princess grew more beauti'ul. $n a 'ew days the princess

    would be seventeen years old. That’s why people o' that kingdom brought many

    presents 'or her. They bring gold and beauti'ul %ewelries. Prabu collected the

    presents. Then Prabu stored them in a special room. ,ome times he would take

    them to give to his people who needed it. Prabu only took a 'ew gold and %ewels.

     Then he brought them to a goldsmith. -Please make a necklace 'or my daughter

    said Prabu. -/y pleasure 0our /a%esty the goldsmith replied. The goldsmith

    worked with all his heart and his ability. He wanted to create the most beauti'ul

    necklace 'or the princess.

     The birthday came. People gathered in the palace (eld. Then Prabu and the #ueen

    appeared. They waved to their beloved people. 1heers were loud and louder when

    the princess appeared. !verybody admired her beauty. Prabu got up 'rom his chair

    and took a small pillow. ) beauti'ul necklace was on the pillow. Prabu took that

    necklace. -/y beloved daughter today $ give this necklace to you. This necklace is

    a gi't 'rom people in this country. They love you so much. They presented it 'or you

    to e*press their happiness because you have growing to a woman said Prabu. The

    princess accepted the necklace. ,he looked at the necklace in a glance. -$ don’t

     The necklace hit the 3oor and was broken. The gold and %ewels were spread out on

    3ooded. ,oon the place became a big lake.

    +owadays the water on that lake is not as 'ull as be'ore. There is only a small lake

    now. People called the lake Telaga Warna 4it means lake o' colour5. 6n a bright day

    the lake is 'ull o' colour. These colors come 'rom the re3ections o' 'orest plants3owers and sky around the lake. "ut some people said that the colours are 'rom the

    princess’ necklace which spreads at the bottom o' the lake.777

    Sangkuriang

    Long time ago in West Java lived a beauti'ul girl named 8ayang ,umbi. ,he was

    also smart and clever. Her beauty and intelligence made a prince 'rom the heavenly

    kingdom o' 9ahyangan desire her as his wi'e. The prince asked permission 'rom his

    'ather to marry 8ayang ,umbi. People 'rom 9ahyangan could never live side by side

    with humans but his 'ather approved on one condition when they had a child the

    prince would trans'orm into a dog. The prince accepted the condition.

     They get married and lived happily in the woods until 8ayang ,umbi gave birth to a

    baby boy. The prince then changed into a dog named Tumang. Their son is named

    ,angkuriang. He was very smart and handsome like his 'ather. !veryday he hunted

    animals and looked 'or 'ruits to eat. 6ne day when he was hunting ,angkuriang

    accidentally killed Tumang. His arrow missed the deer he was targeting and hit

     Tumang instead. He went home and tells her mother about the dog. -What:

    8ayang ,umbi was appalled. 8riven by sadness and anger she grabbed a weaving

    tool and hit ,angkuriang’s head with it. 8ayang ,umbi was so sad; she didn’t pay

    any attention to ,angkuriang and started to cry.

    ,angkuriang 'eel sad and also con'used. How can his mother love a dog more than

    him: ,angkuriang then decided to go away 'rom their home and went on a %ourney.

    $n the morning 8ayang ,umbi (nally stopped crying. ,he started to 'eel better so

    she went to (nd ,angkuriang. "ut her son was no where to be 'ound. ,he looked

    everywhere but still couldn’t (nd him.

    )'ter the young man le't 8ayang ,umbi prayed 'or guidance. )'ter praying she

    became convinced that the young man was indeed her missing son. ,he reali>ed

    that she had to do something to prevent ,angkuriang 'rom marrying her. "ut she

    did not wish to disappoint him by cancelling the wedding. ,o although she agreed

    to marry ,angkuriang she would do so only on the condition that he provides her

    with a lake and built a beauti'ul boat all in one night.

    ,angkuriang accepted this condition without a doubt. He had spent his youth

    studying magical arts. )'ter the sun went down ,angkuriang went to the hill. Then

    he called a group o' genie to build a dam around 1itarum ?iver. Then he commands

    the genies to cut down trees and build a boat. ) 'ew moments be'ore dawn

    ,angkuriang and his genie servants almost (nished the boat.

    8ayang ,umbi who had been spying on him realised that ,angkuriang would 'ul(ll

    the condition she had set. 8ayang ,umbi immediately woke all the women in the

    village and asked them to wave a long red scar'. )ll the women in the village were

    waving red scar' making it look as i' dawn was breaking. 8eceived by 'alse dawnthe cock crowed and 'armers rose 'or the new day.

    ,angkuriang’s genie servants immediately dropped their work and ran 'or cover

    'rom the sun which they 'eared. ,angkuriang grew 'urious. With all his anger he

    kicked the un(nished boat. The boat 3ew and landed on a valley. The boat then

    became a mountain called /ount Tangkuban Perahu 4Tangkuban means upturned

    or upside down and Perahu means boat5. With his power he destroyed the dam.

     The water drained 'rom the lake becoming a wide plain and nowadays became a

    city called "andung 4'rom the word "endung which means 8am5.777

     Aji Saka

    ) long time ago there was a kingdom called /edang 9amulan. The kingdom o'/edang 9amulan was ruled by Prabu 8ewata 1engkar. The people in the kingdom

    were very scared by the king. $t was because the king liked to eat human 3esh.

    6nce a week he commanded his messenger Patih Jugul /uda to (nd him a human

    to eat.

    eyes suddenly widened upon seeing )%i ,aka. He could already imagine how

    delicious his meat would taste. -Who are you: asked Prabu 8ewata 1engkar. -$ am

    )%i ,aka 'rom the village o' /edang 9awit )%i ,aka answered. -Ha...ha...ha.... $’m

    glad you came here. 0ou would be my meal. $=m starving said the king.

    covered the whole kingdom. Prabu 8ewata 1engkar was angry. He then attacked )%i

    ,aka. "ut then the turban wrapped itsel' around him and began to strangle him.

     The turban then threw the king’s body to the ,outh ,ea. The waves carried Prabu

    dewata 1engkar away until he (nally drowned and died.

    )%i ,aka then asked the people o' /edang 9amulan to come back to the kingdom. They all thanked the brave )%i ,aka. They also agreed to make )%i ,aka to be their

    king. )%i ,aka then ruled the kingdom wisely. Under the leadership o' )%i ,aka

    /edang 9amulan become a peace'ul and prosperous kingdom.777

     Mouse Deer and Tiger

    6ne upon a time there was a mouse deer living in a 'orest. )lthough he was small

    he wasn’t a'raid o' the other bigger animals who wanted to eat him. He was so

    smart; he always managed to ditch them. 6ne day a tiger was wandering around

    'or 'ood. He hadn=t been eating 'or days. He was really hungry. While he was

    walking in the 'orest he saw /ouse 8eer. The tiger wanted to eat him.

     Tiger slowly ducked crawled approaching /ouse 8eer then...B&otcha2B said Tiger.

    He caught /ouse 8eer. -Hello /ouse 8eer2 $’m really hungry right now. 0ou’ll be my

    lunch2 said Tiger. /ouse 8eer didn’t want to be his lunch. He tried to be calm. He

    looked around and saw some buAalo’s dung. He had an idea. -$’m sorry Tiger. $

    can’t be your lunch now. The 9ing has ordered me to guard his cake said /ouse

    tricked me again. "ut now you will be my lunch. /ouse 8eer looked around and

    saw a cobra. The snake was coiled asleep on the ground. -$’m sorry Tiger. $ can’t be

    your lunch now. The 9ing has ordered me to guard his belt said /ouse 8eer

    Long time ago lived a 'armer and his wi'e in a village by the side o' a 'orest. They

    lived simply and they like to help other people especially one who in aDictions. 6ne

    night the 'armer and his wi'e were resting in their house. The 'armer was sitting

    beside his sleeping wi'e. ,uddenly a white centipede came out 'rom the wi'e’s

    head. The 'armer was ama>ed. He then 'ollowed the centipede until they reach a

    small pond not 'ar 'rom their house. Then the centipede suddenly disappeared. The

    'armer went home and 'ound his wi'e still soundly asleep.

    $n the morning the wi'e told his husband about the dream she had last night. -$ was

    walking through a vast (eld and $ came to a lake. $ saw a giant hedgehog in the

    lake. $t was glaring at me so $ ran away. )'ter he heard his wi'e’s dream the

    'armer went back to the small pond. $n the pond he saw something very shiny. Hecame to the shiny ob%ect and took it. $t was a golden hedgehog statue. $t was very

    beauti'ul. $ts eyes were made o' diamond. The 'armer then brought the statue

    home.

    $n the ne*t day the 'armer told his wi'e about his dream. They really wanted to

    prove it. The 'armer slowly caressed the statue=s head. He said the prayer and

    asked 'or rice. ,uddenly rice came out o' the mouth o' the statue. The rice kept oncoming out 'rom the statue=s mouth. The 'armer immediately said the prayer to

    stop it. The rice then stopped coming out 'rom the statue.

     The 'armer and his wi'e then asked 'or other things %ewelry and other stuA they

    needed. They became very rich. "ut they still like to help other people. ) lot o' poor

    came to them 'or help. Un'ortunately a thie' 'ound out about the secret o' the

    golden hedgehog statue. Pretending to be a poor asking 'or help he stole the statue

    'rom the 'armer’s house.

     The thie' blurred to the district area o' +gabang. There was a drought in the area.

     The thie' wanted sympathy 'rom the people so he said to them that he would

    provide them with water. The thie' then caressed the hedgehog statue and said the

    prayer. Water came out o' the statue’s mouth. )ll the people were so happy. "ut the

    water kept on coming out. The thie' didn’t know the prayer to stop the wish. People

    who saw the incident were really scared. They ran away to avoid the water as it was

    started to 3ood the area. The thie' also wanted to run away but he cannot move his

    legs. $n his vision there was a giant hedgehog holding both his legs. Water kept

    coming 'rom the statue and slowly it became a river. The thie' was drowned in the

    river. People then named the river as Hedgehog ?iver or ,ungai Landak.777

    /any years ago in Loksado lived a young man with his mother. He was called

    )ndung 9uswara. He was a smart young man. He had medical skill that he learned

    'rom his late 'ather. )ndung 9uswara worked hard everyday to 'ul(ll their daily

    needs. 6ne day )ndung 9uswara went to the 'orest alone searching 'or 'ruits and

    vegetables. 6n his way home he 'ound an old man s#uee>ed badly between two

    big trees. )ndung 9uswara immediately helped him. He then healed his woundper'ectly. -8ear young man $ thank you 'or your help the old man said and took

    something hanging on his neck. -)s my gratitude $ give you this necklace. Hope'ully

    it would bring good 'ortune 'or you said the old man. )ndung 9uswara took the gi't

    and went home.

    princess who was also been sick. -/y daughter has been on her bed 'or two weeks.

    princess was happy to welcome )ndung as her husband. The same was 'elt by

    which according to local people was bearing 'ruit. )ndung 9uswara stood

    surprisingly a'ter knowing that the tree grew e*actly in 'ront o' his motherCs small

    hut. )ndung 9uswara immediately commanded the troops to return to the kingdom

    without taking the 'ruit to avoid meeting his own mother.

    "ut suddenly )ndung 9uswara’s mother went out 'rom the hut. ,he saw her son

    among the troops in 'ront o' her home. -)ndung@)ndung@my son she tried to

    call her son. )ndung 9uswara and the troops continuously walked to keep away

    'rom the old woman. However she ran a'ter them and kept calling 'or his son.

    grows bigger bigger than any watermelon 8ermawan ever see. Harvesting time

    (nally came and he decided to take the watermelon. -6h my &od it is so heavy

    he uttered while trying hardly to carry it into the house to put on the table. He took

    a kni'e and started to cut the watermelon. 8ermawan was shocked. $nside the

    watermelon is some kind o' yellow sand. -What could this be: 8ermawanwondered. Then he reali>ed that the strange yellow sand was actually a pile o' pure

    golden sand. -Holy &od it’s gold. $’m rich he danced happily. He heard bird

    twittered and he looked outside. He saw the sparrow on a tree. -Thank you he

    shouted. -Thank you he shouted again and then the sparrow 3ew away.

    8ermawan then bought a big house with a very big garden the ne*t day. )ll o' the

    poor came to his house and were welcomed 'or meals. This time 8ermawan would

    not run out o' money. He had so much money and his (elds produced plants with

    good 'ruits as well.

     The news about 8ermawan’s 'ortune was heard by /u>akir and made him envy. Hewent to 8ermawan house and 8ermawan honestly told his brother about the

    sparrow. /u>akir immediately commanded his servants to (nd a bird with broken

    wings as he heard the story 'rom his brother. ) week passed but /u>akir’s servants

    still couldn’t (nd such bird. He was so angry and even couldnCt sleep during the

    nights. The ne*t day he asked one o' his servants to catch a bird using chopsticks.

    6' course the chopsticks hurt the bird and broke its wings. /u>akir then pretended

    to pity the bird and took care o' it. 8ays passed and the bird was completely healed

    and let to 3y. The 'ollowing day the bird came back to /u>akir and brought a seed

    'or him. He was very happy. $ will be very rich soon even richer than 8ermawan

    he said to himsel'.

    /u>akir planted the seed at the back yard o' his house and it grew to a (ne

    watermelon tree a'ter several days. $t also bore only one 'ruit which was much

    bigger than that once owned by 8ermawan. )s the harvesting time approached

    /u>akir asked his servants to take the 'ruit into his house. He couldnCt wait to (nd a

    pile o' golden sand inside. He cut the watermelon himsel' and was very shocked

    when black mud mi*ed with dirt 3ushed out to his 'ace. $t smelled very bad.

    /u>akirCs clothes and also the room were terribly dirty because o' it. He ran to the

    street because he couldnCt stand the rotten smell 'rom the watermelon. )ll the

    people on the street laughed at him 'or what they saw.777

    6nce upon a time in Tapanuli lived a 'amous sculptor named 8atu Panggana. When

    he got an order he went to the 'orest to look 'or the most suitable wood and carved

    it according to the order. 6ne day he got an inspiration to carve a wood he 'ound.

    He worked all day in his workshop to carve the wood into a statue o' a beauti'ul

    woman. Then he put the statue in 'ront o' his house.

    Later a young merchant passed by and saw the statue. His name was "ao

    Partigatiga. He was very impressed by the beauty o' the statue. He then put

    beauti'ul clothes and %ewelries on the statue. -$t’s so beauti'ul he said to himsel'
