The Validity of Rouse Equation for Predicting Suspended SedimentConcentration Profiles in Transversal Direction of

Uniform Open Channel Flow

Abstact

Among several equations to predict suspended sediment concentration profiles found inIiteratures, Rouse equation can be considered as the most popular one. Rouse equation isbased on logarithmic velocity distribution of 2-Dimensional flow, that relatively similar tothe flow characteristics at the center of channel. As reported in literatures, Rouse equationcan predict suspended sediment concentration profiles satisfactorily, based on laboratoriesor fields data, especially those measured at the center of channel. However, in the edgeregion, near the side wall of channel, the validity of Rouse equation to predict suspendedsediment concentration protiles need to be evaluated. In order to evaluate the validity ofRouse Equation, 125 profiles of suspended sediment concentration of laboratory data -measured by using optical silt measuring instruments We (Foslim probe) in flume at 5ditferent positions in transversal direction -, and 50 profiles of suspended sedimentconcentration of lield data - measured in Mataram irrigation channel by using Opconprobe at 5 different positions - were analyed. The results of the analyzed data showed thatthe Rouse equation cin satisfactortly predict the profiles of suspended sedimentconcentration data, especially for the data measured at the center of channel, either forIaboratory or field data. However, away from the center of channel, the equation deuiatesfrom the measured data, and needs to be corrected. By applying a certain correction factorto Rouse Parameter as a function of position in transversal direction, 0' : f (z/B), theRouse equation can be used to predict the profiles for thewhole cross section, from thecenter to the edge of the channel. At the center of the channel, 0' = l, and tend to increase,p' > 1, closer to the edge of channel. The existence of bed load transport and the differenceof channel wall roughness slightly influence the 0'-values, however their influences are notsignificant compared to the scattered data.

Keywords: Rouse equation, suspended sediment concentration, transversal direction, laboratory and field data.

Abstract

Pakistan is the world's 2txth largest population, and has an estimated population of

162.508 millions a: on F9b1uary 2008. This is increasing at a rate of i.obz causingPressure on water denayd. By 2025 it is projected that ovei 50% of the population wiil ieliving i1 urban areas of Pakistan. The cunent urban population of Pa'kistan estimated isabout 34 millions, while current level of urban water sippty coverage is around O0%o. Greywater-has pronisilg potential as a resource that caibe used tisupplenent or repkcepotable water for the purpose of flushing, car washing, irrigation, etc.

11 thil study, a Grow technologr based grey water treatment system was established in theTeacher's Hostel of Mehran univeriity of Engineering and Technologr Jrrriori,Pakistan. This technologlr contains 10 troughs ptaied in fiie rows of 3.66 m each. The tenbaflles were used to maintain both horizontal'and vertical flow through the trought. in,Gravels of 19 mm size were used as filtration medium in the troughs.

v

At the st?rt sSrsten was run in an open atmosphere - yithout air injection and withoutplants. The grey water flow was maintained at'0.75 l/min. for various time intervals. ThepH variation was little and tltis ranged from 7.4 to 7.7.The TSS removal initialty was about38% & TDS 4.2% for two hours of treatment. The BOD removal was 30.3%- while CODremoval was 54.5% in the same period. After four hours of treatment the TSS removal wentup to 81%, BOD to 90.3%, COD to 63.6%o. After six hours, the treatment further improvedTSS removal (over 90%o), TDS (11.26%o) but BOD removal was reduced to fi% and CODt9 54.5%o. Grey water temperature variation during the day was from Zg-Sf C. Furtherinvestigations are underway to optimize the operating conditions of this natural treatment
