SunGold Meatspring and lamb go together like salt and pepper. That’s why we’re featuring lamb in our meat

department this month. And not just any lamb – Western Canadian lamb from SunGold Specialty Meats.

SunGold processes lamb in Innisfail, a town set among farmers’ fields just south of Red Deer, Alberta. In the warm upstairs offices, General Manager Miles Kliner explains that lamb is the only red meat increasing in per capita consumption in Canada. In other words, Canadians are eating more lamb.

“Lamb is no longer a specialty item,” says Miles, his arms waving while he talks. “With beef prices being what they are, lamb is not out of reach, cost-wise.”

And SunGold lamb has a lot more than just that going for it. All the lamb processed at SunGold is raised domestically, with the majority raised in Alberta. About half of the approximate 100,000 lambs that SunGold will process this year will come from their new state-of-the-art feedlot near the hamlet of Iron Springs, Alberta. The rest come from a variety of quality suppliers from British Columbia to Manitoba.

If you’re thinking that’s a lot of lamb, you’re right. In 2014, SunGold processed over 70 per cent of all the lamb raised in Alberta, says Miles. The plant is federally inspected, so SunGold sells its coveted meat across Canada and to the USA, Mexico and the UAE, where it is served in high end hotels in Dubai.

Part of its popularity is because SunGold lamb is certified halal. It is also processed in a modern facility

with advanced equipment, refrigeration, packaging and processes. But mostly, it’s the flavour. Since Canadian grown lamb can’t be grass fed throughout the year like it is in Australia or New Zealand, SunGold lamb is grain finished for a minimum of 45 days, resulting in tender, juicy marbled meat that has a milder taste than imported lamb, says Miles.

“We know it’s the best,” says Miles. “You’ve got to give it a try.”

If you want to try lamb but are unfamiliar with it, Miles recommends cooking it to no more than medium, about 150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The meat should be pink throughout with a nice crust on it. From legs, racks and loin chops to burgers and kebabs, Miles says his favourite way to cook lamb is to barbeque it. He grills year-round, as long as it’s not cold enough to freeze his beer. If you prefer something a little more indoors, you can also roast, braise, broil or pan fry. Visit sungoldmeats.com/recipes for more details.

Rosemary marinated lamb short loin chops are on March Stockboy Special in our meat department for $32.59/kg and cooked in our kitchen delis for $3.59/100g.

lorence Eileen Price passed away peacefully in the Dulcina Hospice Saturday morning January

30, 2016 after a recent challenge with cancer. Born July 23, 1928 at Crossfield on her parents’ homestead, she grew up during some very hard years. She learned from her father the love of animals, especially horses and from her mother, the love of learning and teaching.

She went by horseback to the local country school and then high school in Crossfield where she graduated at age 16 while earning the Governor General’s award for her marks. She later became a teacher in a one room school near Nier, Alberta. There she cared for students’ horses and split wood to heat the school in winter in time to thaw the ink wells so the students could do their work.

Flo was courted by and married Stanley Price and quickly helped with the purebred Hereford operation his father and family had west of Crossfield. In 1950, Stan and Flo purchased some land of their own northwest of Acme and eventually began their own cattle and grain operation. Over time this would become Sunterra Farms.

She was actively involved in operations, in the yard with her own vegetable garden and keeping the books. She was also kept busy raising a growing family. Years passed before there was running water in the house and much longer before the central coal furnace and wood stove were replaced.

The family business was quickly growing to reach beyond the local community to international business connections. Flo was involved in recording,

accounting and utilizing her creative ability to generate brochures on her trusty Mac computers. Beyond this though she made a tremendous contribution to the character of the organization at all levels with her caring, supportive approach with people and keen interest in everyone. This legacy certainly lives on with everyone she touched.

In addition to being a major part of family and business awards, Flo was recognized individually as

the Acme Volunteer of the Year, by Global Television as a Woman of Vision and

one of Country Guide’s 12 Most Influential Farmers In Canada.

Flo was also passionate about supporting people and families in the community. She was active through the church teaching Sunday school, part of the United Church Women, leading youth groups and

starting community events to help get people to know each other

better. She often sought out those who needed a little help.

She always was a champion of education, both at school and with individuals. Flo was a founding member of ACES (Acme Cultural Education Society), a small group dedicated to supporting the school. She enjoyed sketching and painting as well as writing history, short stories and poems. Her love of learning and helping people enjoy art and music lives on with all who benefited.

She was a loving and supportive daughter, sister, wife and partner, and an encouraging and loving mother to seven children, grandmother to 29, great grandmother to 19, and a friend and mentor to all who needed or wanted this.
